Stuff that's wrong with D/P

Is anyone else accidentally switching gears on their bike? Since switching gears is the same button as run, I find myself instinctively holding the B button after every battle and ending up with a slow bike. God, that is fucking annoying. And before you have the chance to change it back, you're in another random battle. And then you forget what just happened and do it all over again.

Oh and the completely useless Poketch apps are annoying, too. There are only like five useful ones - the marker map, digital clock, dousing machine, counter and happiness checker - and that leaves 20 crap apps (crapps?) you have to sort through. When am I ever going to need to toss a coin or play roulette?

You are so very much not alone on this. Old habits die hard, and I can not count the number of times I end up with the slow assed bike.

I know it's been said a lot, but serioulsy, the surf speed is quite pants.

The only thing that really annoys me is the encounter rate. You know how the bike takes a few steps to get to full speed? When I'm in a cave or grass I can never walk long enough for that. And everything that you ever see ever are Zubats and Geodudes or whatever. Why the fuck are there so many Geodudes outside of caves? It's fucking ridiculous.

-most HMs still blow. Surf is good, Waterfall got new life with the physical/special split, Defog might see occassional use. Everything else still blows, and for reasons I'll never understand the shittiest HM moves are the ones that are most often required to progress through the game. While I appreciate being provided HM slave fodder early in the game, I'd prefer to be able to build my team around 6 Pokemon rather than 3-4 Pokemon + HM slaves. It's hard to believe that making Rock Smash, Cut, and Strength usable would hurt the game difficulty much when you're past the 6th or 7th gym and AI trainers are still using Wurmples.

-sections where you team up with a trainer are nifty, but are ruined when those trainers turn out to be shit-eating retards: see Marley and her Helping Hand spam Arcanine and your rival's fucking worthless Munchlax.

-they're still using "swarm" Pokemon. Suck.

-Mistranslations.

-The Poketech. Why couldn't this be a Pokenav 2.0 instead of my TI calculator from high school?

-coming from Emerald's huge battle frontier, the northeastern island is a bit disappointing. Having to grind BPs blows ass when you can't even play under different rulesets to break the repetition. I want a Battle Factory DS goddamnit.

-no random matching unless you buy PBR.

-would like to get more detailed info on Pokemon over GTS.

When am I ever going to need to toss a coin or play roulette?

The surfing's a bit slow, but to tell the truth there isn't that much water, so it's not too much of a big deal.

The encounter rate can get annoying if you don't have any repels, but that's what they're there for.

Seriously, chill the fuck out. It's a kid's game. It's not something worth getting angry over.

 I lost 2 Pokemon in the Rival battle before I got mad, switched in Torterra, and Earthquaked his Munchlax to death. We cleaned house pretty quickly after that.

What I wanted to see is them USING the huge number of Pokemon we have now. I mean, actually being required to fill the Pokedex for once is surprisingly cool, but why can't we actually encounter the 300-400 non legendary Pokemon we have now? Why is there a Geodude in every patch of grass? Why is there a Zubat in every single cave?

From what I've heard, you can actually catch nearly 400 Pokemon in either game.

I'm very disappointed that there wasn't diversity early on, though. With this amount of Pokemon, I really should have 3-4 flying types to choose from within the first 20 levels. Instead I have Starly. And.. Starly. Sure, he's good - but it's always nice to have options.

Actual fight clock times!

Here's my timing of a one-hit KO fight with intimidates using super-effective moves.

I tested this with my copy of Firered and Diamond. I was using Gyarados for both, intimidates, using STAB water moves to OHKO a low-level Geodude. I used the exact same Pokemon for both tests so they had the same cry length.

The Firered battle from the moment the screen flashes on the grass to when the grass reappears after the battle fades out...

19.5 seconds (average)

The Diamond battle in the same circumstances...

28 seconds (average)

It burns.

When needing to level up to 100, that 8.5 seconds comes out to alot too. Ouch! Burn indeed!

Too much negativity

Perhaps I'm the only one here who thinks this way, but the encounter rate and frustration involved in capturing legendaries seems about the same to me. I think that most players have simply forgotten how annoying it was to capture the likes of Groudon and Rayquaza from the 3rd generation (save for masterball) and how countless Zubat halted progression through caves. Most players have not caught a legendary in a while or randomly wandered through a cave for the sake of connecting between cities. Those who still play the GBA games usually fly around, buy repel (since money shouldn't be an issue after tons of hours clocked), and have already caught the legendaries a while ago.

I do agree that surfing is slow and that the battles take slightly longer, but the attitude here suggests that these things take an eternity. Remember, most RPGs have moments of slow distance progression filled with pointless encounters. So, let's not act so spoiled, ok?

Which is why its great that:

A) There's no reason to level up to 100 anymore

B) There's still steep hills so you can level two Pokemon to 100 in a couple days with nothing more than a nickle and a heavy book. :D

Steeps hills don't increase your step count anymore, so you can't do that. :/

While the GTS feature is great overall, the part I do not understand is that anybody can place a rather common weak pokemon and offer for a high-demand uber such as palkia & dialga. Would anyone fall for giving up a palkia for a L1 burmy? That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen.

Can't really blame the game for completely stupid players. I actually assume most of those are people with a single DS but two copies of the game trying to transfer their legendary across carts.

The Surf Speed is very annoying. It takes forever to go anywhere, the good news is as said before, there is not a lot of water to surf on, so it evens out.

The GTS is both great and horrible. You can get some great deals from there (I sent a Lv20 ponyta for a Lv 21 Monferno), but then it seems like everyone wants a Dialga or Palkia for anything (when I was looking for cherubi i could only find people looking for like Lv 60+ Dialga/Palkia).

I just wish they would make the HM moves useful. Example, make Rock Smash a 60 BP move that still lowers Defense, or DeFag replicate rapid spin, or some usefull purpose.

The only TRUE complaint I have is Surf's speed. I'm fine with the text speed, and the high encounter rate is actually something I like about the game.

Edit: Except when I see Zubat and Geodude a lot. Then it gets annoying.

protect/doubleteam/mudshot/somethingelse quagsire in the e4.

i second (or third, or fourth) surf going at walking speed. i was playing leafgreen today, and surf went at running speed. it was great.

the un-smoothness of the cursor when you're selecting a city to fly to. they let you go left right up and down, but it's not the same as rse :(

what do I hate.....

Surf speed
Fog
Mud
Rock Climb

I mean, why did they slow everything down- it's also very messed up in other parts as well- it seems like every trainer's pokes have slowed down a lot- as I think that I can count the number of pokes on 1 hand that my drifblim outran, no matter if it was Brave, and 5-6 levels lower, I love the thing- but it's frusterating me on how fast it is.

Fog is worse than needing flash, as at least flash didn't screw you up in battles. Also its so frusterating that you have to use Rock climb EVERY Time you go up a path. But the surfing is still slow

Dangit... new complaint... not being able to Pal Park Pokemon with HM's learned.

I had a Bold Feebas with Surf/Ice Beam/Light Screen/Splash and a Master Ball all ready to go... can somebody tell me where I can find the Move Deleter in FireRed and if he'll get rid of Surf for me?

EDIT: Thanks, Dan Dan

My complaints

- The GTS was very poorly done. WHO THE HELL HAS A LV 100 PIPLUP?

- The lack of customizeable organization in the Bag, combined with the fact that removed items go to the bottom instead of their original position.

- I seriously think Capture Rates were greatly reduced. This gen has some of the most effective Pokeballs ever, yet Azelf died of struggle quite a few times before I could catch it. It was easier catching lv 70 legends in RSE

- Not enough Boxes in the PC... There was more than there was in RSE, but that was only to compensate for more pokemon being available, I would have liked to see a few more boxes, so that I can have a box for stuff like my 21 dittos, and all my synchronize abras.

I agree with some tedium in the game... I am currently before the 3rd gym leader, so I'll post what I've noticed:

1) Battles do take longer, but it's negligible. Why can't I turn off Pokemon entering animations? Buneary takes like, 7 fucking seconds to do its animation. And some of them are just so stupid that I don't wanna see them.

2) Useless HMs. Again. Like, why would I ever, EVER, use Strength? I wouldn't. Return is so much better. Rock Climb is horrid as well, and Defog is a gimp Haze.

3) Some catch rates. Murkrow is a BITCH to catch. He's in the red, paralyzed, and it's at night, but it takes either 1 or 15 dusk balls to capture him. I don't understand why it's so RANDOM.

4) Pokeballs. Why can't we switch out Pokemon into different Pokeballs for a set price at a Pokemart or something? The seals are a nice idea, but I still wanted this option.

5) I actually have no problem with wild Pokemon encounters, and when I do I buy repels since, you know, that's what they're for. I never buy potions or revives until the E4, really, and this game has been no different. :B Money~

6) Why do I dismount my bike between routes? Why did they reimplement this? What the hell GF?

7) WHY DO WE NEED MORE USELESS POKEMON?! This gen introduced Evos to Pokemon that were freakin pathetic before, but then they counter it and add more Pokemon that are a piece of shit. Like more useless bug Pokemon.

I'll prolly have more peeves later.

8) Touch screens rule. Too bad I have to switch between using the stylus and the dpad and the buttons. Why can I access the start menu from the touch screen? Why can't I attach items to Pokemon using the stylus from the party screen? Did they not test this shit out?

the only things I really find wrong is the lack of certain moves or abilities on pokes:

-Why doesn't Voltorb/Electrode have the Detonate ability? much better than Soundproof for him and fits the dex entries.

-Metagross should get the Levitate ability. It's dex entry says it flies and Steven in Emerald used his to travel and fly all around Hoenn. Same with the Magnezone line (though I'm sure everyone will prefer Magnet Pull).

-Cradily wants Leech Seed and Knock Off

-Ludicolo wants Aqua Ring

-Entei and Flareon both want Flare Drive

-Flygon wants Dragon Dance

-Lucario wants a Fight-version of Pursuit
(It already is the best Fighting in the game in my opinion, plus Fighting types don't run after things, they do hand to hand combat, and most fighting things are slow)

-Suicune and Uxie want Recover

-Forretress wants a phazing move. . .perhaps Whirlwind? (hey if Drapion and Rampardos can get it so can he!)
Does Forretress have a mouth? How can it Roar or Whirlwind?

-Shuckle wants Seismic Toss
It can't put anything up, all it can do it roll, unless your thinking something like, he can grab a hold of something and seismic toss it out.

-Dusknoir wants T-Wave and Stealth Rocks

-Mantine wants Whirlwind and Stealth Rocks
it learns Haze, that's better then whirlwind, plus it's stats aren't that good.

-Walrein wants Ice Shard
Why?

-Hypno wants Wish (not just as NYPC), Baton Pass (not just XD), and Yawn
Why not just give hypno Nasty Plot while were at it.

-Wishcash wants Stealth Rocks, Thunder Wave, Recover, and Curse
it get's Rock Slide, I don't think it can Thunder Wave, or Recover. It should get Curse, then it might be broken.

- The GTS was very poorly done. WHO THE HELL HAS A LV 100 PIPLUP?

That's probably the point. Lots of people game the GTS for things like the Self Trade glitch or swapping with themselves (two cartridges, one DS). If you see a trade that seems impossible, that's almost certainly the point of it. Otherwise it's total stupidity on the part of the traders. Can't blame the game for that.

2) Useless HMs. Again. Like, why would I ever, EVER, use Strength? I wouldn't. Return is so much better. Rock Climb is horrid as well, and Defog is a gimp Haze.

I actually really like Strength in game. Certainly, its not a better move than Return, but its far less limited. When you get it, Strength is usually the best Normal type move you can put on a Physical attacker, and since you don't have the limits associated with TMs, you can throw it on anything you like instead of saving it for a competetive team.

The real, longstanding problem is that the game doesn't save which routes you've "cleared" with an HM. Once you've gotten through it in game you shouldn't need the move again so that it doesn't impede "endgame" players.

4) Pokeballs. Why can't we switch out Pokemon into different Pokeballs for a set price at a Pokemart or something? The seals are a nice idea, but I still wanted this option.

This would be a great feature. All my Pokemon are stuck in Pal balls or plain old Pokeballs because I breed them. Being able to set it up after the fact would make things like Luxury Balls and Premier Balls far more worthwhile, even if they significantly increased their price. Who raises "captured" Pokemon anyway?

6) Why do I dismount my bike between routes? Why did they reimplement this? What the hell GF?

I'd wager its a technical issue of some kind. Most likely a loading/streaming sort of thing. Though I certainly could be wrong there.

7) WHY DO WE NEED MORE USELESS POKEMON?! This gen introduced Evos to Pokemon that were freakin pathetic before, but then they counter it and add more Pokemon that are a piece of shit. Like more useless bug Pokemon.

Darwinism. Really useless Pokemon exist mostly for you to feed to your stronger Pokemon to help them level while they're weak. I also think they like to push the notion that this is some sort of real world, so that not every creature will eventually become some giant, unstoppable beast. I'm guessing that Gamefreak really doesn't expect people to use all of the monsters it creates. Some of them are simply designed to be NPC opponents but are still catchable just to maintain the spirit of the franchise.

8) Touch screens rule. Too bad I have to switch between using the stylus and the dpad and the buttons. Why can I access the start menu from the touch screen? Why can't I attach items to Pokemon using the stylus from the party screen? Did they not test this shit out?

It's designed around using your thumb, NOT the stylus. That's why most of the buttons line up around the left and right sides of the screen and are generally big and fat. In battle, the only button you have to move your hands away from the D-Pad XYAB buttons for is the run button, which is probably a concious design decision.

I assume that's the same reason the boxes don't use the touch screen well. The Pokemon sprites are a little too small to manipulate with your finger. I do find it terribly ironic that the cursor you control in the box screen IS a little finger though.
