iPod...or a Zune?

So, I decided to purchase a media player, because as it turns out, one of my my cellphone earbuds, though reliable, decided to quit on me, and I could only hear my music through one loyal bud.

I was considering an iPod, but my friend recommended a Zune for my listening needs. So I did a little research, and I found that the Zune had some qualities that surpassed the iPod. And yet the iPod is still "the best", like Mewtwo in DP. I'm threading because some of the articles I read were just flames from iPod or Zune fanboys.

So be honest guys. When at the end of October, what should I buy? And don't tell me to buy another set of earbuds for my phone. Give reasons to buy a Zune or an iPod.

I've never bought a Zune, but seriously the amount of support and features an iPod has (any variant, although I have a Touch so I'm slightly biased) receives means that it should be an easy choice, barring a ridiculous difference in cost.

Ipod touch : Lots of multimedia apps.

If you're looking for quality of music, as I always do, I would go with a Cowon. Excellent piece of technology, and it's from Korea! :P

Oh and good headphones are essential for good quality. Don't get skull candy. That's all I'll say :P

iTouch, my friend has one and I am SOOO jealous. You can do ANYTHING on that thing.
YouTube, Internet, cool cames *PapiJump* and an App for pretty much anything.

I've had both an iPod and a Zune, and I must say that for compatibility and putting stuff on, the Zune is a LOT better, but the iPod is not only more fun, but easier to actually use. It really depends on what you want, but in my humble opinion, both are extremely overrated; the iPod has brand power and the Touch Wheel, and the Zune has brand power and the support of iPod haters and people who want something new.
In my experience, the best MP3 player I have ever bought was the Samsung YP-K3, which is relatively unknown. It has better compatibility than both the Zune and iPod, plays music just as well, looks better than both, and has a cheaper price tag. Unfortunately, it has nowhere near the functions of the Zune or iPod, being unable to play games and the like. The newer versions can play videos and stuff, so if you're just looking for a good, reliable music player, you definitely have to check out teh Samsung line of MP3 players.

What's wrong with skull candy?

I've owned a Zune 80 gb for almost two years, I like it.Has a pretty good interface, nice size screen, and is compatible with my 360.

I've also held my friends' Ipod classic and nano and they too are nice.

Really it's what your looking for in your multimedia player that decides which is better for you personally.

Incidentally, if you guys recommend either mp3 payers or others, can you describe their battery life? MY phone plays music, for like, a damn 3 hours before dying :P.

@Lord Blood, it looks awesome. Does it have repeat?

My Samsung lasted 20-25 hours depending on how loud I listened to it.

Fuck the iPod and the Zune, Sansa's making this shit happen.

This is the same exact one I have:
(picture)

I, too, have one of these. Although they are absofuckinglutely great, they lack third party support, which kills the brand. However, if they did, they would kick Apple's ass.

the ipod touch is by far the best mp3 player available on the market, anyone who tells you otherwise is a whiny middle-aged man who is too poor to buy one
EDIT: but yeah it is unfairly priced

What's wrong with skull candy?

The fact that you can get a sennheiser at the right place for the same relative price as a skull candy ear buds. Sennheiser, while there may be better brands (I think Sennheiser fits me personally, with sound quality), beats skull candy in terms of sound quality any day.

Apple products are the Ugg boots of the tech world. I have a Zune HD 32, and it's excellent.

It basically comes down to this: if you want to play crappy games and find a sushi restaurant, get the iPod. If you want to watch videos that don't look like crap and listen to music, get the Zune.

The movies on the Itouch are not horrible. They have decent quality (from watching FF7 advent children on it), and the ability to go on youtube and download youtube videos, and having fb, yahoo/msn/aim chat, and even more, makes up for the fact that it has in fact a lower sound quality.

You obviously haven't used a Zune HD, then. :)

I never said compared to a Zune HD. I know that the video quality for the Zune HD is amazing. However, for an ipod touch, with all that shit crammed in there, it's still amazing that the itouch CAN play at its quality.

If you want the best, Ipod Touch is the way to go, the can do so much shit it's amazing, people will tell about to other secondary stuff, but I say if you can afford it, Touch is the way to go, can the Zune play SNES (technically the touch can't, without a little knowledge). I bought mine a few months ago, and it puts all my friends 2nd market MP3 players to shame.

Zune is the poor mans alternative there is almost no reason to go for that over an Ipod, unless you really just don't need all the extra bloatware Ipod Touch's come with (Stocks, etc, but once again with a little knowledge those can easily be removed.

The zune, in my opinion, offers a bit more, but I chose ipod over it. The reasoning behind it was fairly basic, the ipod came out first and really is dominating the market. At first, I chose windows media player over itunes (before my ipod/zune struggle) and was burned when urge (window's media player's song purchasing service) went under. I lost all the music I bought through it and I was upset. My fear is if this happens with the zune. Will microsoft still support it? No. Ipod's going to be around for quite some time as I can tell. The interface is, in my opinion, easier to use and pick up.

The Zune's more expensive if you count the subscription that you need. The iPod is the passe one.

I'm jumping on the "alternative" bandwagon. Up here in Canada at my Best Buy, we have some Sony MP3 players that basically do what an Ipod Nano does at $30 less. I'm going to assume you're resourceful and would look online and at other outlets for a better deal than $129 (CDN), but really I hate both media players and think that if you want something that will just play your music, you should get the Samsung one mentioned above, or another big-name brand that isn't overpriced.

If you're not getting an iPod Touch, that means the App Store doesn't matter. In that case, I'd prefer the Zune. Especially if you want legal music as the Zune Pass is an amazing invention.

...but what if you prefer legal music that you own? I know I don't buy a CD every month (which is the price of a zune pass), but with my library well over 3000 legal songs, I wouldn't want that taken away just because I didn't want to buy a CD that month.
