What are you smoking? First it's IVs, not EVs. Also, it's a total of 3 IVs passed down, 1 from the father, 1 from the mother, and 1 random IV.

You forgot an important detail. The 2nd IV cannot be either HP IV, and the 3rd passed down cannot be either Defense or HP.

Swampert used Protect!
Opponent Switches to Aerodactyl
Swampert used Protect! Protect Failed!
Aerodactyl kills Swampert

So does protect have a chance to fail even if it did nothing the previous turn? Or is it a shoddy battle glitch

I think it's a confusion in flavor text, since even if they switch out, it will say "Swampert Protected itself!"

Is there any way to get Berry Juice in D/P? You know, if you gave Shuckle a Berry and walked a lot, it would turn into Berry Juice.

It's not for competitive or anything, it's just because it's cool.

If you use protect after that, would it have a 50% chance to fail?

That's my question!

As far as I'm aware, it has the chance to fail, yes, because otherwise, double-battlers would totally abuse that by just switching in and out for those "hit-all" moves.

My query:

I'm extemely curious as to other's opinions on the combination of sleep-move/sub... For some reason, (though, logic fails me here, as I logically cannot see anything that this would be useful for...) my gut instinct tells me it has potential.

Mind you, there are far better combinations, but one of my ninetales is
252 Nature-spd, 252 +satk @ petaya berry.
  1. Hypnosis
  2. Substitute
  3. Nasty plot
  4. Flamethrower
So, because I'm clearly biased about this set, would somebody set me straight about this combo which, logically, makes little sense?

Actually, that's a quite decent strategy and has seen significant use with Jynx's Luna set and in Ubers, Darkrai. Your problem is that any Water type completely walls you and proceeds to wreck you. Jynx could boost its Special Defense with Calm Mind and wasn't weak to Water. Granted, Ninetales can Calm Mind, too, but it sorta needs the faster Nasty Plot due to its lack of power. Leftovers over Petaya Berry; it will help you get more Substitutes off.

Again, Thank you for the speedy replies, Sage... The other one I was considering for UU(NU?) involved a venomoth with sleep powder, but no stat-boosting move. Any suggestions on what the fourth move could be (The third would almost have to be bug-buzz.) I was considering toxic spikes, because with tinted lens, I won't be walled so easily, and it allows for a decent set up... other than that though, for that particular pokemon, I've got very little in terms of ideas. I -suppose- a para-support move, like weather or reflect could be involved, but then I'd just be wasting a turn/moveslot with the substitute. The other semi-viable possibility is baton-pass, allowing me to pass on a substitute (and maybe a berry boost) to somebody else.

Also, I apologize for a non-simple question in this thread... it just seems like the only reasonable place to put it. Making a new thread over a single strategy just seems wasteful.

The Venomoth isn't too good. The point of putting your opponent to sleep is to allow you a turn to use a stat-boosting attack and then either set up more or sweep your opponent. You could try Agility/Substitute/Baton Pass/Sleep Powder and try to pass to something more fit for sweeping. If you switch in on something slower and successfully put it to sleep, you have a very good chance of getting a pass off.

EDIT: Yay, nearly 100 pages...

Thank you for your time and advice. My worries were primarily what you stated, so, I'll drop the concept, primarily because it leaves a giant hole in the wall for offense, closing up three moveslots for support only, and most people switch when asleep anyway, giving me that free turn to boost my stats. A dark pulse/extrasensory, flamethrower, hypnosis, and nasty plot moveset would do the same job only better for the ninetales.

Also, grats on page 100 of helping peoples.
