GSC Cup XI - Round 6

Thunder management simulator.

Tournament Rules
  • General tournament rules and regulations can be found here.
  • Smogon Classic rules can be read here.
  • Standard GSC OU.
  • Best of three, single elimination.
  • Matches are to be played on Smogtours, unless both parties agree to play on Main PS! server.
  • Do not make baseless activity posts -- get in contact with your opponent and report missed times / scheduling issues only.
  • Replays will be required starting in Round 2 of the tournament.
    • Replays in winposts must be easily findable and accessible as per this.
This is just a small snippet of the full rules, which you can find here!

Identity

About playing on alts: It is entirely allowed to play on an alt other than your own main forum name, though if your opponent wishes to confirm your identity, you must log on to your main alt to show them you are who you claim to be. This is to prevent people from pretending to be who they're not. Furthermore, pretending to be another player in relation to a tournament battle is strictly prohibited. Do not try to impersonate or play as another player.

About playing on different servers: Tournament matches must be played on the Smogtours server. The Main PS! server is also acceptable if both parties agree to that. Other servers are not sanctioned by the TD team and playing in them might result in your game not counting. Protect yourself from that by playing on Smogtours, where we also have the power to recreate games that end due to DC's.

Scouting

On scouting opponents: Going through your opponents replays of tournament and ladder games is entirely allowed, as long as a game is public there is nothing preventing you from watching it. An exception to this is abusing powers granted to you by being staff on Smogon or PS! to gain access to information a normal user wouldn't have access to, which is strictly forbidden.

On leaking teams: Divulging private information about someone's planned team to their opponent is never allowed, and will be heavily sanctioned. Requesting that such information be divulged is also grounds for punishment. Keep your scouting to publicly available information and you'll be fine.

Timer Clause / Disconnections

On the Timer: The timer must stay on throughout the whole battle.

On Timeout losses: A player that loses by having all his time run out loses the game. This is only not the case if the player that received the timeout loss can be verified to have suffered a True Disconnection. Rematches are only allowed if there was a True Disconnection.

On True Disconnection: The TD team has a secret threshold of seconds that your timer must be at or above, from the moment you disconnect, for a timeout loss to be considered a True Disconnection. If your game is determined to be a true disconnection, if you played on Smogtours and contacted a TD before the room expired, your game will be recreated up to the point the disconnect happened. It is the responsibility of the player that disconnected to get a TD into the room before it expires.

Predicts:
Don Eduardo  > Groudon
Kenix is the better player here, but Groudon has put up some good results so far. I don't think Groudon is bringing any fishy/tricky teams in the builder so I would favour Kenix based on in game play. Predicitng 2-1, so with luck or choke in the builder by kenix could easily go the other way

Kristyl  > PDC
I haven't followed either of their games closely, but Kristyl is more familiar with the tier imo.

gorgie  >  tylerkehne
Gorgie"s been on a tear lately, playing with more of an open style in game which lets him mitigate the tedency of builder-heavy players to get locked into play patterns / loops. Tyler on the other hand is developing his own style of play, while still mixing it up in brings and reads in game. To me the battle will come down to who gives their opponent more breathing room, either through mu or early game play, as both these players are dangerous if you give them time to lock into their gameplan.

Fear  >  Bohrier
Fear has been piloting fairly aggreaive offenses, and the last time i saw Bohrier gsc was in bkcpl 2 year ago. Have to go with Fear.

shiloh  vs  (Winner of GLFGno7  vs  BlazingDark)
Going to go with Glfgno here, as long as he plays around the light screen + cursetar / phys offenses BD favours (i.e. dont bring passive double electric) I think he should win.

Skarpherim  >  stunner047
Is Skarpherim is the excal guy this year? Seem to play well enough vs Kenan so will weakly favour him over Stunner.

Siatam  >  The_App
Depends on how much effort Siatam is putting in, but if he is will be hard for The App to when (though he is making good progress). Siatam is uniquely good at picking out the undercurrents of his opponents playstyle, which is a hard adjustment if unprepared.

(Winner of Isza  vs  ima)  < SoulWind
Isza is getting better with each match, and does have good playmaking abilities, but is not quite at Soulwinds level in gsc imo. Soulwind is pretty good at locking down the game and has a good instinctive game, so if Isza is left behind after the early game it will be hard to come back. If he can get into an even position vs Soulwinds stalls it should be an interesting match.

Don Eduardo  vs  Groudon
A GSC main staple against Groudon, who had an exceptionally good SPL record in DPP.
Kenix will bring what he believes in and what works for him and Groudon, well apparently he has been just using Kenix teams in previous rounds, so will we see him repeat this?
Will he try to defeat the creator with his own weapons? We will see.
Regarding who is going to win this, I will put my money on Kenix due to his experience but I wouldn't totally count out Groudon. He is a good player.

Kristyl  vs  PDC
I know Kristyl plays GSC and if I'm not entirely wrong, also builds in the tier which gives them a good head start against a well known memeber of the tournament scene: PDC!

PDC isn't to be taken lightly, despite him most likely coming back from a longer break, he did dabble in GSC in the past and with the support he may have he probably found a good foundation of teams for the tier.

I personally could see this go either way but my gut feeling tells me PDC is taking this home.

gorgie  vs  tylerkehne
A veteran up against a new soldier on the field! Gorgie, who has been around for over two decades now, has a ton experience and always this unique twist to the tier in itself that may sometimes cause people to have difficulty to figure out what to expect.

On the otherhand we have tylerkehne, a relatively new face who has been slowly establishing himself as one of the new kids on the block. He has good plays, knows his way around the tier but the question is will this be enough for gorgie?

Maybe I'm biased here but I'm going with my brother G to take this home.

Fear  vs  Bohrier
A dominant force against a lesser known person in the realm of GSC at least. I will keep this quick and believe Fear takes this home. I´ve seen too little of Bohrier to make a more indepth prediction here.

Siatam  vs  The_App
Siatam, a GSC SPL Staple nowadays, is up against and up and coming new face in the GSC OU realm: The_App.

Siatam most known for his sometimes unique choices of pokemon on his teams or movesets he likes to bring. As an example: Lead Alakazam last SPL or last round of GSC CUP: Gligar! You never know what to expect and what he has hidden in the vault.

The_App a new fresh face, knowing his way around and not afraid to use some more unique structures. A heracross fan as well from what I have seen these past rounds of him too.

Based off experience, I believe Siatam takes this home.

Isza  vs  SoulWind
More known as an RBYer, we have Isza up against one of smogons best players: SoulWind.

Isza just recently decided to focus more on GSC, even had a decent run for his at the time little experience in the past iteration of GSC Invitational hosted by Siatam. The question is, will this be enough to take down SoulWind?

SoulWind is good at GSC overall and has the ability to compete with the best of the tier in it. He knows the tier, he has a good game sense in it and seems to have his preferences in it as well. And that doesn't even account for the potential support in the back regarding team choices he has.

I think SoulWind takes this home but personally I'm rooting here for my friend Isza.
