Hello! I'd just like to say hello to everyone here on Smogon. I'm a total n00b, but I've been learning quickly and many of you have given me a much better understanding of this fun game. Questions are -hyphened, so just scroll down if you want to skip the niceties.
A little about me, I played Pokemon about 10+ years ago when it first came out (Blue verison). I liked it a lot then and loving it now. I missed the entire GSC, LG, FR, RSE franchise, which totally contributes to my n00bness. I have since purchased Emerald and LG and am trying to catch up in terms of experience. Anyway I'm balls deep into Pearl, and have a number of things I need help in understanding.
As a n00b to the forums, I apologize in advance to any and all admins/mods/ and regulars if I'm jumping in at the wrong place or in the wrong forum. I've read all of the Sticky's and it's tough to find the right spot, heh.
Now, I've read over all of the Breeding and IV Guides I could find and a number of things still elude my understanding. I've decided that I want to breed competitively, and I've started with catching Ditto's. Here's where it gets funky:
-I catch Ditto's with Characteristics indicating Perfect IV's : Mischevious, Often dozes off, Somewhat Vain, Alert to sounds, etc. But their respective stats are not indicative of Perfect IV's. Example : Lvl 29 Ditto with 74 HP (75 is max HP at lvl 29) that is marked "Often dozes off". Also the retroactive situation occurs. A lvl 29 Ditto with "Likes to take naps", has 75 HP, which I understand can even out to 29-30 IV's in the long run. But this sort of thing has me uber puzzled.
I figured the easiest way for me to check IV's is to look at the stats from the Ultimate Calculator at Marriland. ( I'll come back here and link it if necessary. ) I've used Metalkid's calculator and even Rare Candied the Dittos up to Level 30 (as its the next required level for accurate IV's), and still, doesn't make sense.
-I understand that the Characteristic is respresentative only of the Pokemon's highest stat. But where is the distinction made? Another example: Same lvl 29 Ditto with 74 HP "Often dozes off" characteristic, has 41 Speed and 41 Sp.Def. (Nature isn't important here, in terms of the example) Now, 41 is the highest stat for any given neutral stat at lvl 29 for Ditto.
Theory of mine, PLEASE debunk: Now, am i correct in assuming that since his HP are NOT 75 at lvl 29, said Ditto "Often dozes off" does not have perfect HP IV, but rather it is simply his highest stat? (say 29, 30, etc)
And in assuming this, i go on to assume that his 41 Speed and 41 SP.D. must be 30 or lower as well?
-I am essentially trying to avoid Rare Candying every Ditto to level 100, or Net Battleing 6 out of every 50 Ditto I may catch at any given time. My balls are busted and in need of fixing.
Thanks for taking your time to read all of this, and again I apologize if I went about it in the wrong format. I hope to see yall in battle!
