OU Thundurus (Revamp)

Status
Not open for further replies.
[OVERVIEW]

Thundurus acts as niche wallbreaker in the tier thanks to its great Special Attack, colorful coverage, and access to a potent boosting option in Nasty Plot, allowing it to break through metagame staples like Ferrothorn, Toxapex, Tornadus-T, and Celesteela. Thundurus also has a respectable Speed stat, letting it outpace common Pokemon in Garchomp, Kartana, and Mega Latios, and an Electric / Flying typing gives it some useful defensive merits such as an immunity to Earthquake and a resistance to Grass and Flying; these notably allow it to stay in on bulky Grass-types like specially defensive Tapu Bulu and Tangrowth and means it can check Pokemon like Tornadus-T and Kartana. However, Thundurus's mediocre bulk and weakness to Stealth Rock mean it can't do this very reliably. Though Thundurus has overall good coverage, it struggles to break through Grass-types like Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur as well as Calm Mind Mega Latias thanks to its best attack for them being the weak Hidden Power Ice, which they negate with their abilities or stat boosts. Unfortunately, despite its good typing and decent Speed tier, Thundurus is very prone to being revenge killed, either by faster Pokemon like Ash-Greninja, Mega Alakazam, and Tapu Koko or by priority from the likes of Mega Mawile and Mega Medicham.

Moves
========

Hidden Power Ice has fantastic coverage alongside Thunderbolt, hitting Ground-types like Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Garchomp as well as Grass-types like Tapu Bulu, Tangrowth, and Amoonguss. Focus Blast rounds out the set's coverage, hitting Heatran, Ferrothorn, Mega Tyranitar, Chansey, and Kyurem for super effective damage.

Set Details
========

4 Defense EVs let Thundurus take two unboosted Leaf Blades from Kartana at full HP. Fightinium Z gives Thundurus access to a powerful All-Out Pummeling, which coupled with a Nasty Plot boost can help it break through Pokemon like Assault Vest Tyranitar and Gastrodon. It also helps with the stall matchup, providing Thundurus with a nuke that can break through Quagsire and even Chansey if it has taken some prior damage. Leftovers is an alternative if the Z-Crystal is already in use on Thundurus's team, improving Thundurus's ability to check certain threats while also making it more resistant to being revenge killed. However, it comes at the cost of a worsened stall matchup.

Usage Tips
========

Early- and mid-game, bring in Thundurus through double switches, on a free switch from Volt Switch or U-turn, or after a teammate faints to break through teams; set up Nasty Plot on forced switches in order to break through the opposing team. Thanks to Thundurus's typing and coverage, it can stay in on Grass-types like Ferrothorn, specially defensive Tapu Bulu, and Tangrowth that may try to switch in on a predicted Thunderbolt. Aside from its offensive capabilities, Thundurus can be used as a switch-in to Pokemon like Landorus-T, Tornadus-T, and Kartana, though it should be noted that it will fall to coverage from Landorus-T and can lose to the other two if Stealth Rock is up or it has taken even minor chip damage. Furthermore, if Thundurus takes too much damage from trying to check these Pokemon, it will no longer be able to take a hit from the aforementioned Grass-types after setting up, forfeiting its ability to break through them. Against more offensive teams, it can be better to just throw out attacks rather than to set up, as Thundurus won't have as many opportunities to set up due to being outsped by Pokemon commonly found on such teams like Mega Alakazam, Greninja, and Tapu Koko.

Team Options
========

Thundurus should be used on offensive teams due to its fragility and relative lack of setup opportunities, so it should be paired with other Pokemon that fit on this archetype. Mega Latias is a big issue for Thundurus; 3 Attacks Mega Latias can comfortably take a +2 Hidden Power Ice and retaliate with Ice Beam, which can KO after Stealth Rock, while Calm Mind Mega Latias actually uses Thundurus as setup fodder. Pursuit support from Tyranitar and Weavile can remove Mega Latias, making them very valuable partners. VoltTurn users like Landorus-T, Assault Vest Magearna, and Tornadus-T are great assets to Thundurus, as they give it more opportunities to wallbreak. Entry hazard setters like Focus Sash Landorus-T, Greninja, and Excadrill work well alongside Thundurus on hyper offensive teams, as they help to weaken its checks in range with Stealth Rock and Spikes. Sticky Web is an interesting option, rendering Pokemon like Mega Alakazam and Protean Greninja unable to revenge kill Thundurus, so Araquanid and Ribombee can be good partners to set it up. Sweepers found on hyper offense like Shift Gear Magearna, Dragon Dance Mega Charizard X, and Dragon Dance Mega Gyarados that can clean up after Thundurus has broken through the opposing team are great teammates.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Hidden Power Flying is an option over Hidden Power Ice that gives Thundurus a better matchup against Grass-types, specifically Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur. It leaves Thundurus unable to OHKO Landorus-T and Gliscor, though, making it the worse choice of Hidden Power the majority of the time. A Defiant set with the moves Thunderbolt, Hidden Power Ice, Knock Off, and Superpower could be used as a means of deterring Defog. However, it can prove to be inconsistent due to its inability to garner any boosts outside of Defiant. Because of this, it has to use Life Orb to attempt to make its offensive presence more consistent, causing it to be worn down exceptionally quickly. Thunder Wave is a decent option over Nasty Plot, providing good general speed control by crippling sweepers and faster Pokemon like Shift Gear Magearna, Mega Alakazam, Dragon Dance Mega Charizard X, and Mega Lopunny, allowing it to act as an emergency check to them. It also catches Tornadus-T if they try to pivot out safely with U-turn.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Revenge Killers and Strong Priority**: Thundurus's main downfall is that it has mediocre bulk and just a decent Speed tier, meaning it is very prone to being revenge killed by faster Pokemon like Ash-Greninja, Tapu Koko, Mega Alakazam, and Mega Lopunny and priority from Pokemon like Mega Mawile and Mega Medicham.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Assault Vest Magearna and Gastrodon take very little from Thundurus's attacks and can retaliate with Fleur Cannon or Toxic, respectively. However, it should be noted that the latter can fall to a +2 All-Out Pummeling after some prior damage. Calm Mind Mega Latias can use Thundurus as setup fodder, even with a Nasty Plot boost. Although 3 Attacks Mega Latias is 2HKOed most of the time by +2 Hidden Power Ice, it can retaliate with an Ice Beam, which threatens to KO Thundurus after Stealth Rock damage.

**Bulky Grass-types**: Though Thundurus has a good matchup against a few of them, Grass-types like Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur can beat Thundurus handily if it doesn't have Hidden Power Flying, with the former being able to stomach a +2 Hidden Power Ice easily and hit it with Spore and the latter actually walling it thanks to Thick Fat. Even Grass-types like Tapu Bulu and Tangrowth can beat Thundurus if it is weakened.

Hi, just gonna leave some feedback.

Thundurus is blessed with an Electric / Flying typing, giving it some useful defensive merits, such as an immunity to Earthquake and the ability to act as a check to Grass-types like the aforementioned Kartana and Tapu Bulu.
I don't think it's a great EQ immunity, nor do I think this is an important part of its niche.

Being able to switch into Torn-T is more useful imo.

However its bulk is quite mediocre, meaning it is far from a reliable measure.
I'd also mention its weakness to Stealth Rock

Fightinium Z gives Thundurus access to a powerful All-Out Pummelling, which coupled with a Nasty Plot boost can help it to break through Pokemon like Assault Vest Tyranitar and even Chansey
I think you could mention it breaks through Gastrodon with some chip too. It's not amazing rn but it's hell for all electric types.

or on a Pokemon that can't harm it too much such as Toxapex, Tapu Bulu, and Mega Scizor.
Im pretty sure HP Ice will lose to spdef sd bulu 1v1. Maybe Celesteela or Ferrothorn is a better example.

Aside from its offensive capabilities, Thundurus can be used as an emergency switch-in to Pokemon like Landorus-T, Tornadus-T, and Kartana, though it should be noted that it will fall to coverage from the former, and can fall to the latter two if it has taken even minor chip damage.
You could add "Or if Stealth Rock is up"

Against more offensive teams, it is often better to just throw out attacks rather than to setup as Thundurus will be forced out by a revenge killer anyway.
Revenge-killers exist on bulky teams though, and they obviously dont switch in so it's not necessarily the reason you shouldnt set up.
You could probably add "a boost isn't needed" or something

Assault Vest Magearna is absurdly bulky on the special side, with even a +2 Fightinium Z not even coming close to knocking it out,
I think it should be +2 All-Out Pummelling

Fun read, cool mon :o

Just a couple comments on DKM's suggestions. I'll give an actual check tomorrow!

Saying it's a Tornadus-T resist it surely a nice point, please add it in, but I still think it’s nice to mention EQ immunity because that lets it do stuff like pivot into Garchomp and Offensive Landorus-T as well as prevent Choice Scarf Landorus-T from sweeping, which can be helpful for several teams.

I think you could mention it breaks through Gastrodon with some chip too. It's not amazing rn but it's hell for all electric types.
Quagsire too! Helpful against stall.

Agree with all the other points, ty for ur suggestions DKM :)

Thunder Wave should be on this analysis somewhere as a np alternative, para is always appreciated and having a backup for fast shit is always good - you can also spread para with things like ash gren making it a ton more dangerous cus theres an extra 25% to bullshit its counters. you can use this to force out torn instead of it trying to get its way w/ uturn because on a frail mon sr weak mon like thundy 10% goes a long way. just beware that para doesnt stop dark types lol

you could also use a core of something like thundurus + sd kartana, lati is gonna be a common switchin to thundy (+ kart) on teams so if you land that twave its fucked usually

Overview
  • Mention that, courtesy of its typing, many Grass-types such as Ferrothorn, Tangrowth, and Specially Defensive Tapu Bulu can't really touch it.
  • Mention how it's walled by Mega Latias too.
While Thundurus does have good coverage, it only has access to one Hidden Power, meaning it either struggles with Grass-types, especially Mega Venusaur, if opting to use Hidden Power Ice, or it struggles with Choice Scarf Landorus-T and Gliscor if running Hidden Power Flying.
  • Mention only Mega Venusaur and Amoonguss here. HP Flying is pretty bad.

Set

move 2: Thunderbolt
move 3: Hidden Power Ice
move 4: Focus Blast
item: Fightinium Z
ability: Prankster
nature: Timid
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
  • Make this the main set:
    • Hidden Power Flying in OO.
    • Leftovers in Set Details.

Moves
Hidden Power Flying is a good alternative that allows Thundurus to more reliably 1v1 the aforementioned Grass-types, though it does leave it unable to OHKO Landorus-T and Gliscor.
  • Explicitly mention Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur, as Tangrowth, Specially Defensive Tapu Bulu, and Ferrothorn can't quite touch it.
Focus Blast rounds out the set's coverage, hitting Heatran, Ferrothorn, Tyranitar, and Kyurem for super effective damage.
  • Chansey as a target here too. Still takes a lot from +2 Focus Blast.

Usage Tips
  • Mention how it can stay in on some Grass-types that can't do much harm to it.
Aside from its offensive capabilities, Thundurus can be used as an emergency switch-in to Pokemon like Landorus-T, Tornadus-T, and Kartana, though it should be noted that it will fall to coverage from Landorus-T and can lose to the other two if Stealth Rock is up or if even minor chip damage is taken.
  • Mention how this forfeits most of its ability to break Grass-types that it would wall at full.

Team Options
  • Pursuit support for Mega Latias.
Thundurus should be used primarily on hyper offensive teams, due to its fragility and relative lack of setup opportunities, so it should be paired with other Pokemon that fit on this archetype.
  • Bulky offence is okay too.

Checks & Counters
  • Merge Gastrodon and AV Magearna's sections into "Specially Defensive Pokémon" or something. Also add Mega Latias in there.
  • Make a section for Grass-types mostly emphasising Mega Venusaur and Amoonguss, but also mention Tangrowth and Specially Defensive Tapu Bulu can take care of Thundurus if it's weakened.

I'd like to take a second look after you've implemented everything before stamping!

Moves
Hidden Power Ice has fantastic coverage alongside Thunderbolt, hitting Ground-types like Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Garchomp without needing to use the Z-Move, and Grass-types like Tapu Bulu, Tangrowth, and Amoonguss.
  • I don't really get the "without needing to use the Z-move part" +2 Z-move doesn't even OHKO Landorus-T or Gliscor.
Set Details
Leftovers is an alternative if the Z-Crystal is already in use, improving Thundurus's ability to check certain threats while also making it more resistant to being revenge killed.
  • Mention how it makes the stall / fat team matchup a bit harder
Usage Tips
Thundurus should be used to break through teams in the early- and mid-game by setting up Nasty Plot on forced switches, on a free switchin after a teammate faints, or on a Pokemon that can't harm it too much such as Toxapex, Celesteela, and Mega Scizor.
  • Not so sure about this. Toxic from Toxapex and Leech Seed from Celesteela are quite annoying.
Other Options
Hidden Power Flying is an option over Hidden Power Ice to give Thundurus a better matchup against Grass-types, specifically Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur.
  • Mention how missing out on Landorus-T and Gliscor is really bad.
Excellent job!

HP Ice isn't really ment to help with a thick fat mon like venu, Tbolt does more. Remove it or reword it to say their bulk and abilities are troublesome. (Amoong regen makes it harder to wear down)

Thanks to Thundurus's typing and coverage, it can stay in on Grass-types like Ferrothorn, Tapu Bulu, and Tangrowth that may try to switch in on Thundurus.
Specify SpD Bulu here too

Tbh going out of ur way to para mlati isnt always smart since its just getting more cms. I'd rather mention smth like DD Zard X or SG Mag that gets super fucked by twave

It also catches Tornadus-T's that try to chip Thundurus with U-turn.
U-turn isnt for chip, it's for pivoting out safely.

[OVERVIEW]

Thundurus acts as niche wallbreaker in the tier thanks to its great Special Attack, colourful colorful coverage, and access to a potent boosting option in Nasty Plot, allowing Thundurus to break through metagame staples like Ferrothorn, Toxapex, Tornadus-T, and Celesteela. Thundurus also has a respectable Speed stat, outpacing common Pokemon in Garchomp, Kartana, and Mega Latios. Thundurus is blessed with an Electric / Flying typing, giving it some useful defensive merits, (RC) such as an immunity to Earthquake, (RC) and a resistance to Grass and Flying, which allows it to stay in on bulky Grass-types like Specially Defensive specially defensive Tapu Bulu and Tangrowth, (RC) and means it can check Pokemon like Tornadus-T and Kartana. However, (AC) its Thundurus's bulk is quite mediocre, (AC) and it is weak to Stealth Rock, meaning it can't do this very reliably. Though Thundurus has overall good coverage, it struggles to break through Grass-types like Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur as well as Calm Mind Mega Latias thanks to its best attack for them being the weak Hidden Power Ice, which they negate with their abilities or stat boosts. Unfortunately, despite its good typing and decent Speed tier, Thundurus is very prone to being revenge killed, either by faster Pokemon like Ash-Greninja, Mega Alakazam, and Tapu Koko, (RC) or by priority from the likes of Mega Mawile and Mega Medicham.

Moves

Hidden Power Ice has fantastic coverage alongside Thunderbolt, hitting Ground-types like Landorus-T, Gliscor, and Garchomp, (RC) as well as Grass-types like Tapu Bulu, Tangrowth, and Amoonguss. Focus Blast rounds out the set's coverage, hitting Heatran, Ferrothorn, Mega Tyranitar, Chansey, and Kyurem for super effective damage.

Set Details

4 Defense EVs lets Thundurus take two unboosted Leaf Blades from Kartana at full HP. Fightinium Z gives Thundurus access to a powerful All-Out Pummeling, which coupled with a Nasty Plot boost can help it to break through Pokemon like Assault Vest Tyranitar and Gastrodon. It also helps with the stall matchup, providing it Thundurus with a nuke that can break through Quagsire and even Chansey if it has taken some prior damage. Leftovers is an alternative if the Z-Crystal is already in use on Thundurus's team, improving Thundurus's ability to check certain threats while also making it more resistant to being revenge killed. It However, it comes at the cost of a worsened stall matchup however.

Usage Tips
========

Thundurus should be used to break through teams in the early- and mid-game by setting up Nasty Plot on forced switches or on a free switch-in (AC) from Volt Switch / or U-turn or after a teammate faints. Thanks to Thundurus's typing and coverage, it can stay in on Grass-types like Ferrothorn, Specially Defensive specially defensive Tapu Bulu, and Tangrowth that may try to switch in on Thundurus. Aside from its offensive capabilities, Thundurus can be used as a switch-in to Pokemon like Landorus-T, Tornadus-T, and Kartana, though it should be noted that it will fall to coverage from Landorus-T and can lose to the other two if Stealth Rock is up or if even minor chip damage is taken. However Furthermore, if Thundurus takes too much damage from trying to check these Pokemon, it will forfeit its ability to break through the aforementioned Grass-types by taking a hit from them after setting up. Against more offensive teams, it can be better to just throw out attacks rather than to set up (add space), (AC) as Thundurus won't have as many opportunities to set up (add space) due to being outsped by Pokemon commonly found on such teams like Mega Alakazam, Greninja, and Tapu Koko.

Team Options
========

Thundurus should be used on offensive teams due to its fragility and relative lack of setup opportunities, so it should be paired with other Pokemon that fit on this type of archetype. Mega Latias is a big issue for Thundurus; (add semicolon) - 3 Attacks Mega Latias can comfortably take a +2 Hidden Power Ice and retaliate with Ice Beam, which can KO after Stealth Rock, while Calm Mind actually and uses Thundurus as setup fodder with Calm Mind. Pursuit support from Tyranitar and Weavile can remove Mega Latias, making them very valuable partners. VoltTurn users like Landorus-T, Assault Vest Magearna, and Tornadus-T are great assets to Thundurus, (AC) as they give it more opportunities to wallbreak. Hazard setters like Focus Sash Landorus-T, Greninja, and Excadrill work well alongside Thundurus on hyper offensive teams, (AC) as they help to weaken its checks in range with Stealth Rock and Spikes. Sticky Web is an interesting option, rendering Pokemon like Mega Alakazam and Protean Greninja unable to revenge kill Thundurus, so setters of the hazard, namely Araquanid and Ribombee, can be good partners. Sweepers found on hyper offence offense like Shift Gear Magearna, Dragon Dance Mega Charizard X, and Dragon Dance Mega Gyarados that can clean up after Thundurus has broken through the opposing team are great teammates.

Other Options
=============

Hidden Power Flying is an option over Hidden Power Ice to that gives Thundurus a better matchup against Grass-types, specifically Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur. It leaves Thundurus unable to OHKO Landorus-T and Gliscor though, making it the worse choice of Hidden Power the majority of the time. A Defiant set with the moves Thunderbolt, Hidden Power Ice, Knock Off, and Superpower could be used as a means of deterring Defog. However, (AC) it can prove to be inconsistent due to its inability to garner any boosts outside of Defiant. Because of this, it has to use Life Orb to attempt to make its offensive presence more consistent, causing it to be worn down exceptionally quickly. Thunder Wave is a decent option over Nasty Plot, providing good general speed control by crippling sweepers and faster Pokemon like Shift Gear Magearna, Mega Alakazam, Dragon Dance Mega Charizard X, (AC) and Mega Lopunny, allowing it to act as an emergency check. It also catches Tornadus-T's that if they try to pivot out safely with U-turn.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Revenge Killers and Strong Priority**: Thundurus's main downfall is that it has mediocre bulk and just a decent Speed tier, meaning it is very prone to being revenge killed by faster Pokemon like Ash-Greninja, Tapu Koko, Mega Alakazam, and Mega Lopunny, (RC) and priority from Pokemon like Mega Mawile and Mega Medicham.

**Specially Defensive Pokemon**: Assault Vest Magearna and Gastrodon take very little from Thundurus's attacks and can retaliate with a Fleur Cannon or a Toxic, (AC) respectively.. (RP) However, (AC) it should be noted that the latter can fall to a +2 All-Out Pummeling after some prior damage. Calm Mind Mega Latias can use Thundurus as setup fodder, even with a Nasty Plot boost up. Although 3 Attacks Mega Latias is 2HKOed most of the time by +2 Hidden Power Ice, it can retaliate Thundurus with an Ice Beam, which threatens to KO after Stealth Rock damage.

**Bulky Grass-types**: Though Thundurus has a good matchup against a few of them, Grass-types like Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur can beat Thundurus handily if it isn't doesn't have Hidden Power Flying, with the former being able to stomach a +2 Hidden Power Ice easily and hit it with Spore, (RC) and the latter actually walling it thanks to Thick Fat. Even Grass-types like Tapu Bulu and Tangrowth can beat Thundurus if it is weakened.
