Godammit, I hate large heads, it was only sheer luck that it didn't break my chain. In other news, I've finally decided, going for Timid Budews.

EDIT: Ralts broke my chain at a pathetic 8. I still don't get it, how am I supposed to know which patches are good and which arent?

EDIT 2: No, really, how do you guys know which 4-aways are good and which are bad?
 
  1. I confuse 3 patches with 4 patches, ending the chain.
  2. I don't really understand which are good and bad formations, so I accidentally end the chain.
  3. Someimes I don't find the 3 and 4 patches before they stop shaking, so I have no other option but to end the chain
  4. I can't memorize the placement of all the patches at once, so while I make my way to the 4--away I step into one and I end my chain.
Help.

I mean, the highest I've gotten is an 8. AN 8. And yet here are all these guys complaining about that none of the 50+ shinies they got in a single run has adequate IVs. No offense, it just gets me feeling kinda down.

Really, if anyone can help me it would be much appreciated. BLERGH!

Read the guide a few times, and practice, practice, practice. When I get out of practice, despite doing things like chaining over a hundred Torkoals and Nidoran Ms, I'm lucky if I can get to 25 by my third time through. Just have to learn to recognize the patterns and rules.
 
Meh... nearly 2 AM in Venezuela and here are my results:

My highest chain is now of 9 Budews, as opposed to 8 Budews. This marks a significant improvement for me. Also I believe I am starting to grasp the basics, because whenever I wnter a bad patch, the thought that my chain is ending hits me before I see the Ralts (for some bizarre reason it's always up to them to end my chains) on the screen. This means I actually DO recognize the threat, only not in time.

So, what I have to do is to stop and think a little bit longer before I enter the patch, but it is difficult when you think at night while trying to sleep that you might have a mild case of ADD that explains my hate of homework. I get distracted from chaining easily, I set my eyes on another thing and suffer a momentary lapse. My determination, though strong in my heart, is not in my mind. And it is not helping that whenever I end a chain, Budews suddenly disappear as if wiped off the face of the Earth.

Also, when you enter a patch near the edge of the screen, is it possible that a couple of patches (mostly the 3 and 4 patches) won't show up after you finish the battle? And is there a better route than Route 204 (South) for chaining Budews?

Help.
1. Try and count the spaces as you walk, therefore if you've only waled two paces left and the next one is a patch you know not to go into it.
2. Re-read the guide a lot. Helped me heaps.
3. If you don't find a 4-away you like don't walk into any patches. You can always take another 50 steps and use the radar again. Nothing is forcing you to break the chain here.
4. Should come with time. Just practice a bit. Learn the formations first, that'll help you recognise them. You can't recognise them if you don't know what you're looking for.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is because when you have your Pokeapp set to the chaining app it tells you if you break your chain, as the Pokemon you're currently chaining will go blank, before the battle commences. It's not your subconcience realising the patch is bad :S

Also, when you enter a patch near the edge of the screen, is it possible that a couple of patches (mostly the 3 and 4 patches) won't show up after you finish the battle?
Yes, the 4 away could land in a patch without grass and hence you'll get no 4 away shake. Just reset the radar and try again.
 
Yes, it is possible for the farther patches to not show up if you go near the edge. If you're actually going to the end of the grass, don't; it can break your chain randomly (meaning you get Budew, but then no patches shake afterwards and your chain breaks). I do not know about Budow though. Eterna Forest has some really large grassy areas, and huge areas are the easiest to chain.

The thing you have to remember is patience. If you're not sure, don't take the chance out of frustration. Reset if you're unsure, missed the patches, or just plain don't like what shook.

Actually, it is, I have my Poketch set to the time function. Thanks for all the tips guys I'm going to do better next time...

...when I finally find a fucking Budew <_<

My other explanation is your paranoid and think every patch will break the chain (much like me), therefore if it does break you're wright but if it doesn't you're a winner anyway XD

I think you're right, I do get pretty paranoid. Also while starting to post this, a Budew *finally* appeared. Sunday you're mah lucky charm from now on *rubs*.

The bold orange three, is that a 3-away patch, because it's three steps to the left away, or is it a 6-away patch, because that's how many steps it would take in total to get to it?

I know this is probably basic stuff, but it has me confused. :S
 
x-away refers to how far away it is in one direction, not how many steps it'd take to get to it.

Edit: I think lines are okay, provided they're not touching. That's what I've always gone by anyway.

Well, the first formation is certainly odd, but I think the sanme as TomD, if they're not touching it's not bad.

To explain the second formation, you see that the grid is like this:

There are 1s, 2s, 3s, and 4s. When you activate a radar there will ALWAYS be one patch in each number shaking. By their position we determine if it's a good formation or bad formation.

I have a question too. When you get past 40 (not that I have even broken into the double digits

Yes. There won't be shiny patches appearing of Pokémon that are not your chain. The only shiny patches you shouldn't be entering are those not surrounded by 8 other patches of grass (i. e. all the 1s are supposed to be grass) because then there is a chance all patches will fall outside the actual grass, breaking your chain.

Also, I CAUGHT MY FIRST SHINY! In my opinion, there are only four shiny Pokémon evolution lines that are chainable that look considerably better than their normal forms, which are Gardevoir/Gallade, Azumarril, Metagross, and Luxray.

i'm really angry. For my first time i chained over 40.

I chained 41 nincadas, the shiny one didn't appeared. I stepped in a "safe" patch...AND A FUCKIN WURMPLE BROKE MY CHAIN u_u

I'ts unfair...anyway...what's the ratio for the first shiny to appear in the chain? I thought than was 40, but that did't happened in my case.

Anyway, i'm going to check the IVs/nature of the nincadas than i catched
 
when you reach a chain of 40 theres a one in 50 chance of the next one being shiny, keep resetting your radar until you get a safe shiny patch ( not touching edges or any objects)

MMM...then i suppose than was my mistake...when i reach 40 i'm suppose to spam repels/radar until i get it...ok, thanks for the advise.

Anyway, i got one male Nincada with Adamant Nature and Double 31 in HP and Speed....i'm gonna take that one as a consolation prize

Chain ended! Well, I can't say I'm sad. I sort of wanted it to end to look at my shinies. :D

I got three:

Female Adamant Intimidate Ultra Ball (First shiny ever :D)
Male Adamant Intimidate Ultra Ball
Male Adamant Rivalry Pokéball

Syncher worked on all three, fortunately. I threw a Pokéball at the last one because turns out I had just 12 Ultra Balls (I thought I had hundreds >_>) and didn't want to waste any one a Rivalry one.

Will be checking IVs tomorrow.
