Name: aXl/Falgaia/jadeVelocity (write it or I'll take off marks like in elementary school)
1. How did you choose your Smogon username?
- I’m a huge Megaman fan, and during the registration process for Smogon some 4-5 odd years ago I had been freaking out over Axl, as he only appeared in the two Megaman X games I had no access to being born and raised on pure Nintendo. He was also my favorite character out of the Command Mission cast, and the transforming aspect felt awesome to say the least. aXl is a combination between his name and Megaman X.
- Falgaia/Falgaea/Falgæa are all based off of a combination of the Falcon and Gaea armors from the Megaman X games, and I use these names for most of my gaming needs.
- jadeVelocity is pulled from the song “Word Disassociation” by Lemon Demon, and I have grown to using it as a third alias as of late on sites such as Serebii.
2. What is your favourite colour? (you may pick more than one, limit 3)
Red, specifically Crimson. I’m also a big fan of that one orange color you see on cars every now and then, you know the one, all shiny and near bronze tone. Third would probably be a darker shade of Cyan/Turquoise.
3. Approximately how long have you been spriting?
Approximately five years. I began spriting not long after joining Smogon during Spring Break while I was in middle school. It quickly became a hobby of mine that I engaged in while waiting to be picked up at school. I had a brief two-year stint where I practiced other mediums, before I decided to turn to my roots over the summer. Spriting was the first art form I came to know, barring painting miniatures.
Also, whoever runs the Cave of Dragonflies webpage is directly responsible for me learning how to sprite, as I'd still have no idea how to had their guide not told me to use MS Paint.
4. Why did you join the sprite project?
Honestly I joined the Sprite project because it gave me inspiration to do some work, something I desperately lack. I first caught word of it on Facebook through Smogon’s page, and realized that I needed to contribute since I had skills that could prove useful and I had lost the drive to go through with weekly spriting competitions. Additionally, the heavens opened up and I managed to have access to a paint program on my school computer, something I haven’t had access to for nearly 3 years. This gave me the time I needed to actively pursue spriting, as my previous schedule only gave me access to paint programs on the weekends or for a measly hour on weekdays.
5. a) What are your favourite Pokemon? Pick three.
1. Gallade (Like seriously tho)
2.
Gallade Virizion
3.
Gallade Clefable (Gen IV Gravity Team FTW)
5. b) What is your favourite gen. 6 Pokemon?
-Clawitzer
6. If you were a Pokemon, what would you be, and why?
-Answered this question before, and I felt that Shaymin was a fairly good representation of me as a person. Really weird little creature with a lot of potential, although I’m too shy and reserved to use it half of the time.
7. Describe your competitive Pokemon experience, e.g., favourite tier(s).
I first got started way back when Shoddy Battle was a thing in Gen IV, which is probably why I like so many Gen IV pokemon even though Diamond and Pearl are my least favorite Pokemon games. I tend to stick to OU/UU tiers and enjoy breaking the meta with weird tactics like Gravity and Singles Trick Room teams. I recently got into Pokemon Showdown after a several-year hiatus, again because it was a program I could actually access from school. I love being able to use pokemon and tactics that no one else uses, and to this day I still think Gallade is viable in OU.
OPTIONAL QUESTIONS:
8. Cool/random facts about yourself? What do you like to do outside of art/spriting?
-I’m a huge fan of music. I tend to buy music by the album, and was known for buying an album a week off of iTunes for a solid year. Some of my favorite artists include
Faded Paper Figures,
Goldfish,
Dresses,
Morning Teleportation, and
Coheed and Cambria, just to demonstrate a few of my varied interests. Artist names link to some of my favorite tracks from each.
-I used to be addicted to Orbit White chewing gum, but ever since I got my braces, my addiction moved over to Icebreakers Frost, also known as the crack cocaine of the Wal-Mart mints shelves. (spearmint in both cases)
-I’m a huge Mega man fan, and have at the very least played all Mega Man games that have come to Nintendo consoles barring Legends. Although I’m not much for speed-runs, I have beaten Megaman 9 in under one hour. Me and my brother tend to tag-team the games, swapping the controller with every in-game death.
-I’m also a big fan of RPGs, and currently have SMT4 and Fire Emblem Awakening on backlog.
-I’ve played League of Legends profusely for the past two years. My favorite character is Anivia.
-Similarly, phoenixes are my favorite mythical animal.
-I also ran two RP Tumblrs for different characters from League of Legends over the past year.
-I’ve played numerous pen-and-paper RPGs in my short time, although I have never played Dungeons and Dragons, the one that started it all.
-I also have a history of playing tabletop games such as Warmachine and (soon to be) Warhammer Fantasy. Essentially hyper-tactical boardgames that make Chess look like Tic-Tac-Toe that utilize different factions of miniatures typically averaging 1-2 inches tall arranged in various armies. Painting these miniatures was technically my first real exposure to art.
-On a similar note, I have placed in national-level events for the game Monsterpocalypse, a game similar to Heroclix in that it is a collectable miniatures game, but varies in that it is essentially a board game of Pacific Rim-style giant monster fights. National level meaning all 20 people who play the game. I still curse Privateer Press for abandoning the game.
-I switched schools going into high school, and it was the best decision of my life.
9. Which sprites have been your favourite to work on?/Which do you think turned out the best?
Noivern. Even though that thing took some serious hours, it paid off and gave me new found respect for wyverns.
10. Any shout-outs to your fellow spriters?
princessofmusic for coming up with this brilliant idea and giving me excellent QC consistently. Also, congrats of the Artist Badge! You deserve it!
viperdk1, for giving me color correction QC!
Layell, for hosting this project and generally being a cool dude.
Siiilver, for being awesome and having a number of I’s in your name that I always forget.
Legitimate Username, for never ceasing to amaze me with your animation skills.
Quanyails, because I never replied to your PM and now I feel horrible because i never had the spare time to do it and I’m too socially awkward to get over myself and shoot you a reply. Sorry about that. I have been taking your comments to heart though, and I apologize if I come off as being rude.
To everyone new that’s been joining in, because you’re all as awesome as any of us and I hope your art brings you places. +)
To everyone here in general for being friendly enough to put up with my overly-paranoid self and taking the time out of your day to give me helpful advice. I’m keeping any and all comments in mind, and if I ever sound like I’m trying to bash your opinions, I’m usually just trying to explain my reasoning and failing miserably. I suck at communication.
And to you, the awesome person who actually read this far. You’re awesome, and just redeemed the past hour of me typing into Google Docs. +)
