iPod...or a Zune?

i agree with the post about the durability of zunes. i bought mine from a friend and it's the first generation 30gig version. it's nicked around the corners from various drops but it still works well.

zune software is strange. it's unique in that with the zune social, you get to keep track of your plays and get badges for playing an artist or album a certain number of times. and you can display them and other profile things through your own "zune card". this is pretty cool for people that are serious about listening to music...but it's way inferior to stuff like last.fm. the programming for the social is pretty terrible, the software will often miss songs that you've played on your device (although this has recently improved). you cannot delete plays that you do not want, unlike last.fm. and recently i'm having a problem where i'm getting a TON of music logged that i have never even heard of. it's kind of irritating because i take pride in getting a badge and keeping track of my music tastes, only to get a ton of bogus badges that i never earned...

the devices themselves are fantastic though. i've never had much trouble getting the software to read the songs on my computer. if you only care about having a good device that plays music (and videos) well, then zune will satisfy your needs imo. and the zune pass is pretty great.

I just got a Zune HD today, and I have had and iPod Touch and an original Zune for a while, so once I get more time with the Zune HD I'll let you know which one I like better.

The new Zune software though is really nice, and definitely better than iTunes

Still trying to decide if I want a Zune 120 GB or Zune HD. The thing with the HD is that it's expensive and I don't feel like buying a case for it. I probably wouldn't have enough money to buy nice headphones either. But... it's new and sexy and games are coming out for it.

I have a strong inclination that the larger capacities Zunes are going to be phased out in the near future. Not even Best Buy lists the Zune120 anymore. My personal recommendation is if you really desire a Zune, the Zune HD is the only way to go. Otherwise, if you want a high end media player, iPod Touch all the way. Access to Apple's ever growing App Store, which by the way just broke 100,000 applications, 3.5 inch screen, easy to use interface, first-class web browser. I can go on and on.

Or, if you are a music junkie and desire want to carry your whole music library with you, I recommend the iPod Classic. 160 GBs of storage, besting the Zune120 in terms of storage. Plus, you get better battery life and access to iTtunes extensive media library. Also applies to the iPod Touch, obviously.

I have a 2 GB Creative Zen which I bought some years back, nothing wrong with the creative series and less expensive than Ipod's and Zunes.

I was planning on planning a Zune HD in the future but it's pricing is too steap at the moment.

I recently bought a cheap mp3 player after losing my iPod touch and I have to say that I should have just gone with another iPod. iTunes and the actual iPod's interface is so easy to use and dependable. don't go with one just because of the price unless that's a problem, because in the long run iPod wins imo

having never owned a Zune, i confess a lack of knowledge of them.
however, from a market point of view, more and more things are coming out for the IPhone/Ipod, including a variety of Games, Audio-books, and music exclusives (although that is a rarity). there is more market support for the Ipod, therefore i suggest that.

I would say go for the ipod. The only thing is what do you want to use it for? If you want a lot of room for music get the ipod classic because it has 160GB, if you would like to use it for sports get the nano because it has a flash drive, or if you want apps get the touch which also has a flash drive and come in 8, 32, and 64 GB's. Hope I helped.:toast:

I just have to say that just this fall, the college I go to gave out a laptop and printer and a Zune to all the incoming freshman. I still have yet to do anything with that Zune. I opened it up, tried out the software, but it just doesn't appeal to me that it won't save whatever music I download unless I pay for it every month. Needless to say, that Zune resides in a desk drawer and I still prefer an iPod over it.

You're not doing it right then. I didn't use any kind of mod/hack or anything and all my downloaded stuff works fine. Did you use the CD it came with? Try downloading it off their site if you lost it.

I don't use a Zune or an iPod. I have a Walkman!
It's cheaper and I think it's just as good, but a lot of people frown upon it just for not being popular

I don't care for either of them, they both have the same purpose in life, there's no reason to criticize them on their differences, as long as they do the job well. But that is just my opinion.

I've used my DSi ever since my iPod got stolen (almost a year now). I bought a 32 GB SD card for it and just moved all my music onto that. The only downside to it is that you can't listen to music and play DS games at the same time, but honestly, given the chance I wouldn't go back. I'm probably one of the few people in the world that uses their DSi more as an mp3 player than a handheld game.

I use a 2 GB iPod Nano, I would rather get something with much more space but I don't have the cash handy, and there's other stuff I want more. The only reason I got it in the first place was because my dad exchanges pet care (he's a vet) for new releases of items if the person works at an electronics store sometimes, so I got it for free.

I just would like to post that I've used a Zune firsthand, trying to set up this kid that I babysit with his birthday present (got paid a little too). The software kind of sucked, but the Zune itself was solid. As a media player, it's as good as you need.

But god, I wish my ipod and the zune used the standard file transfer system.
