Smogcast?

GB_Packers_Ftw

LOOKS LIKE FAVRE GOT SHUT DOWN
After realizing this is a newer sub-forum im going to try to re-arrange this...

Idea- a "Smog"cast
A podcast\talk radio show talking about smogon as a whole. Topics ranging from the suspect latter to statistics to community news could be included in each episode. Depending on what technology is used we could run it like a talk radio show and perhaps have a section where smogoners could actually call in and express their thoughts or bring up a new idea.

How does it benefit Smogon?
Well quite simply it makes for another way for Smogoners to gather up and talk about the things they love the most. Smogon and Pokemon. If we put it on itunes imagine all the people that search for "Pokemon". They would see our podcast and eventually be lead to our site. It can show newer members how we run our community and they could of course learn from the experts in an exciting, different, abstract way.

It may have been discussed, thought of, or asked for before but I think this would be an excellent idea. I think having a smogon podcast online and especially on itunes could broaden the roots of smogon to go even wider than they already are. Podcasts offer a new approach to learning about competative Pokemon. This approach could hook people to stay around smogon longer, Pokemon longer, and ultimately become good members of our excellent community. Perhaps we could find a way to tie it to the magazine? Im certainly not in a position to offer details about how to run a podcast since i really don't know but i do know that blogtalkradio.com offers free hosting and that might be a good place to start if indeed you would adopt this idea. thanks for reading and hopefully this can work out

I completely agree with this, as long as the video is of very high quality. I don't want to see Youtube junk on my IPod! But using podcasts for tutorials is a great idea. I would definitely be willing to do a few voicing parts or examples. RNGing can be difficult to understand without good video tutorials.

All in favour of this.

For this to work, however, you would need ~2-3 people in the same place to discuss this stuff (maybe, not sure how it works exactly but from my experience, the people have been in one place.) Group podcasts are always better imo then when you have just one person talk. If this were to happen though, It would be really successful. Hell, I'd subscribe!

Regardless, I'd love to work on this if given the opportunity to do so!

Not necesarily. To podcast you just need a group of people with a mic and Skype, and one person needs to have recording software and editing software. Its not really that hard to make a podcast at all in fact, believe me, I've helped on one.

I've been thinking about something like this for a couple months, and I think it's a wonderful idea. I personally envision this as something primarily "fun," so people who are less serious about the community can have something to get excited about and hopefully become contributors in the future. To center it entirely around competitive Pokemon wouldn't seem ideal to me, but either way this is definitely something I'd like to see happen.

Yeah i didnt really mean a video or anything. Im a commish in a madden league and we do a call in talk radio show (basicly a podcast where you can call in i geuss) off of blogtalkradio.com I have a mic and anyone with a mic could call in for free or you could call in with a call in number but that will have long distance...Yeah but it'd definately something that i think would be pretty cool. If you want mroe details on how to i geuss i could try and ask some of the guys that i know who do it but otherwise you guys could go and check it out for yourselves

I would be willing to help out with a podcast given the chance to! Considering that it could be less serious it would be an easy way for us to introduce newer pokemon players to the world of competitive battling, and which would expand our user group.

I would subscribe to this and contribute if I could. Just voicing my support to this idea and would definitely want this to be fun rather than straight competitive pokemon or something. Or perhaps two? One with the boring stuff we can just read and another one that has some of our more witty users? I dunno.

Pokebeach.com has one targeted towards the TCG that I subscribe to, but they only come around once in a blue moon and are usually stuff that I already know from reading through the forums, etc so this would probably need to be relatively frequent as well as somewhat recent news/topics.

good idea

I like this idea

However

How many podcasts could you conciviable do that are all original and well thought out? Especially when this overlaps with some of the goals of The Smog, I'm not honestly sure there is enough information

But prove me wrong. I wouldn't mind listening to my favorite Poke-heads jabber about UU debates at all :)

(pss SoT, we can still do our idea maybe too)

I don't think it even matters if there is overlap, simply because it's printed in a different format. You can't put The Smog on an iPod.

Anyhow I would very much like to help with this, in any way I can.

It's a decent idea, I just question how feasible it is. I feel like this is a project that everyone will get excited about and it'll just fall apart in the end.

Hmm, IMO it could work but I think it'd be a little hard to pull off. Though, if we find a way to do it then I'm definetely in favor of it.

A podcast is meant to be much more informal than the current Smogon website and web magazine. There shouldn't be much overlap at all as far as approach goes.

i think this is a great idea and i belive its very possible as if you get a handful of people willing to record/edit (i can record but not edit) im sure alot of the player base and consistant posters (including myself to a point) would be willing to contribute and it would only have to be idk 20 min of each a week or something like that ( obvously have to be seen how much material can be put togeather) of play time and im sure many players would be intrested in how some people think in the world of pokemon and current trends on shody ect

It doesnt have to be an hour long either. a Half an hour is plenty long for a few call ins jokes and pokemon chat. Weekly perhaps. And for the overlap like Chris said its completely different when its on a podcast. I think everyone will get excited about this, and quite frankly ik I am but its really not that hard to make a podcast. We could share hosting so we could have a fresh new voice to listen to each week..(or whatever) and if we did a call in show...imagine all the people we could get to call in. It could be used for basis of reviewing the week in the forums..Perhaps an epic Trou thread or a new tournament is starting...News in the suspect...etc. the possibilites seem to be endless. The only thing i think we should be careful of is over doing it. 1 30 minute show a week is plausible i think.

Well, we've done projects with more potential for that than a podcast (The Smog) successfully. All you need for a Pokémon podcast is an outline for each episode and 4 or 5 guys willing to just talk and rant about stuff. Setting up everything else is pretty easy.

If we want more structured, single person shows, then it's really just a matter of writing an outline and talking. It's surprisingly easy to make a podcast.

Also I want OBI TELLING JOKES. Yes.

I really don't want to see this go down as just an idea. How can we make our first move? Would anyone be willing to host? All you need to do is make an account at blogtalkradio.com and at least 1 person has to call in using a phone so if someone has like free nights and weekends...that would be free and then everyone else like co-hosts or call-ins can just use a mic. everything is free and easy.

Alright, I can take charge on making a demo / pilot episode to present to the admins and whatnot, right? (Any admin can just delete this if this isn't ok, it's completely unofficial and only for the purposes of seeing how feasible the idea is)

Anyone who wants to participate and plan a demonstration show should totally PM me or join my IRC channel. We can just do a roundtable discussion of Pokémon in Stark to see how it goes, or we can analyze a Pokémon, or something. Basically, volunteer to help make a sample episode with me and I'll be your best friend.

I wanna have something recorded by Sunday night. We should set up a time to meet in IRC tonight or Saturday to discuss this. Tentatively, meet at, say, 2 PM CDT Saturday in #ctp and we'll talk. -- if this time doesn't work PM me and I'll reschedule

This would be great, i have an iphone and if you could make it compatible ith that it would be so great.

Plus with advertising this could boost smogon's popularity enourmously, theyre are so many tecky nerds that would be drawn to smogon with something as simple as this.

If we do this weekly, would it be plausible to focus in on one sub-forum a week? I'm talking do Socialization week 1, Competetive week 2, Pokemon week 3, and Cryonics / Sites and Projects the last week.

It would then be easier to grab some of the guys from these subforums to talk about the stuff they're already posting about. It seems more plausible than (no offense) listening to Jump talk about the latest Firebot thread.

Not a fan of Podcasts with Skype, there's just something "more" if two hosts are actually there bouncing off each other

This is definitely not happening. No support from anyone on this. Oh well.
