(Little) Things that annoy you in Pokémon

The fact that you can't do Contests online.

Seriously, that was such a wasted opportunity. Competitive Contests would've been an entire different class of playing Pokémon. Not to mention fun.

Wow, I hadn't even thought of that as a possibility! What a missed opportunity. Being able to compete in contests online against real people would have been so legit. I mean, they're fine as they are, but there would be a whole nother meta game surrounding it. I'm sure much much less popular than battling, but cool nonetheless. And I have a feeling contests won't be coming back. Even if they do in the inevitable DPP remakes, they will probs be in the DPP contest format, which I think is slightly inferior to RSE contests.

Move Tutors in ORAS are a rip-off - it took me 60 battle points just for the movesets of my Gallade-M/Tornadus-T/Darmanitan (two Knock Offs, one Zen Headbutt, one Heat Wave and one Superpower). And that's without the Assault Vest and Life Orb, which are another 96 points combined.

So basically, 156 points just to get the team set up.

If you thought that was a rip-off, try the Gen 4 Battle Facility shops. 48 BP for an evolution item? TM (only 1 use) costs up to 80 BP. Grind, my friend, grind.

Something I hate is how some split evo lines like the Poliwag and Wurmple line had one evolution get stat buffs (Poliwrath, Beautifly) but not the other (Politoed, Dustox). I feel that making one Pokemon in these split evolution lines numerically better than the other shifts the players interest towards that pokemon, rather than giving both a fair chance..

I know it's not Gen 6, but Gen 7 I'm talking about, but what bothers me is the consensus about what SM is inspired by - they say it's aping Youkai Watch for having exactly one thing that's inspired by the game (Rotom Dex to Whisper) and one that's vaguely resembling it (no, Z-Rings are not even remotely similar to Youkai Watches and physical toys aren't exactly a thing new to Youkai Watch), but the extremely blatant references to Dragon Ball Z and other shonen anime goes right over people's heads (Visible Battle Auras? New threats with absurdly powerful feats? Zygarde being literally Cell? Z-MOVES?).

Let me just say this one:

Rising Star Paulette.

Screw you and your Level 19 Axew that spams Dragon Rage, which will 2HKO anything on your team not named Snorlax. The only reason I beat it at all was by spamming Super Potions and walling it to death with Poison Powder.

Er, you can DexNav Life Orb from wild Absol...

Still, the fact they cost battle points rather than certain color shards like they did in B2/W2 does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity. I'm more annoyed by the Battle Tower model and tease of the Battle Frontier coming soon when in reality it's never coming.

1. A lot of the new Pokemon (mainly the good ones, imagine that) have very low encounter rates. Minior, Mimikyu, and any Water-type Pokemon you can only get from fishing that isn't Magikarp.

2. Speaking of fishing, did you really have to make the fishing rod as useless as the Old Rod? I understand wanting only one fishing rod but why does every fishing spot have to have Magikarp as the most likely encounter and anything else a 1% (which jumps to a whopping 10% for special fishing spots)? You could expand on the fishing mechanic a bit, like give us a Lure Box and make different lures have different effects while fishing.

3. One last note on Minior: it knows self-destruct and I think has a low catch rate. Good luck catcing it, cause outside of a Master Ball that's the only way you're getting one (or, you now, GTS)!

Events. Or more specifically, Pokémon that can only be obtained through them.

It's not like they're relevant even if you do get them, because they're banned from VGC and the battle facilities. Their only purpose is to fill up the Pokédex-- or, in the case of people who don't get them, to leave a permanent hole there. Without hacking, I'll never be able to get Celebi on my copy of SoulSilver, all because I didn't go to some GameStop 5 years ago. It's really annoying for people who actually want to complete the Pokédex, like me.

Granted, GF has been taking a step forward in that Deoxys can now be captured without the need for an event. The other stuff, though, including Mew and every other 100/100/100/100/100/100 mon, is still off limits to all people but those who were able to access this arbitrary event.

Ash-Greninja. Please just stop. I'll quote my post from the Unpopular Opinions thread here:

I really, really hate Greninja. It is my least favorite Pokémon. Why?

It got so much attention compared to the other two starters, as shown in both its battling capabilities and the attention GF has given it in terms of marketing. That really bothers me because no starter is supposed to be "better" than the other two.
I hate Ash-Greninja even more than its base form for the same reasons: big stat/Water Shuriken buff, tons of marketing, even the name is tied into Ash (who doesn't belong in the cartridge games imo), but worst of all, no sign of any similar buff for the other two Kalos starters. Hopefully GF will pull a Blaziken, but that actually looks doubtful because unlike Mega Evolutions, this form is exclusive to Greninja so far.

The only good thing that's come from it so far imo is the fact that it gives me an excuse to use Accelgor in OU. I like Accelgor.

You want them to ruin all three Kalos starters, instead of just one? "Ash-Greninja" and anything else that resembles the "synchro" garbage has no place in the games. It's all-out fucking retarded and so lame it makes Mega Evolution look respectable in comparison.

How is Synchro Evolution "bad" anyway? Do you not like the design, or the way it also plays a heavy role in the anime? Personally, I don't mind it because it does something we haven't seen before in powering up a move. Given that the other two Kalos starters have moves that are pretty much* exclusive to them, there's some potential for creativity. Mystical Fire is a really cool move, but a lack of power sets it back. Spiky Shield is also powerful, but Chesnaught doesn't have the typing to take hits. Imagine what they could make out of these two moves!

*Mystical Fire can also be learned by Mismagius, and both Maractus and Cacturne get Spiky Shield; Water Shuriken is learned by Accelgor. None of them can really use the moves effectively, though.

Well, for me there's a couple of reasons I dislike it. First off, there is only one instance of it. If there were more, it would be more acceptable to me. Think about if they only made mega charizard. No other Megas. Secondly, and most importantly, it's ash greninja. He can be in the anime or whatever, but I consider (and it's official) that ash does not exist in the same universe as the pokemon games, so it bugs me that some aspect of him has crept into the game. They need to be kept apart. Finally, I really just don't like the design.

Just found out that apparently they got rid of the Move Tutors for Sun and Moon. RIP so many movesets. Now I have to teach any moves I want to teach to a given Pokémon before transferring them over, and I'll have to stick to certain movesets (unless the move reminders can reteach them now), or they'll not be as good. Hard decision regarding Metagross: Iron Head or Meteor Smash?

But Leech Life is now better than X-Scissor!

GF takes Levitate away from Gengar and then proceeds to have one that's literally walking on air show up during a story event.

WTF?!!! They could have chosen a better ability to give to Gengar! Why did they do that?!

Well, I guess that there is no point in breeding additional Gastly. Wonder if mine would keep his ability if traded over?

Edit: They also give IMO inferior abilities to the Legendary Beasts, before they even released them!

They remove the move tutors at the start of every new generation, aside from the specific ones. (Draco Meteor, Pledges, Elemental beams, Relic Song/Secret Sword, and now Dragon Ascent) On the plus side, Volt Tackle can now be tutored so any Pikachu can use Catastropika.

And I believe that was the point with Gengar and the Beasts, to nerf them. (though it's moot point with the latter, given we never got a chance to use them with their previous hidden abilities) Gengar's ability in Sun/Moon is Cursed Body, and will be such regardless of where it came from. (Gastly and Haunter keep Levitate, though)

The worst part about this imo is being able to encounter beasts with Volt Absorb/Flash Fire/Water Absorb (iirc) in the Battle Maison, but not being able to capture them for yourself...

On the upside, Inner Focus is definitely helpful in Doubles, the format GF seems to be promoting (think Fake Out spam).

I know this is "little" things that annoy you, but honestly, nearly everything about Sun and Moon have been really disappointing for me so far, although to be fair, I have not completed a full play through of the game. The entire beginning island is an absolute train wreck. There is absolutely no freedom, there are road blocks everywhere. Everywhere. I mean, yeah Pokemon games are pretty linear, but his is a whole new level. Also, I thought the rotom-dex would be cool, but it's extremely annoying. The ridiculous amount of cutscenes that don't just plague the first island, they absolutely dominate it. Yeah, ok, story is important and so is tutorial for new players, but these games are structured to the point where they do not even seem like Pokemon games to me. I mean, why are there quest markers? Pokemon is supposed to be a psuedo open world game, Sun and Moon seem entirely linear. When I play a new Pokemon game, I don't want 45 minutes out of the first hour to be cutscenes. The trial system also has no business replacing gyms. And I hear the postgame is weak and short, though I will have to determine that for myself when I get there. I apologize for this short rant, but Sun and Moon has let me down sooo much I can't not verbalize it. I really hope they go back to the traditional system after this, but it will remain to be seen.

The quest markers are for if you get lost, which I know has happened to a number of people who aren't new to Pokémon. If anything it's horribly implemented because there's no indication of where to go if the marker isn't on the minimap screen and the map isn't exactly high res.

There are actually a couple side areas on the first island that are totally optional and easily missed, such as that cave you enter from the yellow flower meadow and that cave/canyon near Kukui's lab you can only enter via Tauros.

I found Dextom easy to ignore since his dialogue is on the bottom screen and thus not in-your-face. The only time he irritated me was when I wanted to open the map but couldn't because he was talking.

The lack of cutscene skipping in SM is dumb. It's a basic convenience provided by pretty much every other high-profile game in existence and you're not losing anything from its inclusion.

Fuck, guess I'm not transferring Gengster, or ever using Gengar again. And to think he is one of my favorite Pokémon! And was nerving Gengar even that necessary? I mean, his ability is now rather worthless (unless he can recover HP through something like Leech Life. I mean, his defenses are paper thin)!!! I mean, even if he triggers his ability, it's pretty situational. Maybe shutting down a sweep I guess. But nowhere as useful as switching into Ground type moves and being able to use him with Earthquake.

Apparently it was. Yet it's but a shadow compared to Talonflame's plummet, what with Gale Wings now only activating while at full HP, and Gengar's Special Attack and Speed are still as good as ever.

TBF, it really only hurts Gengar's switch-in opportunities. Most Pokemon that would use ground attacks were physical attackers and they could easily take down Gengar assuming they aren't choiced into Earthquake and they could survive a hit from it.

And on the other side now with Tapu Lele it's immune to one of its biggest weaknesses - Sucker Punch - and wouldn't be if it still had Levitate. Gengar can now take advantage of the terrain abilities as well as remove Toxic Spikes.
