European and Chinese history is always "stuff happens, then hordes from the steppes come"

Like what is it with this fucking flatlands that just makes the sickest warriors in human history. It's always wars across the regions that are completely dwarfed by the hordes. And then you read the history of the people from the steppes and them bending over empires are basically footnotes to the internal wars they had

tl;dr is that the hordes are able to grow their population while the war torn country is stagnant because all their men are dying to war and everyone else is dying to famine or from raids if they aren't just kidnapped and dragged to some other country. the weapons quality isn't a big difference because once something can stab a guy wearing steel and your entire army has the tools to do so you're more or less fine on that front.

there's obviously gonna be more to it though. genghis khan spent a solid portion of his life uniting the mongol tribes to form a force strong enough to beat out a war torn china and they grew from there, on top of their policy of "the leaders can stay intact so we can keep raiding asia". the reason they never made it deep into europe is because getting from mongolia to eastern europe is already long enough on horseback and ghengis had to make sure the guys he kept in charge in asia were actually paying him money, and by the time he made it to europe the guy was old and couldn't fight anymore so he split everything among his sons and they started fighting and never really made progress on attacking europe. then things just fell apart from there.

having english words that aren't translatable is the worst

I don't think English speakers realize how huge that language is compared to others. I cannot find a translation for sincere, sonder, or consumate that has the appeal of these words

Being a mix between different languages may make English combersome and illogical at times, but it's the one language I know that has every state of mind and action reflected in clear words

This is actually a quirk of English iirc! Words have differing levels of fanciness. I believe it's due to how often Britain was invaded and how lots of different languages mixed together into English.

The example I've seen is kingly/royal/regal, three different words from three different root languages that all technically mean the same thing but have differing levels of fanciness to them.

forums are the new thing dude. tons of teenagers who are tired of constant rushes of dopamine and depression through standard social media's method of using algorithms to optimize profits are looking for something new, and what better than the tried and true method known as "forums" where you get to wait 1-2 hours for a response? it really ticks all of the boxes.

I've talked about this before but I will re-iterate my "forum revival movement" hypothesis. Literally all the conditions are in place from 2000s nostalgia being in its heyday to people becoming more jaded and dissatisfied with the algorithms with each passing day. I feel like all that's needed is one last straw that breaks the camel's back, I'm just not sure what that would be.

Heck, maybe it's already started. When I first joined Bulbagarden I immediately was surprised by the amount of young active users and how many accounts have been made in the past couple of years. I thought most of my conversations would be with oldheads from no later than 2013, not people still in grade school!

I don't know how much more popular they're going to get, but I do know that forums such as this have a certain air about them that you just don't get from major social media websites. It's why I'm here, at least.
