Symbols? I thought you got the starter for completing the pokedex in Emerald.

And I wanted to see 'em so I could fish the GTS for 'em.

Anyway, thanks a bunch. ^^

Well my friend said he got one once he got all the symbols, and it worked for me too, I got a todidile, so I think it's reliable information.xD

Does anyone know if in Platinum, the Giratina's IVs are fixed permanently if you defeat the one in distortion world and go catch the one in Turnback Cave later?

If it's anything like the runners, it SHOULD be a different set of IV's.

You can't access Turnback until you beat Cynthia, and as long as the runners (and Azelf/Uxie) haven't been caught & released, they're infinitely available (with different IV's and Natures) as long as you've gone through the Elite 4 and, where applicable, reactivated the events that triggered their appearance.

Why is the recommended ev spread for physical swampert 252 HP / 6 Atk / 252 Def? Shouldn't it have more attack than that considering it's the physical set? Even mixpert has some evs in spAtt...why doesn't this have any offensive ev's?

I'm hoping to make it so that my swampy can 2HKO the average Blissey with e/q but I don't want to change any evs until I know whether the "recommended" spread is important for whatever reason.

Do Roar and Whirlwind really bring out a random Pokémon? I've noticed that in most cases only Pokémon that the opponent has already used are brought out by these moves. Maybe it's just me...

I know how the RNG method works but i need my SID first, and i have no caught shinies that aren't chained etc, so i was wondering if i could trade someone a normal Pokémon and they could use a AR or something to find my SID? I know it's cheeky of me to ask but i'm desperate, thanks.

Ask for someone to check your SID in the Simple Questions/Simple Requests thread.

Yes, it's random.

Can I run WOW/Psychic/Focus Blast/Icy Wind on Gardevoir and drop the unaccurate Hypnosis? Gardevoir can really mess-up sweepers like that. Maybe even Icy Wind on the CM set?
If not, HP Ice?

Is their any reason to use power bracer, ect. versus Macho Brace?
Why take the time to get the whole set when Macho Brace works on all stats?

Instead of increasing the EVs by a maximum of 3 (because Macho Brace doubles), you get a guarentee of an increase of 4.

And, no it's not a bad idea not to use the Smogon sets. They are good, but some you make yourself can also be good. Sometimes you need to make a set that will go well with the rest of your team, and also, if the opponent tries to predict, they will often predict wrong. ;-)

Breeding beginnier questions

I want to breed pokemon the legit way - I read the amazing guide that is on this site, and I'm really excited to start my file and get going. I just got platinum today so I think I'll just use chimchar to get through the game.

I have a few questions though.

Say I want to start off breeding a prize Togekiss, I need a Togetic(female) and a male depending on what bred move I want on it right?

I have that down but this is where I get a bit shaky on. As I watch pokemon from these 2 pokemon, do I keep on replacing JUST the female pokemon with better IVs from baby pokemon? or both?

Also, for someone just starting off going through the game - should I catch abra's at the beginning and stock pile them so it'll be easier to catch pokemon of a nature easier that I want or should I wait until I beat the game to do it?

One last thing - anything from the breeding guide out dated? Any new tips or strats? Anything discovered?

Thanks a lot for reading this =)

With all respect due to this fine site, I would agree with the above poster for the following reason.

My 5th match at Nationals, my opponent was a fellow Smogoner. He opened with a set that is commonly suggested for doubles on this site. While not a bad set at all, I immediately knew what he was doing. However, because I made my own set up, that I really DOUBT would ever be suggested (it's not really THAT good, it was just a curveball I guess) He had no idea what I was going for and I mopped the floor with him. Using a set of my own creation is exactly what got me to worlds.

Smogon sets are all very good no doubt whatsoever, but sometimes it's also good to come up with something completely different even if people tell you it's a stupid idea or it won't work. Only you can decide that for yourself.

Lee, I won't post anything more about this. I hope this was more respectful:D

If the baby has better IVs than the mother OR father, then replace whichever as long as they still have whatever egg moves you want (if any)

Actually I had better luck with Ralts in Platinum on Rt. 208-209. They seemed to be more likely to appear. However, I just caught 2 then bred them like crazy to get all but 2 natures so far.

Thank you very much for the swift reply. Helps a lot =)

Oh BTW, egg moves are only passed down by the father, Level up moves for the lowest form of that pokemon are passed down when BOTH the mother AND father know them. I didn't mean to say you could replace the father with a baby and still get your egg moves :/ Sorry.

And obviously watch out because they'll go up tons of levels reeeeally quick and overwrite whatever egg/Level up moves you wanted to pass on 0.0

Ohh okay. I get it =) Thanks so much for the reply once again, a lot of this makes sense to me now. Breeding can sure take awhile huh..

Definitely, but if you do it the "Legit" way it can really pay off because people will trade some good stuff for it, not like if youAR it.

Depends on what you want, Accuracy or Power.

A real answer:
Nowadays, fire attacks from Specsmence are really only good against stuff like Scizor and Skarmory (over the other moves), and it OHKOes them anyway. While Fire Blast has the higher average power (120 * 0.85 > 95 * 1.00), I'd recommend Flamethrower to avoid the 15% miss chance because it still holds onto all of the vital OHKOes.

EDIT: Hmm, upon closer analysis, Celebi stands out as a factor.
Specs Modest 252 Salamence Fire Blast vs Neutral 252/0 Celebi: 95.54% - 112.38%
Specs Modest 252 Salamence Flamethrower vs Neutral 252/0 Celebi: 75.99% - 89.36%

I know OU is based on usage, but with the new tier list coming up, I was just wondering...

Where's the cutoff point between OU and UU? I've heard its something along the lines of "if it's used in at least one in twenty battles on average in Standard, its OU".

I just wanted to be sure about that.
