Pokemon and High School?

Why don't you just turn it into the joke it is? If someone is gonna be a dickhole to you about it, challenge them to a match. If they don't step up to the plate you know their torment is unfounded and that you are the clear winner.

Seriously though, just run with the joke. It's alot less fun for people if you not only go along with it but you make it worse (on yourself). Soon they'll find a new person to harass and all you'll have left is a rep for having a good sense of humor.

A lot of the people in my school still have a crush on Pokemon, and most liked it at one time, so no one really makes a big deal of it if someone is found out to still like it!

Plus, liking Pokemon is sort of like a "retro" fad nowadays.

I have a similar situation. I am surprised at how many people play it (not competitively unfortunately); and if they don't play it still brings them a sense of nostalgia. I actually played at lunch a lot last year..... and in math, and chemistry. People usually just come over and watch or ignore it. I usually have someone to play with too though. I don't think you have that luxury.

i go to a high school where we all love pokemon. not like smogon ppl everywhere, but every 1 likes it. only my 5 closest friends no about the iv's and complex stuff, so we r seen a breeding gods. i love it :P

I'd brush it off and play along with them. Telling people to fuck off or being insecure about it'll only make them harass ya more

Never had this problem... everyone who matters to me already knows I play it... I was pretty secretive until I saw one of my friends playing it, so then I challenged him to a battle at lunch... everyone found out quickly after that. Joel (thats his name) was considered to be the best pokemon nerd in the school, but I beat him handily, so I got quasi famous because of that... lol

I do feel some sort of Gratitude knowing I'm the best Pokemon player in my school, but then again, approx 5% of my school plays Pokemon.

Meh no one knows about it at my school... Kids might make fun of me for it, but if school found out it might be a ISS or something..
The school finds it satanic cuz there assholes. Dumb christian school...
I mean im kinda a christian and I dont think its satanic at all.

i remember my highly christian cousin + his family thought the whole psychic type was like bad and stuff, back when pokemon just came out and i had the cards and stuff...

I am a closet player, but i've heard people talk about it in high school, specifically when d/p came out, and even saw a couple playing it during boring classes. But I didn't care to engage in pokemon conversation, w/e

Wow. This was my family pretty much. I was never allowed to play pokemon until Sapphire came out. And when I did start playing I avoided Psychic types so that if my parents saw me playing they wouldn't see anything "bad". Eventually I stopped caring and Psychic is my second favourite type...

/ off topic

I've never had a problem with pokemon, all of my friends have either played it, or are nerds in other ways, although I'm the only one who plays competitively. the rest of the people I meet get a huge "nerd" impression right off the bat, so it doesn't really matter that I play pokemon.

There used to be a sizable competitive community here, but unfortunately people moved on to super smash bros. I've only seen two other people that were into it.... last year.

I do talk with my friend about competitive pokemon sometimes; it's pretty cool cause he can understand the shit I explain to him. Maybe he'll come when platinum comes? hmm

To be honest, not a lot of people care about kiddish games here; you should see how many anime-obsessed people there are here.

Laugh with them, don't let them laugh at you. It makes the fun wear out of it for the others after a while. Simple solution that only requires some facial muscles.

Well, at the break i sometimes play with my friend. We both play competitively and we test our teams at each other so thats kinda fun.

But everytime people come to where we sit and their curious what we're playing. They see that it's pokemon and they starting to say: Damn, aren't you to old for that, not even my little sister plays pokemon and she's six. I usually ignore it but my friend gets angry pretty quickly.

I don't know how to stop it. He says like everytime he sees me: Pokemon Addicted and he repeats it loud. I hate those bullies, im 15 and im not that strong, so i can't beat them up. My friend does though, hes very big.

Someone has got a solution to keep those bullie out of my sight, i mean i don't even take my DS to school, because i don't want people to know. Only a really kewl Classmate of mine thinks its cute, yes she's a girl :P.

I think she's the only 1 not bullying me and my other friends.

pokemon is worse than yugioh at my school sooooooo and yeah i have been caught talkign about the games to one kid but we were talking about the awesomeness of silver and well becasue i'm a freshman and 6'7 people don't give me shit about it cause i can bench 200 pounds...

Dude, I kno exactly how you feel. My situation is similar: I am in a private school, in honors classes, but Im pretty athletic and decently popular, so if you were to pick the kid who plays pokemon out of a crowd that i was in, you would never, ever pick me. two of my friends kno i play, and share my interest in the game, and these are kids that also keep it in secret and you would never guess played. Its quite funny, 2 of us were on the football team and the other is like a tennis prodidy, but like we kept it in secret and noone found out/ told anyone else about what went down. We refered to it as "the secret club" when talking about it and noone knew what the hell we were talking about loll. But eventually one of my friends decided to focus more on oblivion on his 360 during his free time, saying hed never catch up and be as good as me and my other friend. So my friend and I had quite a few battles (i beat him every time, but this was before we knew about smogon, evs, ivs etc.) but as I did more research online about how to become better, learning the ropes and such, my friend was a little slower in doing so. I eventually surpassed him by a huge amount, I actually don't think he has a competitve eved team, never mind IV oriented. But our secret never got out, which is quite amazing, howver we all knew if word got out wed be wrecked by everyone else, similar to your story. Dude, i really dont know how to give you advice except to just laugh at any pokemon joke and to act like it doesnt affect you, that way people will lay off you and eventually forget about it. Its amazing how people dont kno how competitve and fun pokemon could be.. they dont know what their missing out on!

EDIT: this was last year, when I was a freshman. One of these friends left my school to go to another one, and I dont talk to the other friend about Pokemon anymore. I guess I am the only one who got to the next level..

I don't think it's as bad for a girl to like Pokemon, because all of my friends think it's adorable. When it "slipped out". There's also other people at my school who play mostly GSC, and yeah. From time to time, I bring Pokedolls to school and no one really cares, it's mostly actually "AWWWWWW, they're so adorable!"

The guys sometimes make fun of me, though. Of course, the ones who don't are desperate idiots who don't want to offend me on account of them trying to flirt with me? =/

I'm pretty much the same way. The main reason why I never discuss it with anyone is because no one plays anymore. The only time I hear about Pokemon is when people talk about it in retrospect.

I agree with kevin garnett. Still, I know a few people who play it (not competetively, mind you), abut haven't challenged them to battle or anythng.

I've developed a small group were what we play what I like to call Semi/Competitive. We don;t care too much for IVs since it kinda ruins the fun of raising them :-/ but we do focus on natures and EVs and once we get better we're sure to make the jump. Right now we're gonna have a small tournament where we will (if they agree) wager Pokemon Clones. The big fish I'm after is a Jolly Tyranitar (since my buddy wont clone his adament.) oh and here's a new joke someone used.

"Why is it a good thing to bring a pokemon to the bathroom with you?" and I said I don't know why? the he said "So it can Peek-At-Chu"

I lypsynced (each class does one) the anime theme song for homecoming...."i wana be the best" lol it was epic i had my friends dress up as pokemon and i had ashes hat and everything it was great the ladies were all over me.

Really, start talking like a total nerd and dont get pissed off when they make fun of you they are just looking for a good laugh. Just go around talk like jon heder and ask people who there fav. pokemon is i do it all the time. Have fun.

This is so true, it's borderline annoying.

As for the OP, I'm guessing those quotes were over-exaggerated to the extreme. People who criticize you for playing something like Pokemon tend not to get too specific with their insults (how is the bond with ash and pikachu?? or whatever), instead they tend to say something like 'hey so and so's a (BAN ME PLEASE) he plays Pokemon'.

Anyhow, I'm not sure what kind of wacky school you go to, since wearing a Pokemon shirt anywhere were else in 2008 would get you mad props, and by default, grant you a 'that is so fucking indie' kind of image.

Not that you should be proud of that. Seriously, kids these days play Pokemon for all the wrong reasons.

I've heard only a couple of acknowledgments of Pokemon even existing in High School and I just started my Senior year...
I guess nobody would really care if I liked it or not though. I mean nobody even giggles at me for mentioning I like Legos- another thing that is somewhat geared towards kids.
I actually tried to be friends with the people who were into Pokemon, but they always fit in even better than I did!
Clearly, it's nothing you'll be exiled for.

I'm not in high school personally, but I still get crap from it. I haven't been bugged about it for a few years, but even in 6th grade people bothered me about it.(I'm in 8th now) I don't bring it up, usually. I told a tennis buddy awhile back, he didn't care, but people in my school would bug the crap out of me. I don't look like I play pokemon AT ALL! xD I'm another of those "closet pokemon" people. lol. If anybody ever asked, I'd admit it though. I don't feel ashamed of it, I just don't tell people openly.
