Say hello to the Mata Mata Turtle, friends. Or, in English, the Kill Turtle. While IRL this thing snaps up prey by swallowing them whole with its vacuum like mouth, Tortonator hunts by blowing them to bits with its Shell traps!

Turtonator seems cool! Really liking these Alola Pokemon and how perfectly they fit their environment! Fire/Dragon is a good typing that has not been previously seen on restricted Pokemon, so I welcome it - should make a good partner to Popplio for those who go that route.

Komala knowing Rapid Spin is very interesting, here's hoping it gets Slack Off or some other recovery. Notably Comatose means that it won't be able to be hit by Toxic or Burn, so that's a boon to its longevity.

I didn't expect too much from this reveal given the video earlier this month AND CoroCoro, so I'm satisfied.

I've rewatched the Battle Royale footage and translated the moves.

Pikachu knows Slam, Electro Ball, Spark and Thunder Wave.
Rockruff knows Tackle, Stealth Rock, Rock Tomb and Bite.
Litten knows Fire Fang.
Popplio knows Bubble Beam.
Mimikyu knows Shadow Sneak and Feint Attack.
Togedemaru knows Tackle, Discharge and Spark.
Komala knows Slam, Swallow and Rapid Spin.
Very interesting. So Komala probably gets Stockpile as well to help it be bulky while Spinning. Litten learning Fire Fang could hint at it being a physical attacker (which we figured already).

Other than that nothing unusual in the moves.

Between Drampa, Exeggutor, & Turtonator, GF are playing pretty loosely with the Dragon tropes that were common in the early gens. I like that they're making the niche more flexible (as they did in XY, and with Druddigon I suppose) and less prone to being clearly rare, clearly lategame and clearly very powerful.

Tbh, I don't like Turtonator. I'm happy that we got another Dragon/Fire but it just looks so ugly. Shell Trap could be interesting though.

For me, the dullness of the colors really hurts it. I can imagine this thing potentially looking awesome with a sharper-colored Gen IV-type sprite.

Sorry for posting again so soon: but i didnt really catch most of the battle royal and was wondering: what turn did Pikachu use the Z-Move? It was probably fairly early on, so i'm guessing there isnt any kinda hoop to jump through to use it in battle.

Very first attack. Pikachu with Z-Move and Litten with Fire Fang double-target Rowlet for the 2HKO iirc.

I'm really looking forward to uncovering the stats of Tortunator, so it will be somewhat ok-ish to use because Shell Trap sounds fun to use. (Specially defensive so opponents have to hit it on the physical side)
Also bonus points for that awesome name. Gonna nickname mine "Arny" in the playthrough.

Shell Trap sounds like some kind of hybrid between Spiky Shield and Powder.

Or maybe... a reverse Counter. ("Reverse" in that you have to use it first to work)

Evil Game Freak, having a defensive Pokemon use Rapid Spin on it for us to not know whether it's fixed damage or not!

So wait, are there two Z-moves for each type? The Z-move shown on the stream has different animation than the animation of Gigavolt Havoc. Perhaps there's one physical and one special Z-Move for each type.

Too bad he's a beauty compared to Turtonator. Look at those jaw muscles, and those thick legs! They took an incredibly cool creature, dropped him from the tip of the ugly tree, and the poor thing hit every branch on the way down. Maybe his evolved form will look somewhat cooler, and he'll at least do well in battle.

Say what you want about Barbaracle, but once he gets a Shell Smash or two up, he's amazing!

Holy shit! Coming back from my summer final, and I see a fucking mata mata! That's a brilliant retake on a fire turtle.

Speaking of that turtle, I remember posting one for my CAP 20 design before I gave up. That CAP turned out to be Naviathan, which was loosely inspired by terrapins.

I figured Pikachu used a normal type Z move since it was carrying slam but it being the physical version makes sense.
According to serebii it's the normal type z move named Hyper sprint attack
