TOPIC: Higher quality authority in the sub-chats

Showdown is perhaps one of the strongest rule-enforcer websites I have frequented. The rules on this website are very detailed and, due to the nature and maturity of the main userbase, entirely needed.

However, since the rules are so strictly enforced, those who actually enforce the rules, in some cases, are often hypocritical in that they themselves do not follow the rules. So one must question the competence of certain auth.

'Power abuse' is not uncommon in certain rooms, it occurs more often in some rooms than in others. Certain rooms have their own 'internet culture' and therefore their own community. Some rooms even have their own set of sub-rules. These, naturally, fluctuate from room to room. But there is no doubt, in my opinion, that various global rules are being broken by the higher members of authority.

I have seen room owners calling regular users (BAN ME PLEASE)s; I have seen drivers muting people becuase they took personal offence at a joke; room moderators ignoring various questions from newer users. Today I seen a room driver come into the room I help moderate (Spanish chat) and use a banned phrase.

What thus is my suggestion?

I recommend that both Room Owners are regularly checked by global auth in terms of competence and secondly that power abuse is treated more seriously by the members of staff.

The former can be done by a member of global auth entering a random chat room and breaking a mild (or severe if need be) global rule and see how any of the members of staff react. The latter is community dependent. If the auth is so keen on enforcing the rules on the site's userbase, it is only just to assume that the same would be applicable to them.

To clarify, this is not a complaint, but a suggestion. I myself am a moderador in one of the rooms and I believe I can say and give an honest opinion on the penal system of the website.

No auth in their right mind would abuse anyone if they see a global in the room tho. If this idea goes through they should probably go ''undercover'' or something

Thinking economically, I feel this is a big effort on the global staff's part to keep control of the stock of room auth while inshould be put into finding competent auth to begin with. If this is a problem, the solution, if any, should be to encourage communication between regular users and global staff regarding room issues.

It keeps bothering me that when you're in a battle you can only see 2 rooms. Even if you're in like 4.
My suggestion is to move the room tabs to another spot so we can see if we get highlighted in other rooms that are not on the screen.

And an option to move the order of the rooms you're in would be much appreciated as well.
We'll see how far this goes.
You can filter through your rooms by pressing the left/right arrows in any chatroom. Not quite what you were asking for, but it pretty well gets the job done.

You can also click on the popup notification in the bottom right, assuming you have them enabled, and it will take you directly to the room where you were highlighted.

This is true. The lobby in itself is a very large burden and I understand that global auth may not be able to deal with other issues at certain times. This could be solved by creating a group called 'Scouts'. These could either be a separate entity (with its own simbol) or a certain group of global auth whose job is not only to look after the lobby (and everything else that a global auth entails) but also ensure the quality of other chats, dealing with corrupt rooms and ensuring a higher coherence among the Showdown community.

As I briefly mentioned in my previous post, a platform (i.e better communication) would prove essential to solve or at least ameliorate some of the aforementioned problems. Users could point out abusive auth in an anonymous fashion, and if adequate proof is given, the appeal should be taken seriously by either a normal global auth or a 'Scout' and the rank of the abusive auth should be questioned.

In regards to what dansparce said, that is exactly what I meant. The global auth (or Scout) would be incognito at the time of the investigation, so as to not create a false atmosphere and promote 'good/false' behaviour.

Thanks for your suggestion, I'll try to help you out explaining this as best I can. Being a room owner myself I know all too well about power abuse and things like that. Most if not all of your concerns can be chocked up to not knowing the inside jokes of the rooms in question. So on to your points:

'Power abuse' is not uncommon in certain rooms, it occurs more often in some rooms than in others. Certain rooms have their own 'internet culture' and therefore their own community. Some rooms even have their own set of sub-rules. These, naturally, fluctuate from room to room. But there is no doubt, in my opinion, that various global rules are being broken by the higher members of authority.

Power Abuse is a wide term, this can be anything from harmless stuff like abusing /declare, /announce, /pick or more questionable uses of power like promoting/demoting users as a joke. What's important to remember is context certain people have friendships with other people and know inside jokes and things like that. So where you see a driver being promoted to mod then quickly demoted you may not know the story behind it that there may be an inside joke that the driver wanted mod for a long time and their just teasing him or something to that effect. So many things not only in PS but in life in general are messed up due to people not knowing the context of the situation.

Now this use of '(BAN ME PLEASE)' or 'nigga' or whatever by room owners I can pretty much guarantee both parties were ok with it. Just because a user is not ranked in the room it doesn't mean they are exempt from the inside jokes of the room. The part about drivers muting people because they took personal offence at a joke is plausible but you have to remember certain people have certain things that may annoy them or hurt them in a certain way. Unfortunately this is not acceptable, when a person has authority or power they are expected to put their personal afflictions beside and focus on their jobs as a staff member. As for mods ignoring questions from users this unfortunately happens all over PS and its not just mods, many user's questions are overlooked but certainly not ignored. This is usually due to them being busy or in other rooms or just generally missing the question. We try to answer every question we can but some users being overlooked is inevitable.

I recommend that both Room Owners are regularly checked by global auth in terms of competence and secondly that power abuse is treated more seriously by the members of staff.

This generally happens when/if there has been a mistake. I'm not sure how much of this I can reveal but recently concerns have been expressed about some immature/undeserving room owners a while back. I think the situation has been dealt with but as far as I know room owners are not monitored as much as I think you'd like.

In conclusion thanks a lot for your suggestion. I think I've cleared up some of your concerns and if you have anything else you'd like to say feel free to let us know! :)

I suggest you adding a buttom or a command to give the possibility to tie, it would be great, because sometimes you need it.

Ties are already a thing but you shouldn't be able to click a button and get a tie. Ties, if I recall correctly, are when both of the players' last pokemon faint at the same time. This isn't in need of any change/influence

If what you're talking about is some kind of "Offer Draw" button, I think that would be a good idea. However, if something like that hasn't already been implemented by now, there might be some flaw I'm overlooking.

Leaders and admins can force ties if needed.

Ties like this were removed in order to mirror in-game mechanics better.

worst shitpost attempt ever
Magikarp should be moved to Uber for it's ability to sweep out a entire team including a Mega Blaziken with Flail at 1 HP. A MEGA BLAZIKEN WITH FLAIL. That's not a joke. YouTube user Pimpnite actually did that. I guess I should say this. Be careful around a Magikarp at low HP. It can and therefore will be the end of your Blaziken or whatever sweep.

As much as we'd love to do that, we are not the OU council, but rather a humble simulator that hosts the OU and Ubers tiers. While it can decimate teams that are made up of pokemon that can't learn TMs or HMs with its wide variety of moves depending on what it wants to run (It can 2HKO Ho-Oh, a prominent Ubers special wall, with the right conditions), people have not tapped into this fish's hidden powers (and that's why it doesn't get hidden power), and thus the banning of this behemoth is a very low priority. However, once the suspect test of Magic Guard Clefable that an OU council member/leader (who I shall not name because we all know who it is) has planned, along with Shuckle's test planned by the same person, is finished, I promise you that this beast will be suspected.

Hey people. c:

I have been noticing that a lot of people just don't see the bottom part in the teambuilder that says "Clearing your cookies (specifically, localStorage) will delete your teams." (It's even in bold.)

So maybe making it look like
Screen Shot 2014-06-17 at 10.26.15 PM.png
can help a lot of people since most of the time, I see them raging, "OMG WHY DID MY TEAM GET DELETED?!?!"

Maybe putting it on the top instead of the bottom could be helpful, too!

The start of tournaments and any forcibly ended ones, with the names of who started/ended them, should be recorded in the modlog.

How about sprites according to the generation you are playing. Like for example:
142.png

This is how Aerodactyl would look in a generation 1 battle.
142.png

While he could look like this when playing generation 2 battles.
Doesn't really add much important but just seems like a nice visual addition.

Layell said this might be added in the future iirc

I think that adding a command for reseting the ladder rankings (ELO, COIL, rank etc...) in an alt will be a great addition. Why ? Because many poeple are always testing in the ladder and creating too many alts for each team won't be a solution. So for exemple if there is a command /reset [tier] or /erase [tier] or something else, i think it will be nice and will help a lot of players tbh.

As soon as you create and register a new alt your ladder ranking is 1000 on that alt. If your talking about a command to reset the ladder ranking on your own account I believe that is already on Zarel's to do list.

Sweet, this sounds like an amazing edition to Showdown so you don't have to create alts for testing teams or simply because you had a terrible win loss start.

Have limber ditto banned in the smogon doubles battle format just to prevent confusion as to why it can't use the only move it can use.
