MLB 2013 Season Thread

^Agree with that analysis. Choice is a power-hitting prospect who may hit 60 homers playing half his games in Arlington.

Reds got a pretty highly regarded left-handed pitching prospect for Ryan Hanigan. I loved Hanigan and the dude calls a game as good as anyone there is, but I really like the trade for the Reds, especially since I think Mesoraco has the talent to become an all-star at his position.

Lol silly M's. Giving a 10 year, $240 million contract to a 31 year old. Cano got his money, now he has to prepare to rot in obscurity for the next few years playing in Seattle. M's may not be done making big moves tho
I do agree that they are WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY overpaying him, but I still think it was a good move overall. The Mariners needed some bats. Now they have a really solid infield core with Cano and Kyle Seager (one of the most underrated players in the sport) to go along with their solid pitching staff anchored by one of the best in the game. I wouldn't be surprised if they make the playoffs the next few years.

I'll give the Mariners credit for spending in that management had been cheap in the past and didn't reward the fans with competitive teams. At least with Cano, if nothing else, gives the fans something to get excited about. Rumor has it M's are also pursuing David Price. Imagine a 1-2-3 of Felix, Price, and Iwakuma...

the mariners are doing it wrong, hes worth more than that now but isnt worth it until hes 41... something roughly 6 years 180ish would have been a much better deal, unfortunately the fact some team was gonna be stupid enough to offer him that deal meant he woudlnt sign for a "reasonable" deal

Kinda bummed to hear Doc retire... Sucks he had to deal with that recurring shoulder problem throughout last season. Will be very disappointed if he isn't inducted into Cooperstown.

He's possibly the best pitcher of the last decade. I think he'll be a first ballot HOFer. Sad to see him go, a modern day legend. Will always remember those incredible playoff performances for the Phillies, even if I despised the team as a whole

difficult to even argue anyone is better than him for the last decade, from 2002-2012 among pitchers with 1500+ innings, he solidly led in all of war, fip and xfip, and just trailed johan santana by .05 in era. The only thing that looks odd for a surefire hall of famer is his 67 career war, but largely this has been a product of recent years being overall unkind to starting pitchers, as both the number of innings being thrown decreases and offense increases, making it much harder to really shine year over year in value stats like pitchers used to be able to. Great pitcher though, unfortunate the career of a guy who was always notable for his durability should end this way (or perhaps there's some causation there...)

oh my god people are reacting negatively towards the banning of collisions at home plate this is hilarious. like, everyone here thinks it was a good idea right? please tell me so

they were absurd. they barely worked and they were dangerous as hell. they probably resulted in twice as many injuries as successful plays

Other than arguing against change for the sake of change, it's really not a bad idea at all. No other base gets blocked like home plate.

That's a great deal for Texas with that discount they got compared to the Yankees. I felt like the lefty weakness for him might be a problem but his career vs LH starters in 1000 PA is a .372 OBP still (although slugging pct. isn't any higher than that). That drops all the way down to like .340 with the lefty specialists included but pinch hitting for him late in a game isn't as big of a deal IMO because his defense isn't the crucial thing from him.

I want a lefty mashing pinch hitter for my own team because Andre Ethier is this exact same situation.

Now that football season has ended and Spring Training is a mere handful of days away. I have spent the entire off season preparing to take down Stallion in fantasy baseball this year. I have spent countless hours camped outside of Bill James' house asking him questions about defense independent component earned run average, player empirical comparison and optimization test algorithm, weighted runs created plus and yes, even Tangotiger's Marcel statistic. I have meditated on the knowledge which I have received and am definitely ready for this new fantasy season. I promise all of you that his reign of tyranny and oppression will end in 2014, and the balance of power will return to Smogon Fantasy sports.

I'm afraid all of that will be for naught, as I am going to recapture my fantasy baseball glory this season.

Sad day to be a baseball fan today.

Reports are that former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling has been diagnosed with cancer.

Also former baseball player and Mets broadcaster Ralph Kiner has passed away at age 91. :/
