Serious Bride, 8, dies of injuries on wedding night in Yemen

Kuwaitis have called for stringent action against a family in Yemen after their eight-year-old daughter died of internal injuries on the first night of her arranged marriage to a man more than five times her age.

Rawan died in city of Hardh in the Governorate of Hajjah in northwestern Yemen, Kuwaiti daily Al Watan reported on Sunday, quoting Yemeni media.

She is believed to have suffered a tear to her genitals and severe bleeding.

Yemeni activists urged the local police to arrest the “beastly groom” and the girl’s family and transfer them to a court where justice would be served and the case would be used to help put an end to the practice of marrying very young girls in the impoverished country, the daily said.

In Kuwait, bloggers offered their prayers for the “bride”, but lashed out at the “groom”, saying that he was a beast who should be severely punished.

This news is beyond horrifying. What parents would marry off an eight year old to a man that old? Maybe I have a western mindset and shouldn't comment on other cultural customs, but I'm just sickened.
 
^ although I don't think the parents did this because they wanted to, they are probably in extreme poverty and had no other option. I could also be wrong.
 
a clear example of when condemning people for their cultural beliefs seems to be the general consensus. it's backward and stupid but convention is largely to blame (although it's very easy to just blame everything on the man).

This. The people aren't the only ones to blame. You need to attack the culture itself.

I must say, while it might be culturally acceptable there, it's pretty sickening that a 40 something year old man wants to have sex with an 8 year old girl in the first place, though I guess there ARE people that want to do that everywhere...
 
I believe that the man is the one at fault, not the culture. He should have had the common sense that something was wrong when he tore right into her genitals, regardless of his culture's beliefs.

you'd be surprised how little intuition people have about other people's bodies, especially one as unfamiliar as one who's eight years old and is a female. Also, the extent of some injuries may not be so immediately apparent

Or you know, her hysterical cries of pain as she was torn apart from the inside? the incessant sobbing as her vagina was literally split open might have tipped him off that something was not okay. okay, think back to when you were eight, how small your dick was. That's about the size of dick that can fit in an eight yearold vagina (or close enough). Now think of the size of your current dick. Just get an erection and imagine back when it was like a quarter of that size. Trauma would be immidiately apparent.


Take a cylinder, with a diameter I don't know, like three times the size of your dick? four? whatever, anyways, then take that tube, go out on to the street, find some random bitch, tie her down, whatever, get her naked, then forcefully insert the aforementioned cylinder into her vagina

there is no way, not any at all, that you could possibly do that and be like, "nah I don't think this is doing much damage"

EDIT: regarding the cries of pain, I wouldn't be surprised if the man just thought that that's a normal thing, due to the whole male emphasis of sex in that sort of culture.

FYI all Islamic practices and laws (including marriage) require a person to be baligh- being mentally sane and having entered puberty.
 
And while being 8 doesn't neccesarily mean you haven't entered puberty, it might still be fair to doubt the mental sanity of anyone who would marry and have sex with said 8 year old.
I guess it's a cultural thing but.. This is exactly ( well, part of lol ) the reason why it isn't accepted here and it should be obvious.
 
Poverty is indeed a terrible thing. While the parents and the groom were indeed to blame, poverty must have driven the parents to this. Or lack of education. Here we are, typing on our SmartPhones and computers while people are being reduced to this. Guys, I encourage you to join a local church and go on a mission trip. Its truly an enlightening experience. I myself went to China to teach English and their poverty seriously shocked me. There are people all arond the world with this similar fate. We cant just sit here and do nothing.
 
Yeah, I don't really think the culture is to blame since even with arranged marriages in islamic countries, people don't marry at 8... You have to have gone through puberty to get married according to the Qur'an. Also there were loads of people in yemen calling for this man to be arrested... it's obviously not ingrained in their culture to have sex with an 8 year old. The man and parents are to blame here, and there really isn't much more to be said besides the fact this is a tragic and sickening case, which as others have pointed out, was probably due to extreme poverty on the parents part and extreme ignorance on the man's part.
 
I'm not going to claim to know what the culture is like in Yemen, but I do know that culture has a HUGE effect on "common sense", and the culture has to be somewhat at fault here if it's allowing a man to be engaged to an 8-year-old, then fuck her before the wedding even happens. It's a stain on the overall culture whether or not the man was a pedophilic sadist or otherwise genuinely didn't know/care enough about his fiancee's body. People would also do well to remember that this used to be the norm in ancient times, when Chinese writing was invented and the Old Testament (and/or its Jewish/Muslim equivalents) was written. Rape was okay if the two people were married. It wasn't always common sense to respect one's fellow human regardless of gender, race, etc. It's a gradual process that's still going on today.
