Online Competition Tiny Tourney [NOW ON SHOWDOWN]

I set up a friendly competition on BS called tiny tourney trial run.
I havent done a friendly comp before so i dont know what to expect, hopefully the 3'3" rule will be respected.

Looks like a fun competition! What do you guys think about perish trap? The format lacks a lot of strong nuke and support options that would otherwise give it issues, and a lot of the format will be bulky anyways (P2/Eviolite mons).

I was thinking of something like this:

Dugtrio @ Groundium Z
Ability: Arena Trap
Level: 50
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Substitute
- Protect

Azumarill @ Mental Herb
Ability: Sap Sipper
Level: 50
- Scald
- Perish Song
- Encore
- Protect

Gothorita @ Eviolite
Ability: Shadow Tag
Level: 50
- Psychic
- Trick Room
- Heal Pulse
- Protect

Amoonguss @ Eject Button
Ability: Regenerator
Level: 50
- Giga Drain
- Rage Powder
- Spore
- Protect

Scraggy @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
- Fake Out
- Drain Punch
- Knock Off
- Detect

Marowak-Alola @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Lightning Rod
Level: 50
- Flare Blitz
- Perish Song
- Rest
- Protect

I was thinking so too! I had this pretty much except with a couple of differences:

Dugtrio @ Focus Sash
Ability: Arena Trap
- Dig
- Protect
- Rock Slide
- Reversal

Amoonguss @ Eject Button
Ability: Regenerator
- Rage Powder
- Protect
- Spore
- Giga Drain

Sableye @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Prankster
- Fake Out
- Taunt
- Foul Play
- Protect

Gothorita @ Evolite
Ability: Shadow Tag
- Protect
- Trick Room
- Heal Pulse
- Psychic

Marowak-Alola @ Thick Club
Ability: Lightning Rod
- Flare Blitz
- Shadow Bone
- Perish Song
- Protect

Originally had trouble deciding between Hawlucha for Mimikyus with Sky Drop for added turn taking but didn't like all the ice weakness and Ferrothorn because he's really stally. I didn't notice the Sap Sipper Azumarill, I'm really liking your Azumarill might have to borrow that idea.

So I went with a more gimmicky team this go around, somewhat of a trick room core with some odd balls...

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Download
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt
- Trick Room
- Recover

Mimikyu @ Focus Sash
Ability: Disguise
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Serious Nature
- Play Rough
- Shadow Claw
- Trick Room
- Protect

Azumarill @ Normalium Z
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Tail
- Play Rough
- Belly Drum
- Protect

Ditto @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Imposter
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Transform

Wishiwashi @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Schooling
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Brave Nature
- Waterfall
- Ice Beam
- Earthquake
- U-turn

Marowak-Alola @ Thick Club
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Bonemerang
- Shadow Bone
- Flare Blitz
- Protect

So far this is the team I'm planning to breed - a Trick Room team with clearly defined physical and special halves.

With as little tutor moves as possible due to my limited access to them.

Mimikyu @ Mental Herb
Ability: Disguise
Level: 50
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Atk / 12 Def
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Shadow Claw
- Play Rough
- Will-O-Wisp

The same Mimikyu I use in my VGC Trick Room team, except with Play Rough over Destiny Bond, which never worked due to Mimikyu's not-that-terrible bulk.

Marowak-Alola @ Thick Club
Ability: Rock Head
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 212 Atk / 44 Def
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Shadow Bone
- Flare Blitz
- Bonemerang
- Protect

Electric offense looks extremely limited in this tourney (only Jolteon, Pikachu and the Raichus) so I guess Marowak can afford to run Rock Head this time so as to use Flare Blitz more freely (more relevant than ever before due to Ferrothorn being huge here). If I cannot get one ready in time, it's not much of a loss as Lightning Rod will help cover one of Wishiwashi's weaknesses.

EV spread ensures Alolan Muk's max Attack Knock Off does not OHKO if it has Gluttony or it doesn't poison (though it admittedly makes Marowak nearly useless, but nearly useless > KOed). Everything else to Attack.

Escavalier @ Assault Vest
Ability: Overcoat
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Iron Head
- Megahorn
- Knock Off
- Bug Bite

My idea is to use Escavalier as one half of the defensive backbone of the team. Sure, its double Fire weakness is a bummer given two of the biggest threats are doubly weak to Fire, but other than that, Escavalier looks like a cool check towards special attackers, as well as Fighting-type moves that would threaten Porygon2.

I'm not sure about the final slot but Bug Bite could be a good pick despite its sort of redundancy with Knock Off, as Escavalier has no recovery whatsoever, and with its terrible Speed it can eat pinch berries before the partner can attack. Alternatively I can give it Drill Run for Electric-types.

Anyways, this is the slot I have most of my doubts on. Why? Well... I don't have a Karrablast.

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Download
Level: 50
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Def / 12 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Trick Room
- Ice Beam
- Return
- Recover

I lost the count of how many different Porygon I have trained lol

Basically the mixed TR Porygon2 that is popular in VGC, but keeping Ice Beam instead of Thunderbolt as Ice/Normal coverage seems to be better here.

It also uses a physically defensive spread as there are nowhere near as many powerful special attackers as physical ones - in particular those with Fighting-type moves.

Wishiwashi-School @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Schooling
Level: 50
EVs: 212 HP / 140 Def / 156 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Muddy Water
- Ice Beam
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Protect

In this case I'm fortunate I had already bred an HP Fire Wishiwashi with Muddy Water a long time ago. The set is pretty much the standard VGC Wishiwashi but with HP Fire over Scald because Ferrothorn.

Talking about Ferrothorn, the HP and Defense investment prevents Ferro's uninvested Power Whip from taking 75% of Wishiwashi's HP. Everything else into Special Attack.

Reuniclus @ Fightinium Z
Ability: Overcoat
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 52 Def / 204 SpA
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Psychic
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast

Standard offensive Reuniclus provides both offensive presence and emergency Trick Room setting.

Outside of availability issues with Escavalier's set, this slot does not entirely convince me so far. Fine, I haven't tested it, but on paper...

The idea is that Reuniclus's All-Out Pummeling has a good chance to OHKO Ferrothorn and deals very large damage to opposing Porygon2, with the added benefit is that it will not miss unlike Focus Blast. The Fightinium Z also lets Reuniclus tank a Knock Off if necessary.

EV spreads prevents Jolly Kartana from 2HKOing Reuniclus with Smart Strike. Everything else into Special Attack. Overcoat prevents powder redirection as well as Spore.

Sableye @ Sitrus Berry

- Heal Pulse
- Psychic

Marowak-Alola @ Thick Club

ModernGamer Do you know how I can get an Azumarill with Encore and Perish Song? I can't figure it out.

If Bulbapedia is correct, you get those on Marill (not Azurill) through chain breeding.

(Encore in itself is a chain-bred move, while none of the parents that can give Encore can also give Perish Song. So you need a female Marill with Encore and a male parent with Perish Song. Or viceversa.)

Thanks looking it up for me! So if I bred the male and female with Perish Song and Encore and the baby will the baby have both?

Not possible. You can breed an Azurill with Encore. You can breed a Marill with Perish Song. You can not breed an Azurill or Marill with Encore and Perish Song.

Only Azurill can hatch with Encore. Only Marill can hatch with Perish Song. Even if you use a Perish Song Marill with a father that knows Encore to breed an Azurill, the Azurill won't know Perish Song.

I see now what Hare_vs_Tortoise was communicating. Well then, I guess I'm back to figuring out who should be my 6th party member.

Screens and Safeguard are options, though if I were to go that route, I think I like Meowstic (which could be your Fake Out user if you need one). Offensive Azelf with Psychic/Flamethrower/Protect/Taunt could be a good offensive taunter. I think I would use Focus Sash, but it really depends on the rest of your team (whether your Sash is going elsewhere)

We were talking about Sableye earlier which has both Fake Out and Taunt so if that's what you need, you can consider it
I think I'll try that instead (I probably have Prankster Meowstic I can breed from somewhere. I hope). That way, I'll not have two Dark types (Muk = <3). Sure, he'll be terrible offensively in Trick Room, but Prankster should still work under Trick Room, while being able to attack if it drops (assuming I give it an attack).

I don't think Meowstic has Foul Play, so no real attacks afaik. Helping Hand can help a bit though (Helping Hand boosted Fighting Z-Move from Kartana can OHKO max HP/Def Porygon2) but it still doesn't fix the issue of having no offensive pressure at all. And yes, Prankster would still work on anything not Dark, since that got buffed to be immune to enemy Prankster this gen.

Oh, I keep forgetting they nerfed Prankster regarding Dark types. So far, my team with working well without Meowstic. I might end up breeding both a Sableye and Meowstic, and make a last minute decision. Like you said, it's not like Meowstic has any offensive presence, and Will-o-Wisp is useful.

Edit: Meowstic can't learn Taunt, so I might end up going with Sableye instead.

What do you guys think of the team and what i weak to

Give this team a whirl if you want, as I don't think it's half bad. It's offensively focused with trying to check/beat the most common threats in mind.

Excadrill @ Groundium Z
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Rock Slide
- Protect

Rotom-W @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Levitate

Modest Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Thunderbolt
- Will-o-Wisp

Sneasel @ Focus Sash
Ability: Inner Focus

Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Icicle Crash
- Taunt
- Fake Out

Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Atk / 84 Def / 4 SpD
Brave Nature
- Power Whip
- Knock Off
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Chandelure @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Heat Wave
- Overheat
- Shadow Ball
- Energy Ball

Togetic @ Eviolite
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Calm Nature
- Dazzling Gleam
- Roost
- Tailwind
- Follow Me

To spare any lengthy details, the safest bet is to lead with Sneasel plus Rotom, Exca, or Chandy. Sneasel Fake Outs one target, and the partner attempts to blow a hole in the other target.

Togetic is the best support option I can think of that can draw fire away with Follow Me, and set up Tailwind if necessary.

Excadrill and Chandelure are natured to outspeed as much as possible, and the rest you can figure out for yourself.

Seeing that Extreme Evoboost components are there, I wanted to try running it in the competition. Do you guys have suggestions for rest of the team (Eevee, Espeon and Clefairy I'm going to use for sure)?

I know it's probably not the best strat but I think it'll be fun to use.

Something in your party with Fake Out could help. I battled Giovanni Costa (The most recognized Evoboost player in VGC) and he used Whimsicott with Tailwind and a Psych Up user.
(U74W-WWWW-WWW7-4ZP8 Replay for reference.)

Togetic and the Rotoms stand out a bit for that. Excadrill to take advantage and be a good Earthquake spam Pokemon to pass to would be good too.

I think you may have edited the post, you no longer have Sneasel with Fake Out does this change your strategy?

Actually the original mistake was Togetic learning Air Slash, which I
remembered it didn't. I fixed the post.

Also here's a couple lower ladder replays just to show kinda how the team functions.

Thanks for the links!

New here not sure if this is frowned upon to further discuss but: Do you really feel it worth sacrificing protect instead of taunt for fake out? Or is taunt a must against Mimikyu / porygon trick room setters?

On the note of Porygon how do you find battling against them I seem to get stuck against them not having a fighting type move anywhere

Taunt is your best anti-TR setup, although some Mimikyu and whatnot may run Mental Herb to counter it (although it's not very common)

In terms of fighting Porygon2, Knock Off will take a huge load off your shoulders, turning Porygon2 into decent bulk, from hella bulk. Any Pokemon with a strong Fightinium Z move can knock a huge hole in it, like Kartana, Primeape, Reuniclus (Focus Blast), and so on. If you are desperate enough, Choice Band Primeape is the best option imo to fight it, as Adamant always OHKOes the Smogon VGC17 standard Porygon2 set, and Jolly almost does it, about 50% of the time.

You do you though.
