Little sketch of my idea of nectura's prevo...
It's based on sundews (drosera)

Those are so adorable, Yilx. They're both cool, but I prefer the second one.

EDIT: Maybe you could try to fuse the two designs, I'd like to see how that'd turn out.

Hey there cat planet cat planet!
797c24711grjm.png

I tried to do as you folks suggested, I hope I did right. Made the girl less of the focus and more of just a wilted flower hanging off the vineponytail, made the eyes a bit more standoutful, and cleaned up the lineart.

Beedfack!
Ruckechoo777 - It's coming along, but I'll agree that your choice of distance may be a bit of a hindrance. My only real suggestion for now would be to pick a specific animal to use as a reference, because right now it's hard to tell if it's supposed to be a cat, dog, rodent, lizard, etc. You have a lot of flexibility to move in terms of the animal, so you've got some real nice creative potential available there.
Chornthild - I like where you're going with your design, no one's really exploring the actual plant side of its growth, so I'd say your design is quite a great point of view. I don't know what advice I can give, I'll probably offer some once I see your next incarnation of it.
Birkal - I like your design, and it's adorable. My only beef with it is where you put the detail. Your big thorny backbowwings are kind of becoming a bigger focal point than the face. I may suggest making bigger eyes like the other guys you see around here, that should at least help to remedy it.
CitterRat - I'm sorry I can't mess up your name without calling you a rat. Your design is pretty cute, however I will say that the similarities to an adult woman kind of seems like it's going the opposite way you want to. I love that bonnet and you should keep it forever because it's incredibly cute, but I'd suggest tweaking the anatomy to be more childlike.
Yilx - Those are so incredibly fucking adorable I love them and I want them forever. I'm not sure which I'd suggest, or if I'd suggest a fusion, but that ball one is also an awesome creative approach, instead of the standard humanoid designs. However, I think if you do choose the seed one, perhaps giving it a little bit of a leafy mini-dress or little nubby arms could make it closer to Necturna, because it kind of looks like there might be a middle evolution if you choose that one as-is.
Noobiness - I really love that whole sundew approach, however I feel the way you've done it is a bit distant from Necturna. The sundew pictures I saw on google kind of reminded me of the mouth of the flytrap, so maybe if you used the flower in that style it could look way past cooler.
MLaRF - The vine's head on top looks like it has a mustache.

Considering how humanshape Necturna is, I definitely think that the pre-evolution should look remotely humanshape as well. In saying that, I don't mean "have arms and legs and lalala" but rather that it should have a torso, a lower body, and a head such that it gives off the feel of a human. Think Ralts or Petilil, or something like that.

For that reason, I think Yilx's bottom-right design is far superior to the top-left one. Aragornbird's design is also very cool, and I like the body structure of Birkal's. Chuckeroo's is not something I'm a fan of, and personally, Mlarf's is focusing too much on a gigantic vine thing with a flower on the bottom and not enough on the main Pokemon which grows up into big ole' Necturna. I honestly think the design (Mlarf's) would be 10x improved if he removed the flower at the end of the vine entirely. Then it'd look very appropriate. That's my general feel about what has been presented thus far.

Here is an update of my design. I still have her looking like a maple seed pod. I've made her shorter and made her head larger and tried to make her a little cuter than how my prior design was going. (including a golden tuft of hair ment to represent her future leaf. other than that my overall theory on my design is the same. let me know that you think.

Edit: I forgot to add her end spike but now I'm unsure if it is the best option. I am putting them together so I can know which would be the one you guys think I should do a final product on.

Oh god so many adorable little terrors, this is marvellous

Aragornbird's is pretty much what I thought Miniturna would end up looking like, and it's been done extremely well. By which I mean, it's adorable. Quanyails's is also incredible, both in imagination and execution, and I like Yilx's humanoid one, though I am concerned that it may look a little too much like Necturna itself

but so long as it ends up adorable, I'm happy

and on that note

Didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped, but that's okay, because I prefer most of the other entries here anyway. Regardless, I tried to keep some of Necturna's design elements in here while also expanding the hair/vine/thing a little bit - I also coloured it a less dingy shade of green since this prevo is all sunlight and unicorns. Clearly.

Tried to make the hair look a bit leafy/thorny... sort of worked, but I'm still not satisfied with it. Also has a sundew-esque headpiece as a parallel to Necturna's flytrap headpiece, but it didn't work particularly well.

Critiques appreciated, will maybe critique other designs later

Changed a few parts. What do you think?

NecturnaPreEvo-1.jpg

Description of Details

Coat: The teeth-things are like buttons. She can “button up” her coat if she wants.
Vine: Pre-evo Necturna can control this. It’s her weapon until she develops her ghost powers more.
Eyes: Pre-evo Necturna has poor eyesight, so she uses the eyes on her coat to see. (Note: She also has one on the back.) She can also see other things, such as spirits, the future, etc. Thus, she begins to develop her powers. The stronger her “eyesight”, the bigger and brighter the eyes get. When she evolves, her actual eyes can see, but she still retains her cloak-eyes for seeing spirits and such.

I like this a lot more. I think I like what you did with her cloak the most, the mini teeth (buttons) and shorter length of it help it come together. Something you may want to try out in a separate save file is see how the leaf on her head would look without its eyes. Other than that idea. good work.

Much better, I think the changes to the cloak and the eyes on the vine have helped a lot

MLaRF, there's so many cool little touches to your design - just noticed the closed eyes on the wilted flower! - but it will in all liklihood lead to a massive (and complicated) sprite. I don't know what to suggest about that. Maybe it's just the way it is? All your details would be impossible to express in a small sprite form, which is a shame because they're really clever.

thornchild's looks better, bmb's is a nice sunny alternative, I think the design itself has turned out really well~

Here's my Necturna prevo WIP. I tried to go with a ballerina using a tutu and the ribbon. The idea is that she's a spirit of the forest (or a dryad) who is using the vine off of some carnivorous plant which then bites her.

Should I keep working on it??? Feedback appreciated!!

I can see this working out well. try and see if you can work the elements of noctournas lower half into her tutu. I'd like to see how you go with it.

Okay MLaRF that's enough you've worked on this once today you need to focus on homework okay that didn't work.

As suggested, removed legleafbow despite how much I loved it, and lowered the amount of details. Also added borderline unreasonable resizing on eyes and other details so that they look more lively and don't get lost in any potential spritework.

Note of editation that I really should've added the shading I did in the previous version into this version's eyes.

Beedfack!
Chornthild - It's looking even awesomer and more adorable! My only problem is that the red hood distracts the view from the face, and even though it's not that far a distance, the contrast really brings attention away from the more important place. I do love that little line across the red eye in your second image.
MugbaniacMob - It's lookin' to be a good design, I can almost hear a little girl laughing just loking at it! I would only say that the green is kind of out-of-place with the black-white-and-red that is the main focus of the palette. I love the sundew hairdo. (Hairdew?)
Jessifer - It's really looking better. I may say to provide some indication of what's on the back, i.e. a little showing of another petal, or Necturna's red waistband wrapping around. I would also suggest leaning more towards black or red with what little part of the face is exposed. Other than that, lookin' sweet!
Jubway S - As of now, without the colour, it's not quite that clear how nicely everything will tie together, but I'm fine for now, since that can only come after the initial idea. I'd say add a little bit of detail onto the tutu to make it more closely resemble Necturna's.

I'm very interested in designs like yilx's seedy one, rather than maidens. I like the idea of quite a radical morph between Necturna and her pre-evo, without making it outlandish. I doubt I have time to enter, but the doodles I did were similar to yilx's seed - more bud-like and weed-like than maidenly or girlish.

Ok I finally have a cleaned up version. Let me know if there is anything that may need.

Edit : Final submission

Here's my updated/coloured version. I now tried to incorperate the fangs and eyes from Necturna's own dress.

So when evolving into Necturna, the idea is, her dress/tutu flips upside down revealing the eyes more and the closed dress fangs

From my original post for those who hadn't seen it...

I tried to go with a ballerina using a tutu and the ribbon. The idea is that she's a spirit of the forest (or a dryad) who is using the vine off of some carnivorous plant which then bites her.

So should I add/take away anything, change any colours???
Suggestions and feedback appreciated again!!

Bugmaniacbob - looks great, but i can't see it without thinking it's got a shaymin skin on it's back. Perhaps making that part show a touch more resemblance to necturna.

Mlarf - I think the bow thing added a lot, and something between your original and lost recent (I.e. With a smaller bow) would be amazing.

Jessifer - I'm really liking your take on it, but it has a bit too much of the cherrim motif, it could be really great with a bit less of this.

Yilx - I'm not a big fan of the first, but the second one is sooo cute :)

Birkal - Your design has a lot of potential, but I need to see a bit more detail before I can say much.

Quanyalis - Yours is probably my favorite so far. My only advice is a slightly smaller head and the hint of a skirt forming at the bottom, linking a bit closer to necturna.

Here is a little idea, Im having a bit of trouble with uploading more of these, but I want it to be the best possible so Ill take any feedback into consideration!

I had a little time this morning, not enough to really develop this properly, but of my doodles this is the one I like most. Possibly, but not-necessarily, also mono-gendered. She's not maidenly, but aligns Necturna more closely to existing ghost lines.

So...there's my first draft. I know my idea is similar to MLaRF's, but instead of treating the vine like an accessory, I wanted to focus a bit more on the idea that the vine is behaving like an infection , bleeding off all of the life of it's host, until nothing is left but her ghost. I changed the vine to green, and was hoping for a more smooth transition of fading to brown, but, alas, I can't draw/use paint to save my life. When the vine is finished, it turns completely brown and unwraps the spirit of the girl, now dressed in a graceful, although admittedly disturbing gown.
