they are calling it the most pokemon player take of all time
i have yet to play a single non-fighting competitive game where high variety has correlated with positive gameplay ever, and pokemon is no exception.
high variety comes with several issues:
1. more things that are viable means more things to check, which almost always means that every team is less consistent by default. you cant cover everything so you're either going to take the L and leave big holes or try to cover more and be worse off against the things you're trying to cover, likely blown up by tech sets on things you were trying to check
2. lack of cohesion in the meta, or less centralization, also leads to less consistency as your team will have less focus, making it less consistent. if you know that there are a core 20-25 pokemon that are the bulk of what you see, you can teambuild to tech around and check that and be more confident
and consistency is the name of the game. as far as i am concerned, if there are a lot of consistent archetypes that can all do well into each other, even if within those archetypes its the same shit over and over again, then its balanced
idgaf about what the usage stats for tauros are, is it actually a game that is fun to play turn by turn and do your decisions matter, and in this format yes they do, every playstyle is able to cover each other at least to an extent
all the vgc player tier list videos I've seen debate whether its 1 or 2 but zard y is probably overrated in general and people seem to largely be trolling with gengar instead of using it to deal damage
zard y is kind of in the spot of easiest weather setter to tech around but its kind of the gatekeeper imo. lets not forget its like top 3 most favorite pokemon ever at all times
i find that char y teams that do the same sash venu/whimsicott -> char y -> sneasler incin etc kind of just lack longevity compared to other styles, like arch can run lefties or chople/shuca as rain's wincon and will just not get blown up immediately almost all the time, or you can redirect stuff etc., ttar is hard to chip down with a sinistcha and incin to tug on sneaslers chain, excadrills sash feels more consistent than others imo because of its speed control and general resistances
i think char y teams need to kinda adapt a bit and have more longevity and then they remain #1 for likely the rest of the format
mega gengar do be trolling but thats rlly its job, iirc people are starting to run mega gengar kommomomo to get setup which is neat, sometimes mega gengar on lead just never really dies it can be super oppressive imo
i think if mega floette becomes #1 it'll be on rain teams, i used it on weatherless balance and while its solid and can beat every mu, without weather control you're always carefully disarming the bomb of the weather opps wincon before you can finally send out mega floette. its really good but i think when on rain next to some shit like basculegion as speed control it becomes more of a problem, and rain doesn't really have 'a mega'
most of this is just based on my laddering and looking at usage/hearing things, so maybe mega floette has already become the thing on rain but i am expecting that might become the method, and if so probably the most tough variant of it to face
