Housekeeping:
- I will do my best to track Sun/Moon specifics, so please include this in your post so that I can map it accordingly.
- I will be playing Moon for the run-through.
- I hate spoilers lol. I'll include a brief summary of each location however will hide it to help those who don't want too much about any major events.

TL;DR? As much detail as possible will be added. Spoiler tab will contain information on battles, etc. Be warned.

Island 1: Melemele Island

Location: Route 1​

First visit is guided by the Professor. No interaction.

Points of interest: TBC

Items: (After receiving start) 10x pokeball, 5 potions. Potion (located NW corner of the map). Antidote (just after encountering the kid telling you about the party in Iki town, continue right on to the elevated area), potion (located north of antidote). Paralyze heal (west of entry to Iki town -- useful to heal from the Pichu in this area)

After battle, you can enter the "Care" menu where you can brush, feed, etc. Interesting as you can use the medicine to heal status conditions.

Hau'oli Outskirts
Pokemon Centre - no hidden items
Training school:
Exp Share, Potion (northern area of car park). Quick claw (Girl inside building near TV), TM01 Workup (4th trainer)

Location: Iki Town​

Nothing really happens on first visit. No items or NPC interactions outside of general chit-chat. Up on the highest level of the town there is a house on the left that is blocked [Re-visit]. After the events on the "Mahalo trail" you return here and //finally// receive your starter and as you head back home, you encounter your rival, Hau -- who surprisingly chooses a pokemon that isn't super effective against you!

Location: Mahalo Trail​

Standard follow-through up the hill where you encounter a nice cut-scene, save the day and meet the lady in white (Lillie) from the opening cut-scene.

Beachfront​
Nothing much here for now

Shopping district​
Hau makes an appearance. There are plenty of these little gates that allow you to go through areas -- keep your eyes peeled. Team skull gets a mention
Points of interest: Clothing store, Salon (Bonfire of the vanities i hear you scream!) Battle Buffet (cannot enter as yet -- late game maybe?) Pokecentre: Girl wants to see a drifloon and will pay you to show her one, Move deleter (RHS).

Goal is the pokemon centre, from here you can access Verdant Cavern.

Few trainers, nothing too exciting (yet), good opportunity to add some diversity to your party.

Let the hunger games begin! Fight your way through the cavern (pokemon can be caught once completed). Some unexpected surprises await! Recommend to collect Brick break before the trial.

Points of interest: So not really a POI BUT -- the lady at the entrance will heal you, for free, forever. I spent a deal of time here grinding through some level up against the Komala, Pikipek, Paras, etc. Rinse and repeat.

It would be huge if this worked for all gifts. Can you check the Ash-Greninja from Mystery Gift? And Type: Null, once you get there?
 
I can confirm that Synchronize works for both Cosmog and Type: Null, which would indicate it does work for all gifts. Dunno about Ash-Greninja - I reset for that without thinking about Synchronize, and after settling in for some misery wound up getting Naive on the second reset anyway.

Also: Necrozma isn't considered an Ultra Beast for purposes of Beast Ball catch rate bonuses, sadly.

Also also: My first ever SOS-chaining attempt got me a shiny Exeggcute with four flawless IVs. This didn't take hours or anything; it was a very reasonable length of time. Either I'm lucky as all hell or the shiny rate in mature chains is, uh, substantial.

Oh, right, here's an early-game, non-spoiler useful discovery, if you want to get through quickly:

Wishiwashi is completely broken. When the tiering thread happens, this is a shoo-in for top. I'd seriously argue for putting a separate Wishiwashi Tier on top of the ranking.

Schooling looks real bad on paper, but the resources it wants line up just perfectly with its availability window. You get a lot of Rare Candies early in Sun/Moon and can Candy Wishiwashi up to 20 as soon as you catch the first one you encounter at Brooklet Hill. Once you do this, you have a mon with 50/130/135 defenses and 140/140 mixed offenses at a point in the game when nothing else available to you can come close to competing with it. Schooling will fuck you under 25% HP... but you'll never get below 25% HP, realistically, because Wishiwashi-School's bulk is absolutely unreal. Weaknesses don't even matter for most of the game. About the only concession Schooling forces from you is that you need to keep topping up Wishiwashi's tank with cheap low-grade healing items (the terrible HP stat actually helps here - a stack of Potions is fine) because chip damage impairs your ability to avoid crossing the 25% line.

But here's what you get in return: the Scald TM is obtained in the same area where you find Wishiwashi, and it gives you an 80 BP STAB off of a SpA score none of your other mons can touch.

It's a similar sort of deal to RBY Nidoking, where it's a little resource-intensive right after you get it (don't even try to level Wishiwashi up to 20 "honestly") but it offers ridiculous amounts of return on investment throughout the entire game in exchange for those resources. From the moment it becomes available early on all the way to the final bosses, Wishiwashi is a monster. That Scald is just unwholesome. You take a pittance from just about everything and OHKO in return. Your movepool is kinda barren besides, but that doesn't even matter. You OHKO resistances. The game isn't designed in a way that accommodates this thing; it's way too effective, way too early, and it completely destroys the power curve.

Oh, and it's in a really good experience group, just because apparently Game Freak thought it needed to be that little bit better! So in addition to coming really early with an absolutely ludicrous stat spread and a solid STAB to abuse those stats with... it's also going to outlevel the rest of your team just by virtue of that experience curve. And of course getting more levels just makes Wishiwashi even bulkier, and supplies you with even more brute force. So there's a nice snowball effect here - it takes a handful of Rare Candies to skip the crap stage early on, and then it's a broken monstrosity that somehow gets more broken with each battle.

So, uh, yeah: that's a thing. If you want a reasonable challenge, don't use it. If you want to get through the game as brutally efficiently as possible, don't sleep on it.

Don't forget that you get the Rest TM and the Sleep Talk TM shortly after it becomes obtainable.
I've used RestTalk Wishiwashi for my ingame run and that thing annihilated everything in its path.
 
I've heard conflicting reports on old 3DS vs New 3DS performance. I'm aware Sun and Moon forces the 3DS to reboot a la Smash Bros to free up extra RAM which leads to a much longer starting time, but is anything else changed? Do we have any empirical testing of old vs new 3ds battle performance wise? What about menu performance? The demo Pokemon menu felt like it was running at a slower pace than the snappy XYORAS one on an old 3ds. Does the new 3ds feel any different?
 
Can anyone tell me whch kind ok Pokémon is better in game: bulky or fast Pokémon? Is speed really that nessicary this generation, in game, with all these bulky Pokémon that were introduced?

Honestly most pokes in Alola are slow, so any "kinda fast" will be enough. The thing is, you don NEED super fast pokes this time ingame.

AFAIK both have performance issues but mainly at Totem and Double Battles... I am worried about how much will the FPS drop in the Old 3DS at Doubles, but thus far it is not game breaking.
 
How is it that other companies can make games for the 3DS that run well in 3-D with multiple models on the screen, but GameFreak can't even create a 2-D game with 6 models (2 trainers and 4 Pokémon) on the screen at once without framerate drops?

Pokemon models are significantly more complex than any other game on the 3DS, even if it doesn't look like it.
 
Magneton evolves into Magnezone at the Vast Poni Canyon for those wondering, it was quite frustrating to find out the location (I kept trying the power plant and nearby area). Good thing Magneton is decent and you get the Eviolite relatively early on. I just forgot where...

Another mid-game nuke besides Wishiwashi is Marowak if you can find a Thick Club. I got one by using a fainted Compoundeyes Butterfree as the lead and catching a few Cubone, if they haven't changed things the chance is 1 in 5. Its best STAB before late in the game is Flame Charge (afaik Trollfreak made it learn its best ghost STAB 1 level before it evolves and put the move relearner right at the end, lol) but it can compensate using the huge coverage from Bonemerang, Brick Break and Stone Edge. Also Flame Charge is really nifty against everything that doesn't threaten Marowak-A, because of its side effect.

Tauros can also be gotten rather early and its high speed + early access to Z-Moves and Work Up can make it sweep teams, although it lacks the coverage of Marowak.

The differences are noticeable but minimal. If you want an excuse to upgrade, then go ahead; it really depends on how much you value minor performance differences. I actually went out and bought a N3DSXL yesterday after watching those videos. I suggest making your decision today though, because system transfer is a pain in the ass.

EDIT:

GameXplain also complains about performance issues on the o3DS during double battles. Starting at 10 minutes exactly if you want to minimize spoilers. They recommend playing on the N3DS to reduce performance issues.

You mean, NPC trades? Of course. A lot. I always talk to all the NPC in every town and there are like 5-6 in game trades that i remember. One gives you a Graveler i think so you can get alolan Golem.

PS: I really want an "in game tier" for Sun and Moon. If someone wants to do it i will help a lot.

Has anyone documented the clothing options for both genders? I've seen the hair options on Reddit but no clothes.....I pick up my copy of Moon in about 14 hours and I would love to know who I should pick :( They're not on Serebii yet
 
Wondering if anyone knows the hour trigger for day/night.

I'm at 10:36 pm in Sun right now and it's day, since I'm finding Yungoos on Route 1.
