Lil. Wayne

For the hip-hop fans out there, I need your honest, unbiased opinion. Do you guys think that Lil. Wayne is as overrated as everyone says he is? Personally i've been bashing him, his music, his label, and accompanying artists; but i've never really given him a chance really. Usually from what i've heard of him off the radio, what I hear isn't all that great, mediocre at best. But apparently if he has this much clout in the rap game then obviously he must be good right? Well I need you guys to fill in that blank for me. Should I dig a bit deeper and try some of his music?

I'm also kind of curious as to whether he actually has any talent in the hip-hop genre (not the rock genre though since I've heard some of his stuff and it is among the worst I've ever heard). At this current moment I'm not a huge fan of his style but might be willing to give him a chance if his non-radio stuff is better.

He's definetly overrated. He's an alright rapper, there are some songs of his that are actually pretty good but overall most of his songs are mediorce - terrible. I really don't get how he, or Drake for that matter are so popular (I'll wait till Drake drops an album before I judge him though)

Lil Wayne is bleh!, Like Aura said. Some of his songs are cool. But more than half are wak as hell. People sure enjoy using his lyrics and posting them on Myspace though. <_<

Pretty much this I feel Lil Wayne is one of the most overrated musicians in years in any given genre. He has some good stuff which are among his old stuff and anything else he has put out is from mediocre to garbage such as Lollipop or Prom Queen.

How could you hate him? His voice gets frantic at times but his lyrics is no joke. His songs are just raw..!

Overrated. Without a question.

Most people listen to it because of the beats and the high uptempo music for dances. Other than that, they have no idea what rap is all about.

Lil Wayne's Da Drought 3 is the only rap album I've liked, so he must be doing something right, right?

I have to agree, he is definitely overrated. To be honest, there aren't many solo songs by Lil Wayne that I actually like, and when I do, it's only for the beat. He has a couple decent guest appearances, like in Jay Sean's Down and Rudolf's Let It Rock, but on his own he is just average. His voice brings him down, but his lyrics can be decent at times.

I see, good opinions so far. Anyone else, also @Aura, I agree about waiting for Drake to drop an album, but from what i've heard so far it's up in the air for me.

Actually, the only thing I like about him is his voice, and it's relative uniqueness makes him a good guest artist. He's also a very good live performer if you ask me (saw him at the rose garden).

Other then that there's not much good about his music.

He has a handful of decent songs but as far as being a great rapper, he just isn't.

I don't see how people can place him above the likes of Jay-Z, Nas, Eminem, etc.

The main turn off for me is the fact that his voice is so annoying and this is only amplified by his unnecessary use of auto-tune in every song. It makes him sound worse imo.

the best part about lil wayne is that i get the very strong sense that all his music videos are inside jokes. between the over the top ironic parody of rap music videos, the ridiculous moments in them(riding in a firetruck then jumping off it while carrying a pink purse in 'fireman', for example) are just too much. his incessant auto-tuning lately only reinforces this. unless he's just that insane which would also make it awesome. dude probably has the most entertaining music videos of anyone.

musically he's pretty good. lyrical CONTENT might not be great but he's got a good flow and his music is usually well produced. of course he's overrated but i love the guy. hilarious.

God hit the nail, his inside jokes in his raps is what makes him unique. Further, Lil Wayne has good flow and concept on his songs unlike other rappers. If you want an example check out Dr. Carter from his album. His mainstream songs (ones on music videos) are extremely mediocre compared to the ones people are not familiar with.

I listened to a couple of his songs, such as Dr. Carter. Horrible. I have to say his voice gets on my nerves, his flow just seems whack, and the lyrics are something I could make. Seriously, overrated doesn't fit him. He's not worth listening to in my opinion. Name some songs if you want to change my mind.

His flow is off the fucking wall, and his lyrical work is typically very, very good. Especially when compared to those he's surrounded by. I used to loathe Wayne, then I gave him a fair trial, and I was impressed...

idk...

Sadly the state of the radio these days is quite sad. Indeed (and with rap albums especially) the true gems are generally not released as singles. I myself am not a fan of Lil Wayne's voice, but he has undeniable flow and talent. He's definitely one of the best true rappers in the game today.

Lil' Wayne's songs may not be deep or meaningful, but i have to admit, sometimes his lyrics are just so ridiculous that i can't help but smile. He also has outstanding flow which, imo, evens out the fact that his voice is difficult to listen to. And maybe some of his production could be better, but i think that he deserves all the attention he's been getting by the mainstream media.

I do like how ridiculous they get.

Right after Tha Carter II, Lil Wayne was great. A lot of good mixtapes came out and were very well ryhmes I must say. But once Tha Carter III Came out, He just started to suck ass imo.

I wouldnt even consider him Hip-hop he's just straight rap.

I dont think he's that bad at all, none of his songs are garbage at all, its just that he has his own style.

I dont think people give him enough credit.

Agreed, he has some cool stuff, but i remember listening to that super hyped Carter III and out of all the songs, I found near 5 or 6 that were good. He definitely has good stuff, but I think itll be a very long while before he really deserves the credit hes getting, or maybe even not.
