Gen VII: Pokemon Sun and Moon Discussion MKII

so I'm assuming lorewise the Fire/Ghost Marowak is supposed to represent one who gave into their rage over losing their mom instead of sadness.

Dark Meowth now has me curious what may happen to the guy we love to hate in the anime though.... also what teh Persian stage will be like to boot.

I'm excited for the Ghost/Ground and Exeggecutor because they're one of the few Alola forms that aren't bloody SR weak. I mean seriously Stealth Rocks will kill these Pokemon forms or they have bad typings like Ice Steel. :( It's going to be so weird seeing a Marowak being weak to SR though real talk. Most of these forms didn't have recovery back at their original form so them being able to regenerate wouldn't make much sense.

Ok but not everything has to be viewed through a competitive lens. And anyway, there are plenty of Pokemon who function with a weakness to SR in all tiers (not every Pokemon can or will end up in OU).

The best example being everyone's favorite pyromaniac raptor: Talonflame.

Honestly though: I don't see many Alola Forms travelling up from their current tiers unless they get a good typing/ability. Or the stats change.

I was thinking about an adaptation depending on the move (but this is plain speculation, maybe it has even been confirmed otherwise, I don't know at all). For example, if you have Flamethrower, you have a special Z-move, with Fire punch, a physical one, and with will-o-wisp, a status one.

That would be a great way for it to work for physical/special moves. Not sure about status-based z-moves.

Anyway, glad to see even more Alolan formes.
Dark-typed Persian will probably be a cool design and Ghost/Fire are really nice STABs for Marowak.
Once again they are Gen 1 Pokemon. . I'm fully expecting Alolan Magikarp/Gyarados now.

I'm not sure what to make of the new Water pokemon.
If it's a forme change is it in-battle like Aegislash or out-of-battle like Rotom?
If it's the latter it's basically reversible evolution but if it's the former it could be a unique mechanic.

I love everything, once again. The school of fish Pokemon and Fire/Ghost Marowak are the best to me though.

Team Skull, although a silly name, looks really cool. I like the pirate/gangster theme.

This is speculation, but I have a feeling they in some way want to steal the island guardians and sell them for profit. If they are pirates this would make sense. Or maybe they are smuggling out rare Pokemon and selling them to fund whatever their evil plot is.

Bah, figures I would discover the new news right as I'm getting ready for work. Guess I'll throw in my two cents quickly.

Sunabaa/Shirodesuna: I didn't care for the sand castles at first, but they've quickly grown on me. Like others have pointed out, the ghost typing makes the inanimate object design work out well; it dodges the Vanilluxe bullet for sure, which is a plus. The shovel is gonna bug the crap out of me though

Nuikoguma: I don't care for Bewear's design to begin with, so maybe I'm just biased, but baby bear looks basically the exact same as Bewear, just on all fours instead of just its hind legs, which makes me dislike it for the same reasons why I dislike Klink and its evolutions. Not saying that every evolutionary stage should be Remoraid --> Octillery tier different, but don't make it look like the exact Pokemon with a slight tweak or stance either.

Yowashi: I was geared up to roast this thing's evolution...until I found out it was actually a form change caused by several Yowashi forming a school, which makes a helluva lot more sense and makes me like the design a lot more; I certainly wouldn't want to mess with a monster-submarine fish, and I'm sure Yowashi predators don't either. Definitely an interesting and original concept. It'll be interesting to see how its form change works in battle.

Alola Meowth/Marowak: No surprise to see these two with Alola forms, with Meowth being shown as an Alola-native species early in SuMo's reveal and Marowak being revealed as Captian Kiawe's main Pokemon. Both designs are cool, and Alola Marowak's homage to the Pokemon Tower ghost is pretty cool too. I'm sorta bothered by Marowak-A's official artwork basically being a photoshopped version of the original though.

Team Skull: Kinda glad to see the villainous team trope return for this generation honestly; with gyms getting a makeover, it's still nice to see some familiarity, and it'll help with transitioning if GF decides to continue with dropping the gym trope and eventually the villainous teams in future generations. I just hope GF doesn't screw them up as badly as they did with a Team Flare. Judging from first impressions, they seem more like a Rocket-style syndicate, which could be a plus.

I'm pretty sure they won't give Alola forms to pokemon that have a mega evolution. I'm okay with that, not everyone needs a mega.

Jesús Christ, are people still obsessed with the Cubone thing from gen1?

There are ghost type mons that weren't dead stuff, ghastly and Gengar go from sentient gas into living shadow, mismagius and misdreavous are their own entity, Bannette is the first true possessed entity, dusclops is just like misdreavous, Sableye is a critter that fears of minerals on a very dark environment, drifblim is its own entity despite looking like a Ballon, spiritomb is the first mon referenced to be something else, Golurk is a golem, jellicent is its own thing, chandelure line are a bunch of predators that use their object like psyche to feed on the life energy of others, Aegislash is apparently a possessed sword that has genders, gourgeist is a jack o lantern with interesting habits and trevenant might be stretching it since Ents and sentient trees or possessed trees actually exist as their own things in folklore.

Ghost never meant dead.

Remember the dex outright states 3 things about Marowak, Cubone becomes strong through the bond with its trainer and evolves, Marowak has a secret bone yard where he gets his weapons, THE SPECIES WAS WEAK AND MEEK BEFORE THEY ADAPTED TO USE BONES, this changed them to vicious fighters and changed their behavior, it's not out of the realm of possibility that the base meek Marowak species in a stressful environment developed the ghost type as a way to survive a predator,

Ghost doesn't mean dead dude, nor this is a hint toward the Sephiroth complex people seem to hold on this species, it's perfectly normal for the Marowak line.

I do hope Alolan Persian gets another type in addition to Dark. We already have Liepard, which basically amounts to a Dark-type Persian.

Despite these being "Alolan" forms, I can't help but wonder if the idea is to retroactively add more type variety to the Kanto Pokédex. Prior to Sun/Moon, the fully-evolved Pokémon in the first 151 included just 5 Ice-types, 3 Fairy-types, 1 Steel-type, 1 Ghost-type, 1-Dragon type, and 0 Dark-types. Now we have at least 2 more Ice-types, 1 more Fairy-type, 1 more Steel-type, 1 more Ghost-type, 1 more Dragon-type, and—assuming Alolan Persian exists and is Dark-type—1 Dark-type.

If this were actually the goal, then the important thing would be to get rid of a lot of the Water-types, replacing them with more interesting versions. I guess we'll see if that actually happens. Here's hoping for some of the Alolan Pokémon to be Ground-type; Sandslash and Marowak are both out.

I am not expecting an Alolan form of any Pokémon that has a Mega Evolution.

Now that I wrote what I thought about the pokes now I would like to give a little though of today's other things leak too.

Team Skull, usually evil teams name don't share name with what they do save for Aqua and Magma but If team Skull had something to do with its name on a island region based it would be related to piracy. (Btw I just noticed by rewatching that image a grunt has a Jolly roger on its cloth...that makes even more sense now...)

What do pirates do? Being carefree and taking all the valuable bounty. Sun/Moon, day and night, a time of the day...sun dial and moon dial (to summon the cover legendary) maybe?

Shirodesuna is seen in the image with a Pikachu and the way the situation looks it may get arena trap but knowing GF it might not take it with a grain of sand (salt) :D

Edit: Shirodesuna weights 250kg with 1.3 m of height that's a lot for a sand castle.

Edit 2: Speaking of sand castles Serebi just updated info about them: "Sunabaa is a grudge that dwells inside a pile of sand that turns into a Pokemon. Truly a terrifying creature
Shirodesuna steals the life force from other Pokemon. Those Pokemon's grudges turn into a new Sunaba"

Spiritomb is supposed to be an amalgamation of 108 (presumably deceased and human) souls, Yamask used to be human, Phantump is said to be a stump possessed by the soul of a dead child, and our new sand pile friend is said to kill people and turn them into more sand piles.

But it does not strictly mean "dead". Most ghosts are either "alive inanimate objects" or "related to death".

I still suspect Marowak's ghost typing must be some kind of spirit channeling to power up its bone club.

I don't know if I can buy Team Skull. The leader looks kinda young and not as "battle-worn" as the other ones - if that makes sense. Also his second-in-command has a look on her face if she doesn't really care about anything? I really hope they will be trying to pull something reaaaaally despicable so I'll end up "Wow, F these guys!".

wow. What a bunch of info we have here

I love all the corocoro leaks. A sandcastle ghost-ground type pokemon it's silly but i love it. I am already hearing those genwunners screams.

Love the concept of Alola gen 1 pokemons but i wonder what would be the changes to the breeding mechanics if you match an Alola pokemon with an original Kanto pokemon

I was forgetting the cofragrigus line, but yes, up to spiritomb no ghost type was stated by the dex to be part of the dead.

Yamask is supposed to be human, phantump is supposed to be a dead child and the weird reproductive ways of sandcastle are among the very few examples that challenge your suspension of disbelief, but outright stating ghost means dead when pretty much only 7 out of the entire ghost type have folklore tied to that is stretching the realm of headcanon. Heck Trevenant can be attributed to at least 8 sources of living trees and so can phantump when a forest spirit inhabits a tree an grow along it or it is its own life form.

Honestly if people didn't expect one derped up Pokemon this gen then these people don't know GameFreak. Just like Chandelure I can imagine it being a complete badass Pokemon if it has good stats.

It's possible that they're just a street gang with a pirate theme, so them being young would make sense. That's all speculation, of course. But it is something different, a band of rogue teenagers/young adults.

Alolan Pokemon are Kanto-exclusive so far, which I think is good if they choose to retcon the weaker ones. I wonder if Alolan Marowak can use Thick Club?

Sand Castle mon is creative while also being dark and sinister, and the school of fish is pretty nice.

I'm overall liking the selection of Pokemon we have this gen. It's a lot of creative designs overall and the variety is going to be great! My main gripe with this new batch is the fact that they're reusing some of type combinations (Fire / Ghost from my favorite line, Ground / Ghost, Water / Psychic twice already?). I know it's inevitable that they reuse types, but very specific type combinations being reused... idk, ruins the iconic lines that starred those types.
