Pokémon XY General Discussion

I think this will be the first playthrough since Red that I will actually attempt to catch every Pokemon I see. My team--for now--is leaning towards Fennekin, Squirtle, Sylveon, Tyrunt, Male Meowstic, and Gogoat. However, I think I'm going to try to build a new team every time I obtain a gym badge or at least try to rotate my team frequently. I'm pretty excited about this :D

New evolution on Wednesday, eh? I wonder if they meant megaevolution, or it's an actual evolution. Would be interesting if it's a cross-generational evolution... but I'm banking on it being Helioptile's evo.

I thought I would push the discussion in a different direction since things seem to be stagnating.

What are your plans for your first playthrough of XY? Has anyone considered a Nuzlocke run?

Strangely enough, the idea of a first-playthrough Nuzlocke run is enticing to me. It is one of the few opportunities where we will have the opportunity to be genuinely surprised by the Pokémon we encounter.

I might do a Nuzlocke, but considering how easy it is to get experience, I might just keep a bunch of Pokemon in rotation instead or something (because Nuzlocke's make me feel baaaad). If I do end up doing a Nuzlocke, I'll bend the rules a bit and catch EVERYTHING I SEE. It's going to be so fun actually discovering new Pokemon and being genuinely curious/shocked when something evolves. Does it need a stone? Trade? Happiness? New method?

I already have a rough idea based on the pre-release Pokemon of what my team will be, which I hate because I want to make a team on the fly. I always end up pre-planning my runs too much. I'll start with Froakie (and its final evo is ugly, my good pal Blastoise will always be there <3) and, since of the starter birds I've only ever used Pidgeot, I'm going to use Talonflame, too. Meowstic (female!) will probably get a spot, too. I'm trying not to think about it too much and just go with the flow, and see what works together etc etc.

So, with the return of EXP All, and the fact they improved it's sharing abilities... Coupled with the new EXP mechanics of Gen5... Coupled with being able to get EXP just by capturing a Pokemon... Does anyone feel like XY might be like a reverse GSC? By that, I mean everything being over-leveled. I curious to see the levels of the gym leaders & E4/champion are going to be. I like that they included horde battles as a way to challenge us, so I hoped they don't slouch in other regards (Challenge mode from the get-go, please?).

Just to comment on some of those mechanic changes:
"4. Ghost-type Pokemon can freely escape from battle without being influenced by Shadow Tag. (The official website mentioned trapping moves.)"

Does that clear up people's worries about Ghost's new perk being kinda useless? If it applies to all trapping abilities, that's a pretty nifty perk. (I'm not sure if it was confirmed before if it applied to abilities and not just moves, most people assumed it was just moves).

"6. When distributing new moves and abilities, priority was given to new Pokémon."

Please don't make Freeze Dry have shitty distribution...

Is it just me or does that imply Tyrantrum getting a similar move to Freeze Dry that's SE against steels?
Haxorus' dex entry states that its tusks can cut through steel. In fact, a lot of mon have similar entries like "cutting through steel". Sure, it'd be great if Tyrantum gets more coverage. But Freeze Dry is actually going to be more helpful than most of us think. It could bring some Ice mons back.. probably.

So many Pokémon have dex entries that either contradict or don't match up with their movepools/stats that you might as well not look too much into it and get your hopes up.

But then there are the ones where their dex entry does correspond, so I think it's alright. Plus, these little vignettes they've been giving us aren't necessarily their dex entries.

That said, I'd just like to put out one last wishlist for the starters. What I'd like to see, basically, based on past trends and what I think they'll do this round; all the stats are based on 535 BST.

Chespin3
Grass / Dark
85 / 110 / 100 / 85 / 105 / 50
Crunch / Wood Hammer / ?? / ??

I know that Torterra is already rocking a similar spread, but I'd like for Chespin's final evo to have good special defense and actual be capable of attacking from the special end. 50 speed is the lowest stat, period, for a starter yet, but Chespin seems like its bound to be defensive so may as well pad those as much as possible with that typing.

This spread would make Chespin super reliable in-game, with defenses similar to Swampert's and actually the same exact attacking stats. This would be a huge relief after the offensively inept Serperior. Beyond that, it might make it just that more viable competitively.

Fennekin3
Fire / Psychic
70 / 85 / 80 / 115 / 100 / 85
Wish / Psychic / Flamethrower / Thunderbolt

This would be my ideal in-game Fennekin. It's a little bulkier than the past fire-types we've seen and I'd actually like for that to be the case this time around. Plus, our past 3 sets of Fire starters have either been mixed or had a physical focus, so I think we can go ahead and get back to the special attack oriented fire starter already. Thunderbolt because Psychic types often learn that, 85 speed so it's Gardevoir-esque

Fast enough for ingame, not super frail like our past fires, and still lets it use physical attacks. Clutch.

Froakie3
Water / Fighting
70 / 110 / 70 / 105 / 70 / 110
Hydro Pump / Jump Kick / Bounce / Ice Beam

Please, please, please let this (or something similar) be Froakie's final form. We have yet to get a water starter that exceeds 80 speed and I'd like for it to be the fast offensive one of the three for once. Hydro Pump is basically confirmed, and they've been putting so much emphasis on Froakie and Frogadier's jumping abilities that I'd be surprised if they didn't get Jump Kick along with Bounce.

I've always gravitated toward the fast offensive starters (Sceptile, Infernape and Blaziken, etc), so this would be my favorite. It's also the newest direction they could take given the past water starters, so I could easily see them doing this. Competitively, its a Water/Fighting with a physical focus to differentiate itself from Keldeo, but is faster than Poliwrath as well.

Give this to me, gamefreak, and I can't complain about anything else.

I'm just going to, you know, play the game. I'll be getting Y to start (will get X too eventually), and I'll play it for the first time just like every other Pokemon game. Train up a team of 5 pokes (6 takes too long), using whatever looks cool, while keeping an eye on a reference book to make sure I pick ones that are at least decent. That's the only fun way to experience a new generation for me. Playing with a single starter the whole time? Blegh—what's the point of that? You don't even get to use any of the new Pokemon!

For me, competitive battling isn't everything (actually, I don't do it at all anymore—though I still love watching battles and keeping up with the metagame). I actually like to play the games and get the most out of them.

I'm getting X.

I plan on using a party of 6 and will more likely avoid the internet and guides for spoilers. I really want to discover as much as I can by myself. I dont plan on restating the file.

For once a lot of my friends are getting the game so it will be nice to trade for version exclusives and starters.

I will play a party of 6, that's for sure. Chespin (or another starter, if I find Chespin's evolution absolutely horrid) is mandatory. Then, I'll probably use Charmander, and that will be the sole exception of the following rule: "Only new pokémon!". Well, Only new pokémon in the final roster: it's okay if I use pokémon of past generations while I find decent new pokes.

I don't think I will be able to restrain myself from checking new pokémon stats etc., but at least I'm not going to pre-plan my whole team from the very beginning: I'll catch something, hey, good type and looks cool, let's see what internet says about it. But not: "Exactly after Gym 3 I have to go to cave X and grind for a whatevermon, whom I'll teach this, this and that."

I want some sense of surprise... Without going totally blind.

I won't be using a Kanto Starter on my first play through. I've used them all so many times already... I will likely take one on a later play through though on a different cart :)

I hope Challenge mode returns to XY from BW2... That was such a great idea to keep the games interesting, every Gym Leader getting an extra mon and better moves/items etc. I'm not going to shy away from finding things and noting down wherever I find Pokemon or items either. Bring on all the info you want, I'll probably end up absorbing it all extremely quickly anyway and finding optimum routes through caves/dungeons will be good fun (unless they have a token Zubat mon everywhere).

Hopefully they would at least make challenge mode unlockable from the start. Needing to beat the game first to access it was kind of beside the point of adding it in the first place. The games really need a challenge mode, IMO. They're so painfully easy, which is really the only thing I don't really like about the games. OHKOing everything in in existence with the appropriate coverage move gets incredibly old after a while. I really hope Torchic isn't the only available Gen III starter available. I would love to use my favorite starter, Swampert, with actual physical Water moves. It doesn't seem likely, though.

I thought I would push the discussion in a different direction since things seem to be stagnating.

What are your plans for your first playthrough of XY? Has anyone considered a Nuzlocke run?

I won't consider a Nuzlocke run on my first playthrough. My first time I want to take time to get to know the Pokemon and their evolutions and enjoy a brand new world in 3D. I never gave much attention to the overworld but now everything looks like it's coming alive. Which really adds something to the game (obviously).
Fennekin was my starter of choice since day one (I like foxes). I haven't really thought about the rest of my team actually, I want to give all the Pokemon an equal chance. Though, if I get the chance to catch a Murkow he will be in it. Can't wait to see Murkrow/Honchkrow in 3D ^^.

I always train six mon equally. I like to keep everyone within five levels of each other. I know it's technically more efficient to have 5 really strong mons than 6 pretty strong ones, but it's more fun when everyone on my team is an elgible fighter, because otherwise it feels like dead weight holding me back. It'll be a lot easier this gen, though, since HMs seem to have pretty no presence outside of Surf and, I imagine, Fly. I recently restarted my White to help with my Pokemon high, and I noticed I had to keep Simipour because he can learn both Cut and Surf even though he became liability with his frailness. I also had to teach my pathetic-attack-stat-having Swoobat Fly and my Scrafty Strength even though I didn't want to. It'll be fun not being handcuffed to HMs for a change.

I'm getting both games, but playing Y first, and like someone else mentioned, I'm gonna catch everything I see that's new on first run. There's so much we don't know about the Pokemon in this game that I have to see them for myself to make a call. Sure, we know the names, types and appearance of 38* new Pokemon already, and we know some of their attacks and abilities, but that's only, like 1% of everything we can. We don't know stats, we don't know movepools, we don't know evolution methods outside of Pancham and Inkay, we don't know new attacks, we don't know new abilities, we don't know locations/rarity, we don't know jack, and so I'll have to catch everything and learn. Sure, I'm gonna piss my pants a few times when a trainer sends out something I've never heard of (it will be terrifying), but as long as I catch everything I can and learn what I can, I should be able to wing it pretty well.

The scariest part will be not knowing types, especially type changes of evolved forms. Even though I'm gonna catch everything, I'm not gonna be able to train everything. Like, if I catch a Pancham, learn it's Dark, place it my box, and then end up fighting a Pangoro down the line, I would have no way of knowing it becomes a Fighting type, and be sending my Steel or Rock type to it's grave. The same with Fletchling ditching its Normal attribute and becoming a Fire type. I would have never guessed that in a million years in a 100% blind play through. Also, would you have guessed the squid Pokemon Inkay was Psychic/Dark and not part Water? I would've been spamming attacks to no end trying to figure out what works.

This is gonna be a completely new experience. At least when the first games came out, we (at least I) had been watching the anime for months prior to getting the games and knew the names (thanks PokeRap!) and types of all the Pokemon already. The games also had type charts to teach me matchups. Gen 2 also had a booklet explaining Dark and Steel types and, again, the anime taught me which ones were Dark and which ones were Steel. Eventually, I started learning everything from the internet. However, I no longer watch the anime, I do know most of the mechanic changes, but the internet won't be able to fill in the gaps since the games come out simultaneously this time around.

Even without a difficulty setting, this game is gonna be hard. At least more challenging then past games when I knew everything a year in advance of getting the game. I'm gonna have to rely solely on my veteran saavy and do what I can. It's going to be amazing!

Wait, i just realised that both inkay and malamar have a fairy weakness in addition to dat x4 bug weakness. I hope it has good defensive stats or it won't be as good. Also how many hours until the new mon reveal?

I'm getting Y along with a 3DS XL limited edition blue with Xerneas and Yveltal on it. As for pokemon I'll prolly get Chespin or Fennekin and I'll get Squirtle since he has always been my favourite. I'll get Torchic too but just to check out the MEvolving thing. As for pokemon I'll catch only what I think is cool and I'm gonna try to do it completely blind. No guides. No Internet. Nothing. Just old fashioned pokemon fun.

So excited!

I'm going to buy both game but I will play Y first since I like Spritzee and Skrelp more :) In my first playthrought I going to start with Chespin (mainly cause I really want to play with Pyroar and Skrelp, I'm really scared of what Chespin might turn into xD) and only use new pokémon that I think looks cool. I don't care about stats or how good the pokémon is, I mean if the pokémon is bad that will just make the game harder and isn't that a good thing? ;)

Not really interested in Nuzlocke since I want to just enjoy the story and all the new places and pokémon first. I want to be able too choose what pokémon to have in my team.

I'll wait until the info comes out before I start "ranting," but till then...

The Exp. All doesn't make the game easier, simply it makes grinding a bit more tolerable. I think it is a nice little touch for the game.

Well, the new Fairy-types, if confirmed, are going to be a pain to handle. Chansey and Blissey may just be Ubers because of the new typing.

Totally agree. The beauty of the 3ds not being cracked will mean we will get to discover and discover the magic again (unless you buy the guide).
Everything so far is pointing to maybe one of the best Pokemon games being created. I really hope the 3ds does not get cracked because it will bring the element
of time and hardwork rather than quick fixes. A more rewarding experience is always felt by surprises down a long road.

On another note I'm deffo going for Chespin. Always "Root" for the underdog (pun) #TEAMGRASS

I had a team in mind until more pokemon were teased.

I currently want to go with, which is subject to change

-Chespin
-Squirtle
-Pyroar
-Gardevoir
-Tyrantrum
-possibly Jolteon

Huh?

Both are weak to steel and posion now seems like a fair trade

The same thing I did with BW2: catch A, use A until B appears, pick B, fuck A (figuratively). Not even Fennekin will be save from being boxed.

I used 26 or so in my JP B2 and ~12 in my US version until the eighth badge. I'm expecting a full-retard run of 35+ pokémon, from Fennekin until the late game.
Honestly this is the best way to play and is what kept me interested while replaying B/W2. That being said I really want to be surprised which is hard for me because I can't handle surprises. I hope I can stay sane until the 12th..

"Pokémon X & Y - New Pokémon

The official site has revealed that yet another new Pokémon will be revealed on their Facebook page on September 25th. This Pokémon is said to be an evolved Pokémon but there are no further clues. We'll bring details as soon as we have them"

Don't -think- this was posted yet :)
