Serious The Politics Thread

Regarding the current discussion about news sources, I understand the instinct to be wary of reporting from sources that clearly take a side in a given conflict, but having an argument doesn't inherently make a source invalid. If issues of this nature could only be articulated by those who don't stand to benefit from change in any way, nothing would ever change. If you're really wary, you can always crosscheck it with reporting from other outlets.

The Latinos in Florida, many of which came from Cuba and the DR, will never vote Blue, nor will those from Haiti.

The number of woke college students fails in comparison. Many of which are not changing their citizenship to be able to vote in Florida.

Florida is not Alabama, but it is far from a swing state. Rick Scott is also probably the worst senate member currently sitting and still won… just look at what DeSantis did in the governor election.
Amazing how everything said in one post can be completely wrong. It’s going to be funny come November.

Which is absolutely the right thing to do.

Im gotta be a bit rude here, not everyone here wants do to discuss every minute detail here of the US election especially if the <Taylor Swift vs Donald Trump> conflict is apparetly on of the most pressing issues at this time (Please dont let this be bait for me). This was already the a long time ago and the thread still grows at breakneck speed. I shrae with Eves sentiment, the main topics in this thread are circular and mostly do not provide new information/value. And while this time the atmosphere is not nearly as toxic as in the last U.S election threads 4 years or 8 years ago its still tedious for some users i imagine. Or maybe thats just me, whatever.

Honestly the amout of academic rigour here is nonexisting(exept for the very rare effortpost for which i am grateful for). Very few bother with linking their quotes/sources and half the time its from some completly unserious website/blog(Special mentions here for the sources decolonizepalestine.com and electronicintifada.net) Or in the case someone makes a well sourced post they get flooded with reponses that dont adress their point at all.

The forums that do this serious dicussion thing very well require usually extensive moderation and/or strict posting/citiation guidelines. And while this would be very cool to see, even the current level of moderation is already a bit much for some users i surmise from a glance at the last pages of this thread. And while i understand the frustrations that most affected users are from a one side of the political spectrum, there are already some straight up insane takes in this thread and i am pretty sure that chaos doesnt want "Domestic terrorist radicalized on smogon.com" as a news headline in the near future.

Personally i would like to see seperate threads with the current guidelines for the upcoming US elections and the I/P conflict and this thread with some enforced quoting/effortposting. This might just kill the General News thread and gets the I/P thread closed, but at least it open a door for the people who would be interested in some niche topics and unbloat this thread.
just going to touch on the domestic terrorism part specifically since the other issues have been mentioned by other users. To me it reads at best you are implying radical left positions that you obviously disagree with and have all right too would lead to domestic terrorism by just being discussed. at worse it is above+ the context of editing it in after a person who is openly Palestinian and has lived in Lebanon (correct me if I am wrong) responded to you playing right into bigoted, racist, and dangerous stereotypes often associated with people from those 2 locations. I'm not going to pretend i know your views or the reason you wrote that in, but its pretty disgusting to write that in whatever way you meant it whether I'm charitable to you or not

I was doing an art study what the fuck happned. Domestic terrorism????????????? Ignoring how charged that accusation is (because everyone else already pointed it out) this is an extremely tame forum and posts that get closer to barebones communism are already seen as incredibly radical by some. True radicalization often takes much more than this, especially radicalization to the left, because right wing radicalization's pipelines are much easier to find lol

Lebanese & Palestinian, I live in the USA but we spent 1-2 months a year in Lebanon when I was growing up. Good enough to get terrorist allegations and to get bombed by the IOF as a child, though

I just wanted to bring something up since my name was brought up yesterday and I didn't have time to respond in a lengthy post. I truly enjoy the conversations here a lot, I was Community Leader at the time (late last year) and I kept bringing up the topic of re-opening the thread because I think it's important to have this type of dialogues on this site regardless of it not being a related to competitive Pokemon. Since 'Congregation Of the Masses' subforum was pretty dead in terms of activity / moderating in general, reopening the thread wasn't a possibility until new moderators were brought in (Eve, Oglemi and myself) were nominated. I then pushed the goal of opening this thread (with Oglemi and myself) doing a majority of the moderating. Myself in general I'm pretty laissez faire about deleting posts / infracting because I like conversations to run through as long as it isn't offensive / attacking people or backgrounds. This in general will probably change in order to make effort in keeping this thread opened and we'll have to moderate more aggressively.

We have to work as a community and we all have lives outside of this site, please use the report feature if you see anything that breaks the rules (I feel like this is underutilized to a big extent). In terms of baiting and trolling, I'm just going to be upfront (users know who they are) it will kind of be a zero tolerance threadban right away in order to keep this thread opened (if still possible). If there are any concern or question please send a DM to me or Oglemi.

This tends to be your response when you disagree with someone. I admire your passion and being so adamant that your opinions are always correct.

Good luck in November. I won’t rub it in when I’m right :)

Kind of crazy to come out and say that discussing leftist politics leads to domestic terrorism while complaining about unsourced and unsubstantiated posts, but that guy honestly just said the quiet part out loud. I would wager most liberals fundamentally agree with them. It's a legitimate concern to them that talking about issues from a leftist perspective might radicalize someone into doing something violent, but supporting the Israeli state as it slaughters another few thousand women and children is an acceptable and understandable position to take, even if they ostensibly don't agree. Liberals will always side with fascists before leftists.

You're both overlooking the real reason Florida is turning so red — the influx of conservative retirees. The fastest-growing "city" in Florida is just an overgrown retirement home and Florida's median age is the fifth-highest in the nation. Compare that to Texas, which has a much more varied group of people moving in due to job opportunities in the city and is the second youngest state by median age. Texas moved from +16 Republican in 2012 to +9 in 2016 and +5.5 in 2020, compared to Florida which went from -1 in 2012 to +1 in 2016 and +3.5 in 2020. Obviously, only one of these states is trending in our direction.

sorry to interrupt the fascinating discussion on whether florida is mostly far right or mostly the other flavor of far right, but in the mayoral election debate for the city of São Paulo a candidate from our own fascist party called another candidate a pussy and then got hit with a fucking steel chair to the dome

that's real politics baby

Already bookmarked the post. It wasn’t just my opinion- it’s what you said:

Obama won Florida twice remember. That means Democratic ancestry is there and yes it is a swing state. Obama won the Latino vote by more than 20 in both races.

“Cubans and Dominicans will never vote blue.” (False, Obama split the Cuban vote and Dominicans vote Democratic)

“Nor will those from Haiti”
Yeah, Haitian Americans of which there are 300,000 RV in Florida, vote Democratic and you claim they are going to vote for the ticket accusing them of eating pets.

This is a fair point for sure. Though intriguing is that Trump is not popular among seniors. Probably because he openly wants to gut social security and Medicare. Biden did unusually well among 65+ and basically split what was a reliably Republican demographic. We will see if Harris inherits this.

This thread just doesn't improve Smogon or strengthen its communities in any way. Can we please just close it again
I think I saw chaos post once that the reason there is a politics thread to begin with is because people will talk about politics either way and this is a way to contain it into just one place, which I thought was pretty smart. Either way the appetite you have for censorship is quite chilling im glad that something happened behind the scenes where you cant just decide to lock it on your own anymore.

that's basically what moot was saying when he created /pol/. I mean I agree, it is a good idea to contain politics in a single thread, just funny how 4chan did the same thing for the same reasons with a very different result

The main difference not even being that /pol/ is right wing and this here is left, rather that we here discuss things that actually happen, whilst /pol/ just discusses collective schizo visions

This is the bit I cannot get my head round.

Surely the non partisan, humanist position which we all should share, is the observation that what Israel has been doing for nearly a year now, is just appalling and needs to be stopped?

I started making a list of the verified atrocities and human rights and international humanitarian law breaches that have been reported with photographs and videos by the world press, and it was both heart breaking, demoralising, and lengthy; the current list stands at over 400 examples and that just covers between 8 October up to 23rd December.

I tried cross referencing it against the satellite imagery and couldn’t manage it, it’s too painful.

I have no idea how investigative journalists and fact finders from the UN and the aid groups have the strength of spirit to do those jobs, because I’ve never, in my life, seen so much done in so little time, on such a small area of land, with so many people on it, with so much weaponry, and so much “collateral damage” - except in my studies on Srebrenica, the Holocaust and in Rwanda.

And Gaza is currently outpacing two of those three for deaths, displacement, and destruction by huge ratios.

That we are at a point of starvation for literally millions (number of aid trucks going in during August halved from July - so don’t tell me starvation isn’t being used as a weapon of war - https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2024/sep/12/gaza-aid-food-medical-supplies-backlog )

Honestly I don’t get how this isn’t on some basic level with everyone not “what the actual F is Israel doing, please stop this” - who the hell wants an ally that’s committed such an obvious genocide as an ally and trading partner?

Only it seems those who want to actively be participating in it (USA, UK, France, Germany).

If you take out the history and take out the religions, and you take out claims to land, etc, you are still left with 2.3 million people with no formal army, navy, air force, being bombed by the fourth largest army supported by the largest military in the world.

Something is wrong with humanity if we can’t see obvious injustices and act on those injustices.

are you just now figuring this out?
Is this supposed to be a “gotcha” question? Because I’m not sure it’s the gotcha you think it is.

The point being made is that we’re all supposed to have some basic level of humanity, it’s not on show enough in certain aspects of discussion (but I would say globally, the protest movements are increasing in size and number so I retain hope).

the post was a half joke, half commentary on the state of the world. It was not a gotcha.
