Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
At least Waterpon doesn't take x4 damage from Freeze-Dry when it teralizes, it simply gets 2HKOd (Useless it crits). Light Screen support allows waterpon to live longer against Kyurem. Other fun fact, Freeze-Dry activates Yache Berry for water type pokemon.
I prefer running scarf on kyurem more then specs, 95 speed is below average and it’s typing defensively isn’t good making it easy to revenge kill
I have swept many teams with the surprise factor of scarf alone

my personal input, get creative with that last slot! find something that synergizes well with the rest of your team that people aren't using or expecting. as long as you're experimenting, feel free to get real stupid with it. breaking swipe, dragon tail, body slam, imprison, some bullshit like that. worst case, you find out your tech doesn't work and just slap on a more common filler move instead
(note: this only applies if you're good. if you're not, just load sub or scale shot)

Yeah that last slot is really terrifying to try and guess for sure, definitely part of what makes Kyurem terrifying in team preview other than the fact it can hax through teams or rip through fatter teams and sweep itself in many different ways.
Suspect Kyurem its been fucking broken ever since it was first suspected. Second suspect would still be Waterpon. I dont think Gouging Fire is broken at all, although dtail sets are cool, Zamazenta is a hard dnb, and Darkrai is kinda annoying sometimes but i wouldnt suspect it, certainly not right now.
Literally my exact thoughts too, its time for Kyurem to go and if waterpon becomes a massive issue because of it going we get that out too. Neither are healthy anyway and if they both go down the line I think we get to a good spot with the metagame.

This summer has been proving to us that Iron Moth is a dangerous mfer. Moth provides needed role compression for teams as a Fairy resist, Tspike absorber, and speed control. Its been popping up on many offenses used in OLT such as this one with Tera Dragon G-Fire by oldspicemike
Unless you have a specific check, players must be wary of Iron Moth because it will snowball out of control. With Tran usage being low, Iron Moth has been running non-Tera Blast options more frequently, opening the door for Gleam to hit Dragons, Psychic to smack Glimm and opposing Poison types, or E-Ball to snipe Garg/Ting team comps. A particular favorite set of mine is AoA Moth due to how expected Substitute is. You could get surprise kills or even sweep the entire team like in this replay.
I’ve spectated a bunch of OLT games where Moth cheats through half the team or wins off the spot. I expect a high rate of Moth checks like Ting-Lu or AV King to rise in usage. We may even see niche checks like Ceruledge.

Lokix has only been trending upwards in Cycle 2. CB Tinted Lens First Impression is one of the best tools for rkilling the numerous offensive juggernauts like Roaring Moon, Darkrai, Raging Bolt, Gouging Fire, Deo-S, and more. You might’ve seen Lokix on a core of Mola/Crown/Tusk, which was spammed by OLT and non-OLT players alike. Besides Lokix’s valuable priority, its typing is also surprisingly decent, letting it come in on Darkrai, Ting-Lu, Shadow Balls, and Deoxys-Speed. The spread above gives it a bit of bulk while outpacing standard Gliscors. Tera Bug Leech Life is surprisingly strong, doing big chunks to even the physically bulky threats in Gliscor, Mola, and Zama. Lokix still has issues like fraility and a SR weakness, but it is doing better than it was initially the last few months.
Next in line of Dark types spammed this OLT is Samurott-Hisui. Samu has become the go-to Spiker on teams as it can force progress without sacrificing offensive pressure. Outside of that, its access to Encore has only gotten better in the following months as stuff gets optimized and is bolstered by Samu’s Gambit defying Water/Dark typing. Samu boasts multiple sets, the most common being the standard Boots variant and the Sash lead. Spike Stacking HOs have resurfaced and Samu is the MVP of these builds. The only thing stopping Samu from getting up a spike or two a game is the 90% accuracy of Ceaseless. Assault Vest reworks Samu’s role into a bulky offensive spiker. Scarf provides a bit of speed control, and this set alone makes mons like Pult and Cinder hesitant to stay in to click U-Turn because of that being a possibility, letting you get up spikes anyways, but the scariest set imo is SD. After a single boost, it suddenly 2-shots targets like Corv, Skarm, Mola, and can OHKO Zapdos with Tera Dark/Water Ceaseless or Razor Shell. All this while remaining dangerous to faster pokes thanks to priority in the form of Sucker or Aqua Jet. One set I’m interested in trying is this.
Surf with Mystic Water lets you 2HKO Skarm and with Tera, 2HKO physdef Corv after rocks. It also cleanly OHKOs Tusk. You could also drop Encore for Knot to be an immediate asshole to Dozo.
Overall Samu has been consistent even in the face of its competition in Wogre.

Cycle 2 has been an experimental period for Roaring Moon, and it might be time to stop calling it Roaring Mid. The most notable innovation being Tera Ground. Ground has the benefit of boosting Earthquake to obscene levels, bypassing checks like Fairy Bolt, Barb Clef, T-Wave Zapdos, and Garg. Other options such a different Tera types or Roost and Sub have been utilized in OLT. bbeeaa made top cut last cycle with Choice Scarf Roaring Moon on this sick team https://pokepast.es/f7d0a349ddc3ee43.
Scarf Moon a cool speed control option that can clean with strong Outrages and spam Knock/U-Turn. Might be weak to Balance, but it can surprise some people, not on this team cause it’s very much public but maybe we’ll see more of it on other builds. Moon’s meta developments have been positive, making it more conspicuous and therefore, avoiding being one-dimensional.

This core right here has become the posterchild of slow bootless Balance teams during OLT. Often times it’s these four + a breaker + another wall. The idea is straight forward. Cover as many matchups as possible while having a response to everything and pivoting into the breaker of choice. Here’s a rundown.
Ace is the offensive pivot and hazard control option. Its often seen with Wisp, Sucker, or coverage.
Instead of the typical hazard stacking sets, Ting-Lu on this core runs Resttalk with Payback + EQ, acting as a Dondozo for special attackers while maintaining its health. Its synergy with Cinderace works really well because of its ability to Court Change Spikes off.
Slowking-Galar is a secondary special wall on the team, pivot, anti-weather control, and a progress maker with Future Sight. Due to the hazard removal from Cinder and Corv, Glowking can sometimes run other items like Black Sludge, Lagging Tail, or the OLT favorite, Assault Vest.
As a check to Tusk, Rilla, and Gambit, Corviknight is the final glue to this defensive core. Corviknight is also a pivot and Defogger. Despite being blanked by Ghold, Corv’s synergy with Ting-Lu and Cinder is perfect as they both pressure Ghold, plus the latter can force hazards onto the other side. One set I find cool is a mixed def Corv which with 140 spd EVs + SpD nature, 1v1s the infamous Sub-Tect Kyurem.
204 SpA Kyurem Freeze-Dry vs. 248 HP / 140+ SpD Corviknight: 99-117 (24.8 - 29.3%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
As a way to break teams, one of these two are the most common picks. Both of these have the added bonus of punishing the three best Spikers in the tier, Gliscor, Ting-Lu, and Samurott. Hydrapple has become a favorite of mine as a breaker that can switch into Ting-Lu/Garg and non-Play Rough Ogre. Sub-Tect Kyurem is another popular choice on these builds.
Aiding the defensive core is often one of these walls. Garg can set rocks or cheat games with its Curse set, while Dondozo is a mid ass mon, it helps check G-Fire, KG, and Moon. Thanks to Lefties, it doesn’t have to click Rest every second, so it gets to do its job. Mola can pass wishes and check physical threats as well.
While playtesting these teams, I found them to be very consistent with a strong defensive core and good horsepower accompanying them. Is this the new ZapLuKing? No, but OLT showed the new possible routes Balance can go in the future. I’ll be looking forward to Cycle 3.

First of all, great analyses as usual. I greatly enjoy your write ups.
I wanted to highlight a few things here, namely Roaring Moon. I have kept saying that ths mon had far more viable set diversity then just Tera Flying Acrobatics. Now that this is playing out more, I expect people to start to notice just how crazy good this mon is. Problematic even, in my opinion. Between this and the recent surge of Gouging Fire, I am starting to feel slightly validated on my opinions of the two mons. In my experience, RM can be used with non-BE items like Grassy Seed, Lum Berry, or Loaded Dice. But when BE is used, I find that most of the different Tera types are better off with BE attack for the wallbreaking potential. Boosting speed is not really a problem for this mon. And at +1, it tends to outspeed most of the relevant Encore threats, making DD on the predicted switch quite safe compared to many setup sweepers.
Now to highlight a few Tera types I believe are still underutilized. First, there is the frightening potential of Fairy TB. Dark/Fairy is an amazing offensive combo while also being pretty good defensively. I also wanted to point out the potential of Tera Steel Iron head, which allows you to hit Fairy types and Garg while resisting a lot of key RKing priority such as Ice Shard, E-speed, Grassy Glide, and Bullet Punch. Somewhat more defensive sets should be able to utilize Tera Steel very well, especially on Grassy Terrain. If running more than two attacks, Acrobatics or EQ can also be pretty decent at hitting things that otherwise resist Steel/Dark coverage, which is not quite as good as some other sets RM can run. Tera Fire is another great option to avoid Burn and resist Ice Shard, Grassy Glide, and Bullet Punch. All 3 of these Teras resist U-Turn, which is a big plus. However, I believe Tera Fairy is the scariest outside of it being a bit more of a Tera hog.
Aside from RM, there are two others things I want to address. First of all, Hamurott is such an obvious choice as a problematic spiker because it completely bypasses Taunt. I have always said before that if hazards (and really it would be Spikes) are deemed to be too much of an issue, it is Hamurott that should be looked into first. Not anything else. If it weren't for Hamurott, basically every single hazard lead in OU could counter led with fast Taunt or even Magic Bounce. Another issue is the Steel resistance, which makes Iron Crown unable to be as good an anti-lead as it otherwise could have been. Although the dark triad of Rott, Glimm, and Ribombee each have traits that make counter leading all 3 at once problematic, I find that Hamurott seems to have the most of them. And even things that tend to do well into Rott like Bullet Seed, Pop Bomb, or U-turn into helmet don't do well into Glimm or Bee.
This is not a cry to ban Hamurott, by the way. I'm just highlighting how it is probably the single biggest reason why hazards are so much worse this gen. Not some of the other red herrings that have been brought up which may seem worse to some on the surface.
Speaking of hazard removal, I want to highligh the Corv/Ace combo. I'm a big fan of this and have recommended it on here in past comments. So it's good to see people use it and take it in a different teambuilding direction than I have. Where Hatt is generally better with a spinner because you aren't clearing the hazards you bounced back, Ace is a bit better on longer term teams with Defog because you counteract the issue of Court Change only being usable once. If you can get off one Defog and a couple Court Changes, that is usually more than enough. Additionally, Ace allows you to counteract Ghold really well, allowing you make make up for the biggest weakness of Defog Corv in those matchups. I'm so glad people are realizing more and more how good some of the other options for teambuilding are besides boots spam.
This is the only one that I think would be an out and out bad call to test *right now*. Is Zama a great mon? Sure it’s clearly nuts. But the issue Zamazenta is He Who Remains. Without Zamazenta, everything burns. Zama is a great check to a lot of other scary mons, including other mons on this radar or radars in the past. Its presence makes the tier better imo. It’s kinda dumb, but if our goal is the most playable, competitive, and fun meta possible, id keep Zamazenta around for now.
imma be real, Gouging is dumb but I do not think it’s banworthy. It’s fat and strong, but it isn’t too fat or too strong if that makes sense. Its bulky and offensive sets have different checks and play styles they are good into, but that doesn’t mean it’s broken imo. Just a solid mon. I’d give gouging a bit more time to cook. It’s showing good numbers rn but I would say retesting it now would not be the move.
I’ve said my peace on Darkrai in the past, but I think it’s fine for the most part? I like how it gives us more speed control for the tier and it feels healthier in terms of a balance breaker than Kyurem or even Woger tbh. It’s got limited defensive utility and is frailer than either. As scary as Darkrai is, being limited to just Dark Pulse for STAB does hold its ability to rip holes into teams. Sure, flinches are dumb, but I’d rather deal with flinches than Freeze >_>. Its good, but I think it’s healthier than people give credit for.
Kyurem is easily the first target I’d look at for a suspect. Current trends, especially Substitute, make it so hard to deal with right now. Defensive cores struggle to handled Gouging and Kyurem and Darkrai and Woger and what have you, but Kyurem feels the most oppressive to account for.
This is also a bit more cynical, but I doubt any other Mon rn could get 60% in a suspect. Darkrai I don’t think has the public will behind it right now, especially after things have settled. I’d say Woger would be closer, but even that I can see staying. Kyurem imo is not only the biggest problem rn, but it’s the easiest problem to evict from the tier. I think the tier is in a good spot outside of it tbh.
Round 3 of the SV Trio Tour is coming to an end and the last 6 teams are about to be decided. Another awesome set came up when yo cho faced Thiago Nunes. This was Life Orb Dragapult.
Set
Dragapult @ Life Orb
Ability: ?
Tera Type: Dragon
EVs: ?
? Nature
- Dragon Darts
- Fire Blast
- Draco Meteor
- (Probably Shadow Ball)
With its ability mixed attacking ability, Dragapult is able to grab a suprise OHKO against Great Tusk and still manage to dismantle the rest of the team with Dragon Darts. The set managed to KO 5 of the 6 KOs on the team. The presence of Iron Moth forces Iron Valiant’s Tera and from then Dragpult demolishes the team with this mixed set.
Also current SV OU Trio Tour Usage Stats if anyone wanted to see. I think they might mean something since there are a good amount of high caliber players in the tour. Personally I was shocked with the high usage of Iron Moth.
Dragapult can use Tera Fighting to turn the tables against dark type pokémon such as Kingambit, resisting Sucker Punch and OHKOing it back with Tera Fighting Tera Blast.

Mixed attacking EVs with max speed and running infiltrator could look scary. Might I suggest u turn instead of draco?(Or the aforementioned tera blast fighting for stab)

tbh weve been “just ban one more thing and well be in a good spot…” since this gens inception.
Player base continues to talk around some of the actual bottlenecks on the meta (gambit, zama) to lament on whatever fotm offensive mon thats causing teams issues.
Hard disagree. We’ve pretty much constantly been in a position where we knew we would have to do multiple suspects to reach an ideal/healthy meta up until Volc’s ban. Now we’re actually in a genuinely stable period where no Pokémon sticks out like a sore thumb, let alone multiple at the same time. A couple are POTENTIALLY suspect-able, but it’s pretty unclear if anything would even have enough support to reach a 60% ban vote.

I'm not overly fussed about Wellspring tbh; it hits hard with Ivy Cudgel, sure, but it's quite hazard-prone, matches up poorly into a lot of the more offensive end of the meta, getting dunked on by a lot of top threats(Roaring Moon, Zama, Valiant, Darkrai, Raging Bolt, Gambit, Kyurem, etc.) and overall, in a lot of cases, I feel like it's better on paper than in practice during a match.
It's by no means a bad pokemon, as it's still a very potent threat capable of running away with games if it gets a window to set up(or makes its own with Encore), but I don't think it needs suspected, nor is it close to.

True but this is just assuming your offensive team. Ogerpon isn't suspect worthy because of blazing speed but how hard it is to legit have defensive counter play. Think you can switch Rillaboom in? Get U turned on. Sinitscha resist and has strength sap? Plus two knock off goes crazy. Any dragon type? Play rough there ass. Balance teams/ slower pace teams have no legit way to deal with ogerpon if it has the right coverage offensively. Offensive truly doesn't care since they just outspeed ogerpon, meaning ogerpon will never even get a hit in
View attachment 656526
I don’t claim to be the first one to have brought this set up, but I would say I’m one of the first to entertain the idea. Regardless of if you think Kyurem was broken even before this set took off, Sub-Tect did spark this discussion in recent memory. I think its too early to take action on anything rn and if I’m being for real, I think the meta is fine. There’s some meta developments I wanna discuss, but I’ll wait for Cycle 2 to finish beforehand.
To continue the spark of discussion. What are you’re thoughts on these mons in the meta? Should they be suspected or nah?
Im personally just getting real tired of Zama more than anything. Lose if you don’t have a ghost type is a really boring thing to play around and Zama going might finally let us kick out gambit

The only thing I've found that can switch into Ogrepon on slow stuff with any regularity is Dondozo and even then you usually have to Tera to beat it if they carry horn leech.
I don't think any of the offensively over tuned threats are that much better or worse than each other because tera exists and they are all capable of sweeping teams with the right set anyway. The reason I consider Gambit and Zama bottlenecks is because it doesn't really matter if they tera half the time they will beat your team by themselves if you don't prep several answers. And even then you are a flinch or something away from losing to it. I just think its been the unhealthiest aspect of the whole tier for ages. Zama on the other end straight up invalidates whole teams on team preview. Both of these dudes have had the whole meta revolve around them which is construed as healthy for some reason while FOTM offensive threats continue to be banned over and over. Hell Volc was great into both and got banned because tera when it honestly had far more readily available ( as in your team should already have some type of answer just by proxy of good building) counter play than Gambit ever had.

This is gen 9. 110 base speed is not fast, let alone "stupidly fast" or anything approaching that. 110 in gen 9 is basically like the old 100 speed marker where anything below it is kinda slow to outright slow. It's a mid speed level. Fast mons in gen 9 probably don't start until at least like Serperior level speed without a boost or scarf, which Wellspring mostly cannot use aside from a rare Trailblaze. Maybe even more like Valiant. Stupidly fast mons probably don't start until closer to 120-125 speed.
Another reason why I hate this argument is, realistically, other wallbreakers like Kyurem or Gouging Fire are going to be outspeeding most of the slow walls they face anyways even as sub 100 speed in gen 9. That doesn't make them fast. Ogerpon is a wallbreaker. It shouldn't be looked at as anything else. And whenever various people inevitably say it's worse against offense and better against slower teams, well, no duh. That's what it is supposed to do.
For the record, this isn't an anti-ban argument. I'm certainly not against a Wellspring suspect or even a potential ban. It is not a priority for me personally, though. I am not sure Oger even makes my top 5 ban list at the moment. However, I do think there could be several advantages to a Wellspring ban like an opening for more Water moves.
Im personally just getting real tired of Zama more than anything. Lose if you don’t have a ghost type is a really boring thing to play around and Zama going might finally let us kick out gambit
So like, Fighting has 5 types that resist it outside of Ghost. Flying, Bug, Fairy, Poison, and Psychic all resist it. Counting Ghost, that is 6/18 types or literally a third of them. If you can't fit a Ghost type on your team, you can try some of those. And while some mons of this type have a type like Steel that would make them only neutral to Fighting STAB, there are plenty of mons that can resist Fighting moves. There is also Tera, with Tera Fairy being a particularly coveted type.
Examples of these types that are usable in OU include Hatt, Moltres, Zapdos, Lando-T, Gliscor, Latias, Geezing, Fezandipiti, Comfey, and Toxapex. Ribombee, Iron Moth, Enamorus, and Glowking can also resist a hit in circumstances, though Glowking tends to need far more Sp. Def. investment. Ribombee and Enamorus are frail, but they double resist Fighting STAB. Anyways, you can find pokemon that aren't Ghosts and be just fine against Zama.

Lets quickly go over the moves on the most Common Zamazenta Set
Zamazenta @ Leftovers
Ability: Dauntless Shield
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 Spe
Tera Type: Steel
Jolly Nature
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Flex Slot
- Flex Slot
The most common moves run in the flex slotsare: Sub, Stone Edge, Crunch, Heavy Slam, Roar, Ice Fang
Tera can also be extremely flexible, with options like Tera Steel, Poison, Ghost, Fairy, Fire and more (For reference im not making this a ban/dnb zama argument, i just think this is an extremely dumb point to make)
Many, and i mean many, of these supposed counters you just listed are extremely weak to many of the common coverage moves that people run. Running Moltres to counter by burning it? Oops, it just got dropped to Stone Edge. Running Hatterene or Scarf Enam? Raw Heavy Slam for Hat and Tera + Slam for enam drops both. This is the point of coverage moves.
Some of the more popular mons, like toxic gliscor, also can just get beaten by zama since with tera it can become immune to toxic and set up in its face, and just beat it down 1v1 since gliscor lost roost, and things like gking can be crunched down (although it doesnt particularly like being twaved, if it has twave)
Also not to mention, some of these mons you listed are extremely niche. Fezandipiti is non-existant, Comfey is a niche HO mon at best, Ribombee is a webs exclusive mon, and often has to die/brought down to sash to get webs up, Pex is not really used outside of stall, geezing usage is extremely low.
While zama cant beat every single pokemon that resists, you cannot just go around spouting "But Type Chart!!!!" as if that dispels the fact it can still beat most of its checks depending on how the zama player tinkered with it
