Altaria is supposed to run a Jolly nature so that it isn't outspeed and Koed by Mega Beedrill. =/ Although, I do agree Altaria is indeed a problem.

back again once again...

Hey guys, it's honestly been a while since I've played RU and mons in general but with the passing of the beginning of ORAS but I wanted to share some cool sets that break a lot of the things running around in the meta.

plant (Tangrowth) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 120 HP / 252 SpA / 136 Spe
Modest Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Focus Blast
- Sleep Powder
- Hidden Power [Fire]

ive been running this monster on volturn because rhyperior is a problem and this thing has probably been the MVP of a ton of my matches. free switches on things like rhyperior, alomomola, Doublade, Gastroslug, and more. The thing this has over LO Amoonguss or something else of the sort is that it reliably checks rhyperior, which is actually pretty big. This thing craps all over balance, sleeping common switchins and then letting you get a free switch out to more potential momentum which is really cool. This thing hits like a thing that hits really hard and has good enough coverage with power to support it.

This next mon could be a little more dumb and controversial but i actually really like it and think it is a viable option for a spot on a team.

slug (Magcargo) @ Leftovers
Ability: Flame Body
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Recover
- Stealth Rock
- Lava Plume
- Toxic

OK BEFORE YOU ALL SCREAM AND LAUGH AND JEER AND POINT LET ME TELL YOU THIS THING PUTS IN SO MUCH WORK ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY omalowd,,,

Scarf Moltres is a huge threat in this meta. Fletchinder is a big threat in this meta, no doubt about it. The thing i found annoying about rhyperior was the fact it got worn down so easily by Will-o-Wisp on teams where I couldn't be troubled to run a cleric for one reason or another. This is the alternative. A good partner for mega-bee, the mon i was testing, magcargo
checks a lot of things in the metagame and counters those two prominent threats mentioned earlier. Now when i say it CHECKS a lot, I mean it checks a lot. checks Meloetta, Amoonguss, (fire burds) mega bee with koff over drill run, and more. tl;dr i like slug and both of these sets are

I'm digging that Magcargo. How's Ancientpower/HP Rock over either Toxic or Rocks (more over toxic though) for an immediate answer to the Fire/Flyings?

I'm interested how well it "checks" Meloetta, too, since even after the Mega's introduction into RU the thing that still seems the most ridiculous to me is Meloetta. Seriously, how do people counter it? There must be at least three very solid ways otherwise I couldn't imagine it would've stayed in the tier for this long.

The best Meloetta answers in this tier right now are: Registeel, SpDef Drapion (esp. with Putsuit), AV Escavalier, Spiritomb, and SpDef Skuntank (very shaky)

Note that many of those lose to one of Meloetta's sets, like AV Relic Song, or are crippled by Trick.

Spiritomb, Registeel, Escavalier, and some other Pokemon like Rhyperior etc are pretty good counters. Drapion can take a Hyper Voice and Knock Off its specs, but takes like 60% in the process. Skuntank can trap/revenge with Pursuit and Sucker Punch respectively. The latter two aren't good answers tho cuz they take a lot from hyper voice.

The most reliable answer is Spiritomb, although a stray Dazzling Gleam can hurt, but I've yet to see anyone actually use that. Spiritomb's immune to both STABs and can take Shadow Ball easily, while pursuit trapping Meloetta. It's win-win unless Melo uses u-turn on the switch or haz dgleam.

Yeah, Spiritomb is the best answer to Meloetta by far. The best Meloetta can do is hit it with U-turn on the switch or smack it with Dazzling Gleam. The latter will still only create a 50 / 50 with Sucker Punch and Pursuit as even Specs Dazzling Gleam fails to OHKO Spiritomb without some prior damage. AV Escavalier is also a solid response, but it will need to carry Pursuit to keep from getting worn down too quickly since Meloetta is often accompanied by a Spikes user of some sort.

One new threat not talked about is Banded Tyrantrum:
20140523163332

Tyrantrum @ Choice Band
Ability: Strong Jaw
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Fire Fang

If you are not aware Tyrantrum now gets Outrage through ORAS move tutors, which is insanely powerful when paired with a Choice Band

Here are some important calcs:

(252+ Banded Tyrantrum Outrage vs 248/252+ Alomomola Damage: 47.8 - 56.4%)
(252+ Banded Tyrantrum Outrage vs 248/252+ Tangrowth Damage: 46.8 - 55.3%)
(252+ Banded Tyrantrum Outrage vs 248/252+ Weezing Damage: 58.5 - 69.3%)
(252+ Banded Tyrantrum Outrage vs 248/252+ Eviolite Golbat Damage: 52.6 - 62%)

As you can see from these calcs, Tyrantrum is a dangerous wallbreaker, able to 2HKO some of RU's finest physical walls. If you are able to eliminate all fairy and steel types, Tyrantrum's Outrage usually kills anything switched in. Tyrantrum also has extremely diverse strategies, you can run DD for sweeping, rock polish for outspeeding most of the tier, or a scarf for more immediate speed. Its movepool is also extremely diverse, with Strong Jaw it gets STAB on all the elemental fangs and crunch. Tyrantrum's main problem is that it's easily revenge killed when locked in Outrage, and that his typing is horrible defensively. I think once all the new powerful megas like Altaria, Gallade, and Sharpedo leave RU, Banded Tyrantrum will be able to shine.

(PS i'm new to the smogon forums, so if I formatted anything wrong please let me know!)

Tyrant's Wrath that's actually pretty impressive. I might have to try it out sometime. I would suggest using Ice Fang over Fire Fang though, to nail Gligar:

252+ Atk Choice Band Strong Jaw Tyrantrum Ice Fang vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Gligar: 312-368 (93.6 - 110.5%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO

Even though Outrage after SR has a really high chance of 2HKOing Gligar anyway.

I would honestly keep Fire Fang and replace EQ instead. Reason I say that is Fire Fang hits every Steel-type in the tier that wants to take Tyrantrym's Outrages / Stone Edges. I might be missing something that EQ hits, but I also don't find it very useful to lock in on a move that allows stuff like Moltres and Mega Pidgeot a free switch-in, even if they can't do much back to you.

Fire fang does hit Bronzong for pretty impressive damage if they're are levitate (which I believe is standard), and without it you're completely walled.
252 Atk Choice Band Strong Jaw Tyrantrum Fire Fang vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Bronzong: 196-232 (57.9 - 68.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Alrighty friends, tier shifts are in!

If you're too lazy to click the thread: here's what happened related to RU

Altaria and Beedrill moved up from PU/RU to UU (one less thing on the QB Ballot i guess)
Houndoom dropped from UU to RU (after what's literally years of waiting, people have been anticipating this since BW)
The Mighty Wobbuffet dropped from RU to NU
Sceptile Lopunny and Pidgeot are officially RU by usage now although that doesn't change anything

*every* Pokemon predicted to rise has stayed in the tier. No, Whimsicott, Alomomola, and Gligar are not leaving the tier! :]

Personally i'm pretty satisfied with how the tier shifts went, what do you all think?

I'd like to add that Dragalge also moved up to RU, not that it matters much.

IMO: RU is looking pretty awesome right now. I'm satisfied with how these tier shifts went.

Mega Lopunny and Mega Gallade and (most likely) Mega Houndoom will probably have to go tho and then the tier will be pretty swell for a while. :o

these tier shifts are going to be awesome for the time being. we all knew it was going to happen Houndoom has arrived. Really suprised Gligar, and Alomomola didn't leave us. Well i'm going to enjoy the tier, the way it is now before some of the rises (and mega gallade) get banned

Mega Houndoom dropping

(ty molk ily)

Anyway keeping Gligar and getting a new pokemon that is not Wobbuffet makes this probably the best tier shift in more than a year. Altaria leaving means one less thing to quickban but it was also our best Mega Houndoom check which will just wreak havoc. Houndoomnite will likely just get banned in the near future but regular houndoon will still be a fun toy n_n

But in all seriousness this is a very good drop for ru, it can be a great wall/stall breaker with taunt and wisp/nasty plot, but this is the set that I believe will perform the best, well besides mega lol:

Fuck delphox (Houndoom) @ Life Orb
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Sludge Bomb / Hidden Power [Grass]
- Fire Blast
- Nasty Plot

You might be thinking lol why are you running sludge bomb?!?!?! The answer is quite obvious, it lets houndoom beat aromatisse and mega audino, two likely counters for it and hits things like Emboar neutrally, something you cannot accomplish with hp grass. HP Grass still has merit for hitting gastrodon, the uncommon seismitoad, etc. but imo sludge bomb is the best move for it. Anyways that's pretty much all I can post for now and will come back and explain my opinion on how it performs in practice.
Flame Charge is also very viable and allows you to put in more work vs offensive teams.

Destiny Bond and Sucker Punch are viable options too. One lets you act as a martyr, the other is pretty solid priority backed by STAB and LO, provided you want to go mixed.

If there's anything that I've learned from Mega Houndoom's brief dominance in UU (basically before Hydreigon dropped), it's that it has a lot of support options that make good use of the 4th slot after NP/STABs. While Sludge Bomb was good in UU due to Florges being a complete defensive behemoth, the fairies here pale in comparison to its titanic special defense. Sludge Bomb doesn't get any noticable 2HKO on either Aromatisse or Mega Audino, and the latter runs Knock Off anyways, so it's complete set up bait. There are much better options such as Destiny Bond to take out shared counters, and Flame Charge which nullifies Scarfers as checks.

Even HP Grass is better to immediately threaten Gastrodon and Rhyperior. Don't be that guy running Sludge Bomb.

How in the fuck did bird Jesus get enough usage to be RU, EonX did you spam it to hell and back? Damn I was looking forward to using it in NU after the speed tiers dropped a peg, at least nasty pass to it will still be fun here.

Savior doge has finally dropped, does that include the mega stone? Even if no its still gonna be a lot of fun to play around with.

It does include mega stone, however, we were planning on doing another round of QBs after this one so the mega stone will probably have a very short life in RU, rip mega savior doge, you save the meta too well, welcome regular savior doge, we've been waiting n_n.

oh hey look we still haven't dropped chan and claydol and ambipom yet

also until mega savior dog gets banned sunny day >>> sludge bomb

On the behalf of UU, I'd like to congratulate RU on the arrival of Saviour Doge. May your Meloettas burn in sweet, sweet hellfire.
