CAP 5 CAP 5 - Part 2 (Primary Typing Poll 1)

Choice 1: Rock
Choice 2: Ice

Special ROCK sweeper would be awesome... Especially if it's Rock/Bug typed... That is a good typing.

Physical Ice user is needed. Mamoswine so far is the only real one, and all he can use are Ice Fang or Ice Shard. Both aren't very strong. A Skill-Linker Icicle Spear would be nice, as well as a stronger-than-Ice-Punch physical Ice Move by a STABber.

We already have 3 Physical Psychic users: Medicham, Metagross and Gallade...

None of them could go mixed. The only Psychic type that could go mixed without sacrificing much is Jirachi. And when is the last time you saw a mixed Meta?

For those trying to keeping track, here are the top seven:

Rock - 37
Electric - 27
Dragon - 11
Steel - 11
Fighting - 6
Grass - 5
Psychic - 5

Also, people seem to be voting on type-pairings; this is just a primary type vote, not a vote for both of its types...

I'm pretty sure those were the only ones people voted for.
EDIT: Dark isn't there, my bad.

1.) Rock
2.) Steel

With either of these types it would be easy to "break the mold" in a couple different ways (but we'll save that for future polls!), and not go overboard or encroach upon the other CaPs.

Now that that is out of the way...I really really hope that Dragon does not get picked: everyone seems to want a defensive dragon, which is pretty much just an upgraded Altaria (and therefore not "breaking the mold" anyway...isn't the point of this concept to make something that hasn't been done before?). The only option which fits with the concept then is a special-oriented dragon, which I really don't think we could make into a balanced pokemon, since Salamence is already a huge dick to deal with on the special side, and any upgrade of that is too much imo - but anything slower would likely be too weak.

Dragon is a type which is really hard to balance overall, due to a plethora of good resistances and only two weaknesses, both of which are really easy to see coming. I don't think we could balance it without testing, which is not a part of the process; probably the majority of people voting in these polls don't even play CaP anyway.

I suppose I'll pose this as a question here: are people who are essentially voting for a "defensive dragon" going against the concept? Because imo if a pokemon fitting this one's description already exists (Altaria in this case), then we are pretty obviously not "breaking the mold." I don't see how this is any different than if I had suggested that Fidgit should be a sweeper...in both cases it is pretty clearly not the intent of the concept. Though I suppose we would need to have latino's opinion on this!

1. Electric
Most Electric type are High Spd, low Def Spc sweepers. The highest Def for an Electric is Magnezone, and when you couple that with a 4x weak to the most common move in the game (Earthquake), its not too impressive. The second highest is Zapdos's meager 85 Def, and all other Electrics don't even hit 80. .-.
2. Fire
I'd much rather see Electric than Fire, but Fire types don't have much bulk either, baring Pyroak, Torkoal(.-.), and Heatran. D:

1. Steel
Steel's fastest pokemon is Jirachi, at 100. We can go faster than that... its a clear stereotype, very high def, good SpD, ok Atk mostly low HP/SpA/Spe
2. Rock
Another clear Stereotype. POWER GEM SWEEP.

Obviously not both....

You have the same reasoning as me for Steel, but you pointed out exactly why I'm not voting Rock. About the only special stab (assuming it went special) it would get is Power Gem. Rock STAB is not something to get excited about for a special sweeper.. I mean, I'm missing the point other than novelty.

Even worse, the concept almost forces it to be a special sweeper if it's rock, considering fast, physical sweeper has been done (Aerodactyl); bulky, physical sweeper has been done (Rhyperior); mixed sweeper has been done (Tyranitar); special wall has been done (Cradily); and physcial wall has been done (Regirock). All that is left is something fast with a high special attack.

Electric

Ground

I love Electric now because Zapdos has really never left my team, and Ground sounds pretty cool I guess, the only one I wanted for sure was Electric.

The purpose of the concept is to make something original which doesn't conform to existing typing-based stereotypes. Since a useful bulky electric already exists, how can you justify choosing electric without going against the concept?

You have a point, but that depends if you find Altaria effectively defensive. Like I said earlier, a REAL defensive dragon would be nice; one that's OU. Dragonite could probably fit the description best but I think a dragon that can take a hit and tell syclant to gtfo would work. TBH, it probably won't win but I had to say it. (A good amount to say for something I didn't even vote for.) Nonetheless, I don't think it's all that bad.

Rock looks like it's winning this...but rock is such a crap type. We'd have to make it's other type flying or something so it can't get raped by CCs or EQs.

Choice 1: Ice
Choice 2: Water

An Ice-type in OU would be interesting, if it found a way to bypass the hurt brought on by Stealth Rock. So maybe an Ice-type with stronger defenses?

A less-than-bulky Water type would be a nice change too, given that Water-types have well-rounded stats, something that leans more towards attacking would be unexpected.

1. Dragon
2. Fighting

Sure they both have a pokemon or two that perform specially, but these are both two VERY physical types...

ROCK? WTF ;_;

THE ONLY GOOD ROCK TYPES ARE RHYPERIOR AND TYRANITAR, WE'RE DIGGING OURSELVES A GRAVE HERE ;_;

The purpose of the concept is to make something original which doesn't conform to existing typing-based stereotypes. Since a useful bulky electric already exists, how can you justify choosing electric without going against the concept?

Maybe the nonconformity could also come from a lack of ability, like a lack of a high special attack. Maybe a bulky electric is not so new, but if it lacks speed and special attack it is already breaking the mold, isn't it? Besides, Zapdos isn't really commited to its role stat wise, and a more focused stat spread and different movepool would make this pokemon stand out were it to be electric.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that is questioning the Rock bandwagon here...

Grass

Fighting

Grass types need some more competitive play besides Tangrowth and Vileplume in OU and UU respectively. Fighting also needs some new competition for its' typing:)
