Flying Qualifiers

This thread is for the qualifiers for the Flying gym. The date for the start of the qualifiers is March 19th, 2016. The format for the qualifiers will be singles. The examiner will be Dogfish44.

Each candidate for the gym will fight against the examiner, a user chosen by the gym committee. After the battles end, the candidate that the committee judges played best will become the new leader. Note that the committee has the right to choose no candidate, should they find nobody suitable.

Format said:
  • 3v3 Singles
    • Gym candidates may bring up to 3 extra Pokemon.
    • The examiner's Pokemon will be chosen from their pool. The same Pokemon will be brought to each match in the qualifiers.
  • The examiner will send out first.
  • 2 recoveries / 5 Chills per Pokemon
  • Items = On
  • Abilities = All
  • Switch = OK
  • Megas = 1
  • Subs = 3
  • ASB Arena
  • Soft DQ: 3 Days

Signups will be ongoing until the start of the qualifiers.

Candidates:
Texas Cloverleaf [Confirmed]

Done in collaboration with the Snowman. AKA I shouted at asked him politely for help!

Both of you:
  • Where were your Cawmodores and Skarmorys =|. Seriously, you both knew that MGlalie was almost certainly a threat...
  • Something was fundamentally off with "If Volt Switch, and you have not used baton pass, use Baton Pass (Once)" and whatever I'd C/P from Texas. If I'd switched out, you'd have Togekiss in chicken dancing. Togekiss is a bloody good chicken dancer. I wouldn't have bothered with this sub at all - both of you could've done with the extra damage.
  • Fuck Metronome.

Rainman Legends:
Weren't you supposed to be the easy one?
  • Your item call on Tomohawk was weird. Rare Candy managed an additional 11.25 HP of damage for you. Your item pool in general needs more things in it, but notably a Yache Berry or a Focus Band might've kept Tomohawk in play much longer - note how Texas taking the former was a tipping point? Looking at your profile, Rocky Helmet would've been my call - I'd have likely had to switch back to Cyclohm as I did vs Texas, although the matchups from there would be different.
  • The biggest error was in the Charizard vs MGlalie matchup. I'd have gone with Fire Spin ~ Fire Blast ~ Heat Wave, and subbed "IF Taunt AND this sub didn't activate on the action prior THEN Protect" in place of the Fire Spin Sub. The EN burn from Taunt ~ Taunt would've locked out Explosion + Explosion, forcing me to either resort to the weaker Explosion + Self-Destruct (Thus preventing a OHKO from Stratagem), or find another route. It'd also KO in the exact same timeframe.
  • Your final orders would've been better as Dazzling Gleam ~ Fly ~ Dazzling Gleam, for a 11.172% win rate (25.5 + 25.5 + 8 = 59 Damage, bang on the nose - Assuming my maths is right). Your orders, from what I see, had a 1% win Rate.

Texas Cloverleaf:
I guess you get comments as well.
  • Right from the get-go, Fairy Wind was a blunder. Togekiss was out to do damage, not to conserve EN. You'll note that not having that extra damage vs Cyclohm at that point meant that Tomohawk took a lot of extra damage. Sure, I could have Tormented - but that was subbable for - especially since you wasted a sub on Light Screen, on a mon who had autocrit. Priorities!
  • The switch to DNite... was awkward. Dragonite was very much a jack of all trades for this matchup - who basically ruined any realistic chance you had to handle Glalie. A switch to Togekiss might've been advisable, even if you would lose Togekiss, Kiss wasn't doing much vs the other two anyway. Dragonite coming out was you effectively forfeiting the matchups game - Focus Band Dragonite was not winning any matchups here, it was just going to stall for time. The only thing which Dragonite would've realistically been able to do would be to throw the matchups off - which it did... by removing your Togekiss-Cyclohm matchup.
  • Dragonite's sub for Torment should've been done in the much more general case - why sub for an A2 Torment, and let me sneak in a free action A3?
  • I'd need to find precedent, but I'm fairly sure that (in hindsight) Cooldown is ignored when it comes to Torment (We ignore Cooldown for Consecutive EN). So the Superpower + Giga Impact after Superpower + Double-Edge should've resulted in Struggle. Which would make things... different. Less SR, but a Stratagem with a shitton more HP.
  • I do wish you hadn't typed 'Forfeit' in long-form for that final round. Sure you weren't in the lead, but you could've gone for a Thunder Wave, tried to use Counter and Endure to provide an actual opposition? Or at least tried to stall.
Also Counter should not be in your 'Other' moves, it's a Physical Attack -_-

---

You both made this difficult. I have to choose between the candidate I trust to be consistent, and the candidate I trust to be fun to play against. I've had a lot to consider - various options and paths from mistakes. I think it should go without saying that should you ever run for another gym, then the candidate you run against will be in for a rough time - it's very rare to have analysis of errors in this much detail.

With that said, my choice for the Flying Gym leadership is Rainman Legends. Please send us an arena draft asap!
