This thread is used to help teambuilding by giving players a quick way to choose checks and counters for the metagame's threats. Basically, a "check" as defined here is anything that reliably beats a threat, and they're separated in this list by whether or not they can switch in. The Pokemon will be listed by sprites rather than name for the sake of easy and quick reference, and they will be organized in descending order of viability ranking. As I want this to be a community-built resource, I encourage everyone to suggest changes as you see fit.

There are three categories that the checks will be divided into for each entry.
  • Guaranteed Switch-Ins (GSI): These Pokemon can switch into basically anything a threat can throw at them and win the matchup, within reason. This often means switching in on more than one set, for example Samurott can be a Swords Dance sweepers and a Life Orb Special wallbreaker, so lacks a guaranteed switch in. When evaluating which moves a check must be able to switch into, I have used what I think is good enough to be standard, but obviously that is subjective.

  • Situational Switch-Ins (SSI): These Pokemon can switch in safely under certain circumstances, but not always. Pokemon in this category can either switch safely into some variants of a threat but struggle against others, or they struggle with common coverage moves but can at least switch into a threat's STABs and other moves commonly used on switches (such as boosting moves and Knock Off) and win the matchup. This is somewhat of a "gray area" category, so there's a bit of flexibility here.

  • Non-Switch-Ins (NSI): These Pokemon cannot switch safely into a certain threat, generally because they are beaten by one of the threat's STABs, lose if they switch in on a boosting move, etc. Pokemon in this category can, however, defeat a threat in a 1-on-1 matchup. This includes faster revenge killers, as well as Pokemon that can take a single hit and KO back.

There might be exceptions to the above rules, so these will be handled on a case-by-case basis. My advice for using this compendium is to take a look at the RU Viability Rankings and make sure that you have an answer to the highest ranked threats first, since these are generally going to be some of the most dangerous and common threats and as such are high priority when teambuilding. Once you have those covered, then you can more comfortably prepare for the lower ranked threats. Also, don't worry about having a GSI for everything; that's basically impossible given how many threats there are an how hard it is to fully counter some of them. Instead, try to at least have an SSI for the top threats so that you'll have something that you can throw in front of them somewhat reliably. More offensive teams can probably make do with a couple of NSIs and proper offensive pressure. Bottom line is that you shouldn't get too carried away with trying to have perfect counters for everything, but this compendium should give you a wide range of checks to choose from so that you can build until you feel you can cover what you need to between team synergy and in-game decision making.

Remove Poliwrath from the first row on the durant one and move it to the second
252 Atk Choice Band Hustle Durant Thunder Fang vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 210-248 (54.6 - 64.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Remove both water/grounds from emboar's first row and move them to the second.
Druddigon can be added to the first row, though.

Remove everything from fletch's first row except from lanturn/rotom/omastar/drudd as they don't mind burns.
Add klinklang to the second row.

Bronzong is the only GSI to flygon as it can carry life orb iron tail, mola may be added as well.

Remove durant from the first row on glalie as it fears hidden power fire(not sure how much it does to escav tho but it proly should be put on the second row as well)

Remove steelix from escavalier's first row, as it can carry drill run and it 2hkoes

Remove emboar from houndoom's first how as it can carry hp water.

Wrath isn't a guaranteed switch into scrafty as it fears cb hjk(same can probably be said about the fairies as they fear cb poison jab) Hitmontop and vileplume can tank anything, and amoonguss is also a GSI

Nice ferroseed! xd

I believe drapion can 2hko rhyperior with aqua tail if rocks are up

That's it i think, sry if i missed anything

I think Jolteon should have Seismitoad and Quag (and probaby Gastrodon) dropped to SSI, since HP Grass is decently viable. Similarly, I think Mega Camerupt could be added to SSI since HP water isn't too horribly common - in terms of pure usage, HP ice (which is getting a ridiculous amount of usage in my opinion) and grass are significantly higher, and HP water doesn't even show up in commonly used moves, whereas Hyper Voice and Toxic do. I know HP Water is significantly more common in tournaments but LO HP water can fail to ohko max HP Camerupt

I also don't think Mega Steelix is a GSI for Piloswine, since adamant sets easily 3hko while lix fails to ohko before it can die, which makes me think it's a SSI. Further, it only takes a small amount of chip to put it into 2hko range of EQ.

I assume that Mola isn't listed as a switch in to band Granbull, but spdef Mola isn't 2hko'd after lefties + protect lefties unless they use thunder punch which can easily miss the 2hko itself, so I'd say it's a SSI? Unless I'm misunderstanding what these terms mean. Phys def mola isn't unviable at the very least.

Granbull isn't a GSI for Accelgor when LO can carry sludge bomb - wouldn't even say it's an SSI because any move + sludge KOs phys def which is the only defensive set it runs to my knowledge. Neither is phys def Aromatisse. Phys def Togetic is if rocks aren't up, though!

Mega nette can carry gunk shot, remove the fairies from the fist row and put them on the second

Golbat should be on accelgors first row

Mola should be on clawitzers first row too, and jolteon on the last

Rupt should be on granbulls second row, and not the last

Mola can be added to drudd's first row i believe

Diancie, Venusaur, and Manectric are updated. You can now post regarding them as well!

Diancie from SSI -> NSI for Medicham. Medicham almost always grabs the 2HKO with either HJK or Zen after rocks, and Diancie doesn't even have recovery to lean on. Wouldn't this be a NSI?

Aromatisse from SSI -> GSI for Medicham. In what case does Aromatisse not switch in to Medicham? Poison Jab is very rare as now most Medichams run either bullet punch or ice punch, and jolly poison jab barely nabs a 2HKO. Aroma can easily OHKO medicham with moonblast or wish if need be.
It takes a bunch from Zen Headbutt. Also, especially with hazards up, it can't check efficiently.

It depends really, Defensive Diancie can switch and eat up Zen Headbutts, given that Medicham is Choice Scarf. I'll discuss this with a few others a bit more and then decide.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Exploud Boomburst vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Diancie: 104-123 (34.2 - 40.4%) -- 41.1% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
Yes it can switch in once, but cannot do anything back in return. Safe to say it's a NSI (although personally it shouldnt be here, but TR set could beat it)

-1 252+ Atk Choice Band Tyrantrum Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mawile: 182-216 (59.8 - 71%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Yeah, I know that CB is a lot less common than scarf, but it is 2HKOed on the switch. Should that be SSI?

252+ SpA Life Orb Sharpedo Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Diancie: 221-265 (72.6 - 87.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Life Orb Sharpedo Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Diancie: 250-296 (82.2 - 97.3%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Yes, Physical sharpedo has a chance to OHKO after rocks, but special sharpedo, which has been gaining speed lately (pun intended) fails to KO even after rocks and is OHKOed back. I know that Diance will be left at cripplingly low health, but sharpedo is not a Pokemon that beat Diance reliably 1 v 1.

None of the Diancies are Max SpD+, if anything, they're +Defensive when bulky and therefore, Sharpedo can tackle it quite well.

mod edit: spd diancie is the best spread, diancie is mainly used to beat special attackers anyway, so running 0 spd on non-cm sets is very questionable. not that this thread is super accurate anyway when apparently gorugeist is an abomasnow switch-in and escavalier is a tyrantrum switch-in.

Umm... Mawile is currently listed as a GSI, and I was asking if it should be an SSI, which, imo, it should be. I don't know who mod-edited this, but they're right about the gourgiest thing. I'm assuming they're referencing a Tyrantrum locked into outrage, so that would be an SSI if so, right?
