Resource Monotype OM Mega-Thread

Sorry if i'm causing headaches to the monotype OMs "council" but I would also like to adress another issue, namely sableye in STABmons.
Sableye is a fairly common defensive pokemon in stabmons, who, with the combination of prankster and the skills topsy-turvy, parting shot and recover + filler is an excellent addition to most stall teams. However, since monotype restricts you to using a single type when creating your team, this causes problems in teambuilding for most types, as it is practically impossible to get through the dark defensive core for all types that don't have access to either a strong dark type mon (to resist prankster), or fairy, which can hit most of the dark defensive core super effectively. In fact, without some serious shenanigans like white herb or z stat boosts that negate negative ones, i have a hard time seeing other types get through the defensive core at all, much less be able to snatch a win. Therefore, I would nominate sableye in STABmons as a possible ban target, and would love to here other people's ideas on how to deal with sableye and the dark defensive core (tyranitar, alolan muk, buzzwole) without overcentralizing their team, with all types of course.
I would need to see some replays of this in action, because I can't see how dark's defensive core deals with the enormous power creep in the tier so well as to be considered "broken".

The lack of sturdy water resists is the most obvious problem; Keldeo, Kingdra, Araquanid all pose a tremendous threat to this core. Rock spam is a threat as well; with threats like Mega Tyranitar or SD Terrakion bopping the whole team. Even when at -1 threats such as Band Head Smash Aerodactyl 2HKO the entire defensive core. This isn't limited to just Rock or Water teams either; unless your team is obtusely reliant on set up sweepers I can't imagine why it couldn't beat the defensive core, assuming it's well built.

well, considering that the filler move is more often than not will-o-wisp, i'm not sure i agree with the physical threats you posted (especially with SD terrakion being setup), as they can't even reliably get through sableye itself, but i'll be sure to keep a lookout for any matches where types that have access to water pokemon that can threaten the core appear in the matchup vs dark.
Also, tyranitar shits on araquanid, whether or not you use tail glow on the switch or not (unless you luck out with 5 hit water shuriken)
-1 252+ SpA Water Bubble Araquanid Steam Eruption vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 168-204 (49.2 - 59.8%) -- 97.3% chance to 2HKO
+2 252+ SpA Water Bubble Araquanid Water Shuriken (15 BP) (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 216-264 (63.3 - 77.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252+ SpA Water Bubble Araquanid Water Shuriken (15 BP) (5 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tyranitar-Mega in Sand: 360-440 (105.5 - 129%) -- guaranteed OHKO
and that's assuming no defensive EVs
meanwhile (besides the fact that tyranitar now has shore up)
0 Atk Tyranitar-Mega Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Araquanid: 356-420 (105 - 123.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
I'll give you that a specs SS kingdra will be able to 2HKO tyranitar, but not so much an alolan muk, which, granted, doesn't get reliable recovery, but can be difficult to get through nonetheless, especially since you have to be wary of knock off.
Keldeo is probably dark's worst nightmare though, which hasn't changed much.

Hello, to contribute to the development of OMs Mono, especially AAA Mono in this post, I've made this Viability Abilities post.

The goal is to facilitate people eager to learn AAA Mono, as there is some Pokemon in AAA Mono who aren't ranked at all in the AAA VR and are really precious in Mono (Just to give one example: Cradily Thick Fat is really a good answer against Ice/Fire for Grass type).

Of course, some Pokemon don't have same abilities in function of the type they are used. (I still use my Cradily example, Thick Fat is really good in Grass type but irrelevant for the Rock type, which is used mainly with a water immunity).

As AAA tier is a creative tier, all possibilities aren't in this list, people will always think about new sets, cores and so abilities, however, the following list is enough complete to build some competitive teams.

I thanks 1 True Lycan and Tyke to have checked and completed it.

Hello, I'd like to write this post concerning some suggestions of unbans in AAA, as Greninja-Ash and Magearna have been unbanned while they are 2 really really good Pokemon, some others have the same potential than its:

► Aegislash

Aegislash is a huge threat in regular mono, especially in the steel type. But what's the difference with Mono AAA?
Why keep it banned?
• Stance Change is a really good ability to be bulky and strong offensively.
• Form a great steel core.
Why unban it?
• Psychic Surge, Dazzling abilities are common in this metagame, which affect its physical SD set.
• Agressive meta: A lot of Tinted Lens powerful Pokemon reign in Mono AAA.
• Prankster Pokemon: If it's played with physical set, the amount of Prankster WoW is considerable to pressure it enough.
• AV Regenerator Walls: In the case of played specially, there is a lot of Pokemon able to sponge its moves, by example Meloetta, Muk-A, Goodra,...
• Another Ability? Aegislash is restricted a lot concerning other ability, indeed, if its ability is edited, he will keep its defensive stats. As it doesn't learn recovery moves or Metal Burst, its staying-power is affected.
• Fighting check: On steel teams, Doublade-Regenerator is such better to deal with Fighting than Aegislash.

Conclusion: Only one way to be really good, Stance Change, predictable, easily checked by many types. My opinion about it is to unban it.

► Mawilite

M-Mawilite is, without doubt, the Pokemon with the highest physical attack in Pokemon, but what's the difference with Mono AAA?
Why keep it banned?
• Mega-Mawile hits really, really hard and is able to destroy some bad teams.
• Swords Dance + Priority move (Sucker Punch)
• Mawile ability is able to counter some strats against M-Mawile: Flash Fire, Magic Bounce.
Why unban it?
• Psychic Surge, Dazzling abilities are common in this metagame, which affect its physical SD set.
• Prankster Pokemon: If it's played with physical set, the amount of Prankster WoW is considerable to pressure it enough.

Conclusion: Still dangerous, I think he needs a suspect test. My opinion about it is neutral.

► Medichamite

M-Medicham is, the second Pokemon hitting the strongest physical next M-Mawile. But what's the difference with Mono-AAA?
Why keep it banned?
• Psychic Surge as Medicham ability: It avoid to be killed by Espeed Aerilate, Pixilate.
• Hit really hard
Why unban it?
• Psychic surge has its advantages but disadvantages too: Only works one.
• Many Pokemon faster than it are able to pressure enough to kill it or force the switch.
• Its bulk isn't the best.
• Totally checked by Doublade → It can't destroy some types usually weak to it like steel.
• Able to deal with some really strong Poison Heal users (Suicune, Azumarill by example) what this meta needs.

Conclusion: My opinion is to unban it.

► Genesect

Genesect has been always judged unhealthy, even in AAA Mono Oras, but what's the difference now?
Why keep it banned?
• Its diversity is really big (See post above in bug and steel type), can't except sets.
• Its huge movepool
• Give to steel more power
Why unban it?
• Although its diversity is really good, we can be oriented by its shiney form. Shiney form is used when it's played physically (Extreme-Speed) and with the Hasty Nature. 2 precious informations to handle it.
• Flying handle it well with Delta Stream, it doesn't need "click Ibeam/tbolt to win".
• Without Download (if not used like that) it loses some power.
• Magnet pull Pokemon are able to trap it and kill it if it isn't played with U-Turn (which is often the case in AAA Mono).

Conclusion: Genesect will be probably a top tier Pokemon but not like in Regular Mono. Unban it or Suspect.

Ps: Keep Naganadel banned, I don't see it healthy at the moment.

Also if medi has psychic surge then it can’t run its signature fake out plus bp combo. Maybe download could be better?

In my opinion, the case of Medi Psychic Surge is played in the psychic team to not be disturbed by Sucker Punch Bisharp, Espeed Lucario, ...
In the fighting case, you're right, Download will be a better ability on it.
I only insisted in the Psychic case as Psychic is one of the best type in AAA.

Laxpras

One small yeet for man, one giant yeet for mankind
I hope this is the thread for this and I'm not sure anyone even really cares but mono AAA is kind of ridiculous for a couple reasons:

Steel is absolutely busted and gets type advantage over essentially everything as well as having most of the best mons in AAA.
Banning Magearna is the easiest solution to at least mitigating this imo, Magearna walls everything in normal AAA, but at least you get the advantage of team variability to better be able to run Magnet Pull and other things. Mono not so much.

Psychic Terrain is allowed on psychic. With the prevention of priority and the power boost, this is just too much for a monotype metagame, even with terrain extender banned. Tinted Latios just runs through everything and you can't KO it with priority. Unburden Hoopa with psychic seed, etc etc.

There's essentially no reason to run anything besides Psychic or Steel rn.

Psychic there is no clear play around, Steel handles fire teams with FF/Prim Sea, and Fighting teams just lose anyway due to Cele/Skarm/Luke/Doublade.

but again idk if anyone really cares enough to change anything

(ps to those unfamiliar with the meta Magearna runs slow pivot regenvest and is nearly unkillable, especially since Zygarde is banned here)

Even if I agree with the fact Steel and Psychic needs a nerf (Magearna and Psychic Surge are 2 good ways to do it), I don't think others type can't be used competitively.
Water type has plenty of variety and powerful Pokemon (like Azumarill, Suicune, M-Gyarados, ...)
Fairy type has many answer to all type (Tapu's, Magearna (again it), Azu,..)
Fire type is able to deal with Ferro Primordial sea with Nape Magnet Pull (which is used in regular AAA if I'm right), Mold Breaker for Flash Fire mon, if you don't consider steel always plays with a Primordial Sea and a Flash Fire mon and you don't build in fonction of this fact, ofc you won't win.

I'm not going to name every possibilities for every type but I disagree with the fact there is no reason to play another type beside Psychic and Steel.
Ok, these type are really strong (like in regular Monotype, it doesn't exist a dream meta where every type are equals each others) but it's possible to play others types without always lose.

Just in case, if people think without Psychic Surge, Psychic is destroyed by Buzzwole Leech Life Triage, or Sucker Punch users, just think Queenly Majesty exists and it makes useless Buzzwole in this case.

I definitely agree that Steel and Psychic are the types to be played, though Water should have a place. In regular monotype, Tapu Lele was banned because of Psychic Surge. I fail to honestly see how AAA would make that situation any better as now other Pokemon can abuse Psychic Terrain like Tapu Lele did. As for Steel... Yeah, steel as a type is borked, not even just in AAA (now it doesn't necessarily have the best mons for Regular Mono, but still). There are abilities which can nullify 2 Supereffective hits, as well as Volt Absorb for the rare Electric Weakness. The problem is is that there isn't just one Pokemon that can be blamed for it. Magearna is definitely ridiculous, even in regular AAA and should be looked into here. It's typing and bulk made it a good sweeper with Soul Heart in regular mono, but now it can abuse other abilities that make it just as broken, but I'm not 100% sure that banning it would fix the steel problem that we have in Mono AAA

I'd like to quickly address the concerns regarding Steel and Psychic in Mono AAA brought up by Laxpras. We are very much aware of the their overcentralizing influence in the metagame, however any changes made to address it would be drastic and have a dramatic impact on the format.

This has dissuaded us from making any big changes to Mono AAA until after the conclusion of MWP; partially because it would disrupt the tournament, and partially because we hope to have the input of users who played the format in this tour. We'd have a hard time having a quality discussion if Mono AAA players do not feel at liberty to share their thoughts, builds and experience for fear of losing a competitive advantage. We plan to revisit the problem in a few weeks, and are striving to resolve these imbalances before Mono AAA is featured once again in BLT next month.

Hey guys! A few days ago, the OM I made got voted in as OMotM on Showdown. This means that we have a ladder for a month and are able to host tournaments under the format. For those who don't know what it is, Shared Power is an Other Metagame where all of the team's abilities are active at once. This effectively means that every Pokemon has its own ability plus the 5 other abilities of its teammates, making for a very crazy metagame. In Monotype, many matchups are simply flipped around thanks to immunity abilities affecting the whole team. A Gastrodon on your Ground team will mean that EVERYTHING is immune to Water. The thought of a Shared Power metagame in a Monotype format has already been toyed with actually, and we even have a format over on ROM for it. Shared Power Monotype would be tons of fun in my opinion, and if some (un)official tiering is made, we could maximize its playability.

So here is a link to the original thread in the OM subforum with a full threatlist and viability ranking, but I'll outline some threats in a Monotype environment of this metagame.

These three types get access to one of the greatest abilities in this metagame which is Magic Guard. Magic Guard invalidates all passive damage, including the troublesome Stealth Rock in Flying's case, and can even be used in tandem with Multiscale, something no other type can do. This might need to be regulated in a Monotype environment since it might overcentralize these three types, and Multiscale + Magic Guard being available on one type only sounds very limiting.

Water is one of the best types in Monotype Shared Power. Something might need to be done about Regenerator and/or Pressure, because that in tandem with the fact that both of Water's weaknesses are immunified by Azumarill and Lanturn might make this type way too good. Access to Regenerator for the whole team is ridiculous, but at least, these teams are still susceptible to status.

Dragon is really good because it gets access to Adaptability for the whole team as well as two of the best Pokemon in the metagame, which are Kyurem-Black and Dragonite. Since the type has no access to Magic Guard, though, Multiscale is much less reliable. That being said, the type still fares well in a lot of matchups.

Ground is another great type because even though Sand Rush is unshareable, abilities like Sand Force and Sand Stream can still be shared to the whole team. A Water immunity is extremely useful to solve the classic Azumarill problem.

A bit similar to Water, Steel can negate two of its 3 weaknesses thanks to Heatran and Bronzong. Trick Room will probably be the best playstyle for Steel teams, as Stakataka is really, really good, and with a Ground immunity, it cannot be lured by things like Earthquake Celesteela anymore. Steel does not have many top abilities like Magic Guard, Regenerator, or Adaptability, however.

That's just a short summary of the types thay may be good in this metagame. We can expect a few tournaments in the Monotype room to see how this holds up in practice vs theory, but I just wanted to give a little introduction for now. As far as potential unbans go, Zygarde-10% might be necessary. It gives Ground a fighting chance against Steel, but with the presence of defensive Mega Scizor appreciating Flash Fire, spamming Thousand Arrows isn't as common. Blaziken might be a great Pokemon to unban as well thanks to the newfound Fire immunity of the types it can terrorize. Fire and Fighting are also worse in this metagame than in regular Monotype. Anyways, this concludes the post. Opinions are appreciated and I want to know what you all think!

Very nice teams. I especially liked the Sing Mega Pidgeot which reminded me in a way of Skymin in MnM (which was fun to play with, albeit broken). Though I do have a few questions.
1. Why not Precipice Blades on Diggersby? The BP is higher, albeit it misses 15% of the the time.
2. On a similar vein to Diggersby, did you opt out of Draco on Kyurem because of the SpA drop?
3. Is there a glitch with Rotom? Strength Sap and Spore are grass type moves, but Rotom-Frost is an Ice/Electric type. Is it allowed to have those moves because Rotom-Mow exists too?

about #3, in stabmons since all the rotom formes are the same dex number it can use any move from ice, water, grass, flying, fire, electric and ghost type movepools

1. I wanted a reliable move to click against these targets. EQ already got the KOes I needed, and I have head charge for raw BP, so there was no reason to risk a miss every time.
2. Yes. Draco and clanging scales are both also options, though.
3. As Iexca has said, Rotom's other formes allow it to get those moves.

Following the conclusion of the MWP tournament, we have two additional bans for Monotype AAA to announce. These bans were discussed among Monotype AAA players who participated in MWP.

Magearna
Magearna has proven to be a very problematic Pokemon in Monotype AAA due to its ability to work in tandem with the bulky immunity core for Steel while utilizing an Assault Vest and Regenerator set. Its amazing defensive typing allows it to absorb a plethora of attacks and heal a large portion of its health upon switch out, proving to be incredibly hard to break, especially when combined with Steel's other defensive Pokemon. As seen in the tournament, Magearna was very difficult to break past and often required specific builds in order to beat, therefore centralizing the metagame. Therefore, Magearna is henceforth banned from Monotype AAA.

Psychic Surge
Psychic Surge is all-in-all way too much of an overwhelming force in Monotype AAA. Psychic has access to some of the most powerful attackers, who prove to be incredibly difficult to deal with when its Psychic-type attacks are boosted in Psychic Terrain. This means that Psychic Tinted Lens attackers cannot be walled by nearly any Pokemon while Psychic Terrain is active aside from those that are the most defensive in the metagame. Not only does Psychic Surge boost Psychic-type attacks to incredible levels, but it also inhibits the ability for many Pokemon to revenge kill appropriately by preventing priority. Teams that rely on Extreme Speed or other priority in order to effectively revenge kill cannot do so while Psychic Terrain is active, leaving them to be easily mowed over by the Psychic team. The amazing attack boost and prevention of effective counterplay has proven to be too much for Monotype AAA to handle and will also henceforth be banned from the metagame.

Blacephelon is now unbanned from Mono STABmons.
It was banned in standard STABmons for it's physical and mixed sets having little to no switch ins with the sheer power coming from 127/151 offenses and V-create, Moongeist Beam, Blue Flare, etc. While that's still true in mono STABmons, the same can be said of tons of threats in the tier such as Aerodactyl, Mega Medicham, and Specs Kingdra. Blacephelon also lacks the support in Mono STABmons from either of its types, Ghost or Fire, to bring it in safely or manage its checks. We’ve also already banned Trick or Treat, removing one of Blacephalon’s most dangerous sets.

In short, it's capacity as a wallbreaker doesn't make Blacephelon broken in STABmono the same way it had in standard STABmons.

There have been some recent bans in STABmons that I'm going over in relation to mono.

Spore will not be banned in Mono STABmons.
There are virtually no potent abusers in the tier besides Rotom-Wash, and it's hardly centralizing or impossible for any type to deal with. Far more potent sleep abusers exist such as Sing Mega Pidgeot.
Porygon-Z will not be banned in Mono STABmons either
. We've already axed the most dangerous move in its arsenal, Boomburst, and the centralizing wallbreaking sets are far less effective against the more offensive teams seen in mono STABmons.

Torchic was recently banned in LC due to its ability to act as an offensive presence while also providing amazing support in Speed Boost, Swords Dance, and Baton Pass, which overall restricted team building due to the overwhelming presence certain Pokemon became when provided with said boosts.

However, in Monotype LC, Fire acts as a purely offensive type, comprising of nearly all offensive Pokemon that all share the same common weaknesses. Torchic is unable to find opportunities to effectively provide the same support as it provides in regular LC, and even if done so, there aren't many viable Pokemon to pass the stat boosts to, rather Torchic acts as a means of hazard removal while being able to act as a decent revenge killer. Torchic does not restrict team building in any fashion in Monotype LC and will remain unbanned in this metagame.

The OMotMs are up, so look out for any room tours for the following formats:

350 cup - an ubers-based meta where all pokemon with 350 BST or lower have their stats doubled
Linked - a meta where the first two moves in a Pokémon's moveset are used simultaneously

First up is a pretty heat Poison team that I built around week 3 and ended up passing smub for the finals. I originally built it as a meme but it's very solid with great matchups against Flying, Water, Ground, Steel, Fire, Psychic, Fairy with the worst matchup being Normal.

The main offensive core is double adaptability with specsGar and scarf Nihilego, the latter of which soloes Flying with no problem. Specs Adapt Gengar with scald / spikes support shreds so many defensive cores with such ease. Triage Toxicroak helps patch up the difficult Normal matchup and also helps against Steel. Regenvest Muk is doing it's thing. And grassy terrain mega venusaur is able to put tremendous pressure on ground and water teams. So ye try it out.

This team probably looks a bit weird at the outset, considering there's a magneton on it, but basically the reason I'm running it over excadrill is because I need someting that checks specs Keldeo and being able to outspeed Mega Pidgeot gives Ton the edge on Zone.

Besides that it looks familiar to standard bulky offense with dual wincons in Mega Scizor and Magearna. Calm Mind Magearna can roll all over Water which would otherwise be steel's hardest matchup. It's running enough speed to outrun defensive Lando-t, but You can opt to run a timid nature with 212 speed to get the drop on Adamant Mega Swampert outside of rain. Swords Dance Mega Scizor puts an enormous amount of pressure on Rock (obviously), Normal, and Flying. If Celesteela doesn't have flamethrower then it's just set up bait.

The only other thing worth remarking on is the Flyinium Z Celesteela which exists solely for Araquanid, which otherwise clean sweeps this team. This set is running enough speed to outrun max speed neutral Araquanid but you probably don't need that much since no one uses that except mad people.

So ye enjoy using these
