First Competitive Team

Hey all, Raedin here with my first competitive team (It's also my first thread since I joined! Woot!) Anyway, I did a lot of research on the topic, watched a LOT of Wi-Fi battles and tinkered with the setup I currently have for a couple weeks. I haven't won very many matches, but I am chalking that up to my lack of experience. So, here we go:

Blastoise @ Blastoisinite
Modest
Mega Launcher
252SpAtk/252HP/4SpDef
Rapid Spin
Dark Pulse
Water Pulse
Aura Sphere

This was the first Poke I decided on. I love how bulky Blastoise is, and with the introduction of it's Mega it has become one of my favorite Pokemon next to Hitmonchan. It is mainly used to annihilate entry hazards and tank a hit or two while retaliating with Mega Launcher boosted attacks. Very hard hitting, and very hard to take down.

Aegislash @ Leftovers
Quiet
Stance Change
252HP/252SpAtk/4Atk
King's Shield
Flash Cannon
Shadow Ball
Sacred Sword

This one was a bit tough to formulate, since the basic, cookie-cutter version of 'Slash is extremely tempting to use, but very easy to see coming. I opted for Shadow Ball in place of Swords Dance with a Brave nature to get the hard hitting physical smacks without a boost while being able to surprise with a Shadow Ball. I love the typing, and King's Shield is a great check against Physical attackers.

Talonflame @ Life Orb
Adamant
Gale Wings
252Atk/124HP/132Spe
Roost
Swords Dance
Brave Bird
Flare Blitz

Talonflame is one of the 6th Gen Pokemon that truly surprised me with its effectiveness. Priority Brave Bird is a nasty threat, especially once you factor in LO and STAB. Flare Blitz is another obvious attack along with Brave Bird. Initially, I was going to toss Swords Dance on the set, but I went with Bulk Up to maybe help Talonflame tolerate that much more damage. This beast will be my main attacker (Physically).

Klefki @ Light Clay
Bold
Prankster
252HP/252Def/4SpDef
Light Screen
Reflect
Spikes
Foul Play

I HATED this little guy when I first saw him.. Until I saw what he was capable of. Prankster makes him a great lead, setting up Dual Screens or a layer or two of Spikes before it's taken down. It has great defensive typing, and with Foul Play, it will be able to soften up my enemy for it's teammate. It has served me well so far, even though I typically set up Screens before I lay out Spikes.

Trevenant @ Sitrus Berry
Impish
Natural Cure
252HP/120Def/132Spe
Rest
Will-O-Wisp
Horn Leech
Shadow Claw

Sylveon @ Safety Goggles
Bold
Cute Charm
252HP/252Def/4SpAtk
Wish
Toxic
Protect
Moon Blast

This is the one I had the most trouble deciding on; I actually have found use for it on many occasions, but at the same time I have found myself to be fine without it. It is supposed to be my Wish Passer for when my team needs a good healing. Moon Blast is to give it something to defend itself, especially for when I need to slay a Dragon.

So here is my team, and hopefully someone can give me the advice that I need to make it function better. As previously stated, this is my first competitively built team but do not hesitate to be brutally honest lol Thanks in advance!

it looks like your team has a little potential, but I wanted to bring some things to your attention.

1: klefki has mediocre offense. means play rough isn't playing his strengths.

2: aegislash has great stats for running mixed sets, but you have no reason to run shadow ball and shadow sneak.

3: You have 4 leftovers users when you should only have one.

4: talonflame has no reason to run bulk up, it loses too much health by stealth rocks and his typing and bulk is not suited for it.

here is what I suggest you do to fix theses problems.

1: if your going for a support kelfki you should use it to its strengths. prankster t-wave is nothing to shy away from if you want to "soften up" your opponents.
and if you really want to run an attacking move swagger rough play is a great combo.

2: aegislash should run shadow ball over shadow sneak if you want a mixed set. you Will not do enough damage with SS to make it worth keeping. I suggest you replace that with flash cannon since you have no attack investment or swords dance.

3: tyrantrum could run shell bell over leftovers, red card works as well. aegislash is the best one to have leftovers thanks to amazing bulk and kings shield. sylveon is better off using a different item like safety goggles to prevent weather damage and powders from shutting you down. Sylveon really shouldn't run protect because it doesn't accomplish any goals. I suggest calm mind instead.

4: you could run swords dance instead of bulk up and have better results. you could even run a choice band set

in conclusion:

You should consider your team mates strengths and weaknesses before just slapping on a few good moves. You have some decent pokemon and you seem to know what you want your pokemon to do, just tweak the execution. unfortunately this team leans more to the uu side of each of these pokemon than the ou. I think you need to reconsider current threats and whats going to cause you problems. Gyrados is a good place to start.

Edit: Tyrantrum Does Not get rock head by normal means. Idk where in the heck serebii pulled it from.

So this is some little nitpick things that I have with your team :P :
  1. Never put a nature that benefits a stat that you barely invest on it. I am talking about Aegislash having a Brave Nature and only 4 EVs at Attack. I recommend you a +Sp.Att -Speed Nature!

  2. Put Foul Play on Klefki..It has really mediocre offensive capabilities and with Foul Play you don't even have to invest on it's offensive stats as it deals damage based on the Opponent's attack stats!

  3. Put Toxic on Sylveon instead of BP. BP is preferred on Pokemon that don't want to be Pursuit trapped (Espeon,Celebi etc.) or that pass stat boosts

  4. You have a big ground weakness. Find a way to deal with it. (Substitute Tyrantrum with a Grass type so you can have a Grass/Water/Fire core (I recommend Trevenant))
That's all from me! I hope I helped. Thanks!

Thanks for the advice! As you can see, my experience with competitive Pokemon is minimal, so I really appreciate the pointers.

Hiryunix I see what you mean by excess Leftovers (It looks like a bad case of Thanksgiving). That being said, I have to ask: How exactly does one acquire Rock Head Tyrunt?

GarchompPit Thanks for the tips! Coincidentally, Trevenant was a Pokemon I was considering as a Spin Blocker, so I'll definitely look into it.

I'll post the changes to my team tonight, I gotta head off to work.

Awrighty, so I made a few changes to the team. The biggest change would be using Trevenant instead of Tyrantrum. Anyway, I'll list the changes and update the OP:

- Tyrantrum -> Trevenant
- Took out Baton Pass on Sylveon and replaced with Toxic for passive damage. Also replaced Leftovers for Safety Goggles for protection against Sandstorm
-Gave Talonflame Swords Dance instead of Bulk Up
-Now using Flash Cannon and Quiet nature for Aegislash
-Klefki now has Foul play instead of Play Rough.

Good to hear you made some changes :) But still I think Bulk Up is a much superior choice to SD, but I guess it's your call :P

I also think that Bulk Up is the superior option, but with my lack of experience I think it is a fair alternative that may turn out to be the better option. I'm just hoping that I don't end up finding that my team has a Achilles Heel lol
