Venonat (Analysis)

Venonat
[Overview]

Venonat is a Bug- and Poison-type Pokemon that has an excellent movepool, allowing it to Baton Pass with the help of its ability and its status inflicting moves, namely Sleep Powder and Stun Spore. It also has access Toxic Spikes. It has a mode of recovery, but it's not completely reliable, as Sand is very common. While Venonat does not have the greatest stats, its movepool definitely makes up for it.

[SET]
name: Baton Passer
move 1: Agility
move 2: Baton Pass
move 3: Sleep Powder
move 4: Signal Beam / Psychic
item: Eviolite / Focus Sash
ability: Compoundeyes
nature: Timid
evs: 196 HP / 36 Def / 36 SpA / 236 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set takes advantage of Venonat's excellent movepool and its ability Compoundeyes. The main goal of this set is to put your opponent to sleep, set up an Agility, and pass it on to a slower sweeper. Signal Beam is the STAB of choice thanks to its confusion chance, making Baton Passing easier. Since Fighting-type Pokemon are common in the metagame, and Venonat 4x resists their STAB moves, it can find many opportunities to switch in, cripple them with Sleep Powder, and begin boosting with Agility. As for your item of choice, it mostly comes down to your playstyle. If you plan on setting up just one Agility and passing it on, Focus Sash is the better option. If you plan on setting up more than one Agility, Evolite is the better option since it increases Venonat's defenses.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Venonat can run Stun Spore over Signal Beam, allowing it to cripple more than one Pokemon, but Signal Beam also has a chance to confuse your opponent, so it comes down to preference. As for teammates, Venonat helps hard- hitting slow Pokemon such as Litwick, Cranidos, Cubone, and Aron. Evolite Bronzor with Heatproof is probably the best teammate Venonat can have, as it covers all of its weaknesses, except those to Fire-type moves, to which it is neutral.

[SET]
name: Substitute + Disable
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Disable
move 3: Morning Sun
move 4: Signal Beam
item: Eviolite
ability: Tinted Lens
nature: Bold
evs: 36 HP / 116 Def / 116 SpA / 156 SpD / 76 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Substitute + Disable is a great combination for Venonat, as it can Substitute on the first turn to let the Substitute take damage and proceed to Disable the opponent's attack, preventing it from hitting Venonat for super effective damage. If you plan on using Substitute + Sleep Powder or Disable + Sleep Powder, Venonat becomes the perfect setup bait for Scraggy due to sleep clause. Mienfoo can cause problems for Venonat, as it can keep using U-turn to stall out your Morning Sun PP and eventually KO Venonat. Signal Beam isn't the strongest move, but it has a chance to confuse the opponent, which can be quite helpful. Tinted Lens makes Signal Beam better, improving its coverage, and Morning Sun recovers 1/2 of Venonat's maximum health when used in normal weather conditions.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Venonat 4x resists one of the most common types: Fighting. Heatproof Bronzor is the best teammate for this set, as it resits all of Venonat's weaknesses and deals well with opposing Pokemon with which Venonat has trouble such as Taillow. This set works well with entry hazard support, particularly Stealth Rock and Toxic Spikes.

[Other Options]

Bug Buzz can be used over Signal Beam for more power, but Venonat doesn't have the best Special Attack stat, and Signal beam's 10% confusion chance is more important than the slight increase in power. In the Baton Pass set, Stun Spore and Morning Sun can be used over Signal Beam. As for the defensive set, Toxic Spikes is a good option, as Venonat has the ability to set them up and absorb them for stall-oriented teams. However, Toxic Spikes and Morning Sun is a illegal combination.

[Checks and Counters]

Pokemon immune to sleep, such as Shuppet and Mankey, can pose a threat, freely switching into Sleep Powder and taking little from a resisted Signal Beam, but they must watch out for Stun Spore. Priority can also be a problem, namely from Fake Out Mienfoo; in this scenario, Bronzor is a prime, if not the best, teammate for Venonat. Taunt users completely shut down Venonat if it's not carrying an attacking move. Hard hitting Flying- and Fire- type Pokemon, such as Tailow and Litwick, OHKO Venonat with Brave Bird and Fire Blast respectively. Phazers, such as Hippopotas can Roar Venonat out while it is setting up Agility, making its effort useless.

[Dream World]

Venonat gets Run Away as its Dream World ability, which has no in-battle effect and should never be used in a battle.

I'm not entirely sold on the second set because Choice Scarf isn't as great as it used to be and Venonat has only base 40 Special Attack, which is very, very low.

No mention of morning sun on the first set?

Or Stun Spore?

I will mention Stun Spore over Sludge Bomb on the first set because of Sleep Clause.
Should I also give morning Sun a slash over Sludge Bomb?

Sludge bomb should still be the first option so it doesn't get completely fucked by Taunt.

It should be: Sludge Bomb / Stun Spore / Morning Sun in the last slot

Sorry if you already know this but just make sure to expand your analysis. I've been told this a lot, so i should know. :P

Rejecting the Choice Scarf set, Venonat has an awful Special Attack stat, and almost no EVs and Eviolite, it just isn't strong enough. Also, being Stealth Rock weak doesn't help either.

The Baton Pass looks pretty mediocre, it's a shame that it doesn't get Quiver Dance, but whatever. Also you've listed Sleep Powder twice, remove the one in the last slot and replace it with Psychic.

To me it seems like you aren't sure what Venonat can do, so you just started with the old gen 4 stuff, but it isn't relevent here imo. Think about what Venonat has:

 • Compoundeyes + Sleep Powder (Stun Spore too)
 • A 4x resistance to Fighting-type attacks and a 2x resistance to Dark-type attacks
 • Toxic Spikes, and the ability to absorb them
 • Morning Sun for recovery
I really think a Defensive set should be tested. Because of Venonat's restances, it could make a useful switch-in to the likes of Timburr, Scraggy, and Mienfoo (just theorymoning). It has compoundeyes Sleep Powder and Psychic, which could help it beat them, and the ability to set up Toxic Spikes, too. I'll try it out and let you know.

Adding on to what Moo said, I think the first set should look like this.

[SET]
name: Baton Passer
move 1: Agility
move 2: Baton Pass
move 3: Sleep Powder
move 4: Signal Beam / Psychic
item: Evolite / Focus Sash
ability: Compoundeyes
nature: Timid
evs: 196 HP / 36 Def / 36 SpA / 236 Spe

Signal Beam is just STAB with the chance of confusion, which could be helpful for Baton Passing. Psychic isn't doing terribly much anyway, since Venonat would usually rather be passing than attacking. However, Mienfoo is probably the most common and annoying in the tier, so hitting it for 10/21 while 4x resisting Fighting is a good enough reason to use it, just in case the thing you're passing to can't really take a Hi Jump Kick.

Focus Sash vs. Eviolite basically comes down to your team and playstyle its playstyle. Focus Sash lets you survive everything (even Dwebble's Rock Blast some of the time), Sleep Powder, then Agility + Baton Passl, but you're almost required to use a Rapid Spinner. While Eviolite is definitely better when you can't afford to run a Rapid Spinner, or plan to attempt more than one set up and Baton Pass.

I also reject the Choice Scarf set and most likely any future offensive sets, because of Venonat's poor coverage and low low offensive stats.

Regarding the defensive set, EM made a great one during the research week thread:

Venonat @ Eviolite
Ability: Tinted Lens
EVs: 36 HP / 116 Def / 116 SpA / 156 SpD / 76 Spe
Bold Nature
- Substitute
- Disable
- Morning Sun
- Signal Beam

Substitute Disable is probably the best route to go, since if you go with just Sleep Powder + Sub or Disable, Venonat could become set up bait for Scraggy, after Sleep Clause, and Mienfoo could easily shuffle around Venonat with U-Turn to waste Morning Sun PP.

@Moo: Your right I didn't know where to start of. I have added the bullet points, and I have taken out the Scarf set. I'll add the defensive set posted by EM in a few.

@Al Alchemist I have removed everything and added everything in your post, again, I'll add the defensive set soon.

Thanks a lot guys.
EDIT: Added

You should also include some sort of set for setting up TSpikes. Morning Sun can't be used in conjunction with Toxic Spikes because its an illegal egg move combination, but some set like Sleep Powder/Tspikes/filler/filler could still probably be used successfully.

As far as defensive sets go, Sleep Powder/Stun Spore/Morning Sun/attack also works very effectively. You should probably run Compoundeyes on a set like that, which is a shame because Tinted Lens is really cool. Anyways, mention in the Sub/Disable set that entry hazards are a big help, especially because a lot of the things that will switch into Venonat are weak to SR (Houndour, Taillow, etc).

I think Double Powder is worth looking into, too, and should at the very least have an Other Options mention

I've always though that Venipede outclasses Venonat at the job of setting up Toxic Spikes, and therefore haven't mentioned it.
If I'm wrong I'll try it out and see how it works.

I think Double Powder is worth looking into, too, and should at the very least have an Other Options mention
Added to OO.

Venipede doesn't get Compoundeyes Sleep Powder either, so it's probably worth trying.

[SET COMMENTS]

SubDisable is the best combo for Venonat, as it can Substitute on the first turn to let the Substitute to take damage, and then proceed to Disable the opponent's attack. Signal Beam isn't the strongest move, but it has a chance to confuse the opponent, you which can be quite helpful. Tinted Lens makes Signal Beam better, improving its coverage, and Morning Sun recovers 1/2 of your Venonat's maximum health when used in normal weather conditions.

[This sounds like what AC should be imo. Can you explain more strategy with the actual set?]

[it's actually illegal with Morning Sun ;_; mention this]

[Checks and Counters]

Pokemon immune to sleep, such as Shuppet and Mankey, can pose a threat, freely switching into Sleep Powder and taking little from a resisted Signal Beam, but must watch out for Stun Spore. Priority can also be a problem, namely Fake Out Mienfoo; in (for this scenario, Bronzor is a very good prime, if not the best, teammate for Venonat. Taunt users completely shut down Venonat if it's not carrying an attacking move. Hard hitting Flying- and Fire- type Pokemon, such as Tailow and Litwick, OHKO's Venonat with their STAB move Brave Bird and Fire Blast, respectively. Phazers, like such as Hippopotas, can Roar Venonat out while your it is setting up Agility, making them its effort useless.

[Dream World]

Venonat gets Run Away as its Dream World ability, which has no in-battle effect and should therefore never be used in a battle.
