What is Hydreigon's OU niche and is there a reason other than fairies as to why it dropped so far from gen V?
Its current niche is that of a wallbreaker. There's a set in the Smog Dex; it's something like Dark Pulse / Draco Meteor / Flash Cannon / Earth Power or Superpower with a Life Orb. Its viability dropped not only because of the speed creep, but also because of Fairy-Types. It was way easier for Hydreigon to deal with gen V Steel-types. In fact in gen V it was considered uncounterable. However, now Fairies can switch in on both of its otherwise devastating STABs. It's also why no one uses Scarf Hydreigon anymore.

Don't forget, Hydregion has extremely powerful dual STABs outside of Fairy types now that Steel no longer resists Dark, and it has amazing moves like Superpower, Flash Cannon, Fire Blast, U-Turn and so on. It's got pretty high potential for a wall breaker even with Fairy type Pokemon around.
The Speed creep did hurt it, but it's still pretty good with the right support.

EDIT: wow, this is the second time in two days Sanger has ninja'd me

Thank you for the answers. One last question -- while I don't want to butt in the suspect thread given my lack of experience, I noticed Mega Houndoom outspeeds Mega Metagross and OHKOs with Fire Blast. Would it be a consistently viable check, considering it gets easy switchins to MM's STABs?

Mega Houndoom is definitely a viable check of Mega Metagross. Though it being consistent is debatable, as most Megagross' carry Hammer Arm or Earthquake.

Well... Mega Venusaur and Rotom-W are still good counters thanks to they able to take a +6 aqua jet. Toxicroak, though a niche option, it is immune to aqua jet and can kill right back with gunk shot. It wont switch into a +6 play rough though.

Counters for mega diancie ?
It really depends on the moveset, for M-Diancies lacking HP fire (which most dont), ferrothorn is a good workaround. Scarf lando and Spdef Rachi are decent checks as well. On offensive teams, Scizor is a good choice. Just make sure to scout for coverage.

and for magnezone ?
Try to avoid double posting. Scarf Magnezone doesn't hit as hard as Raikou or Thundurus and Specs Magnezone lacks speed, so if you can defeat Thundurus / Raikou / Mega Manectric you can [most of the time] also beat Magnezone. Counters include: Mega Manectric, Gastrodon, Landorus-T, Hippowdon, Charizard-X and Lanturn, but there are more options than only these because pokemon like Heatran work too. They just don't like to switch in very often because they lack coverage and Specs Volt Switch hurts.

i have a team with MAltaria, Kyurem-B, starmie, talonflame, skarmory and conkeldurr. I noticed that it's weak to MegaDiancie,Azumarill and magneton, and maybe fairy types in general. What do you suggest ?

EQ on altaria is nasty for zone, jolly talonflame can outspeed scarfzone. Jirachi is a solid answer to mdiancia, i really don't see how azu is problematic since you have skarm and kube...
EDIT: Derp, I read magnezone instead of magneton, my bad.

He said his team was weak to magneton, not magnezone. Jolly talonflame can't outspeed scarf magneton, and it can hit 5/6 mons on his team super effectively. It can also trap ferro and jirachi.
Azumarill + magneton together completely rip through that team, so maybe replace conkeldurr with something like gastrodon.
