RU Palossand [GP 2/2]

Mavis

Banned deucer.
[OVERVIEW]

With its high Defense, Ghost / Ground typing, and reliable recovery in Shore Up, Palossand is able to lay Stealth Rock against Donphan and Forretress while also blocking their attempts to remove its entry hazards away with Rapid Spin. It also makes for a serviceable check to many of the tier's physical attackers, such as Rhyperior, Tyrantrum, Zygarde-10%, Escavalier, and Toxicroak and can lay Stealth Rock against them or use Earth Power to force them out. However, Palossand loses terribly to the tier's most common Rapid Spin user, Mega Blastoise, and fails to block Defog, doing very little to common Defoggers like Mandibuzz and Flygon, apart from Toxic. In addition, Palossand sports few valuable resistances outside of Rock, and its susceptibility to common Dark- and Grass-type attacks makes it difficult to fit onto a team and requires more specific team support to help it do its job.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Earth Power is chosen as a reliable STAB move due to its ability to deal good damage to a lot of the Pokemon that Palossand is tasked with dealing with, namely opposing Rock-types as well as Donphan. Shore Up provides reliable recovery to keep Palossand healthy in the face of residual damage, and helps it come in on threats to check them. Stealth Rock is a must for any team, and Palossand can use its good matchups against many physical attackers as an opportunity to set them. Toxic is able to exert lasting pressure on switch-ins that don't care about Earth Power, like Virizion, Mandibuzz, Golisopod, and Necrozma.

Set Details
========

Maximum Defense investment is used to check Donphan and other physical attackers as well as possible. Leftovers is chosen because the passive recovery helps keep Palossand healthy throughout the match. Colbur Berry can also be used to be able to switch into and take Knock Off from Pokemon that Palossand is used to checking, like Machamp and Donphan. Though not coming into play often, Water Compaction is used for catching a +2 Defense boost off Golisopod's Aqua Jet, though it's the only common Water-type attack that doesn't threaten to 2HKO Palossand.

Usage Tips
========

Bring Palossand in liberally against Fighting- and Rock-types that can't harm it very much, like Toxicroak, Machamp, and Rhyperior. Palossand can use Stealth Rock as these Pokemon switch out or, if Stealth Rock is already up, fire off an Earth Power. Shore Up's PP should be conserved and only used when needed, as Palossand will need to stay healthy throughout the battle in order to continue checking threats. Be wary of Toxic, as it cuts into Palossand's longevity, and it has no way to block the move itself. Palossand should be played with caution around Pokemon known to commonly carry Dark-type coverage moves, such as Mega Blastoise and Machamp, as it doesn't want its Colbur Berry used unnecessarily.

Team Options
========

Wallbreakers that appreciate Stealth Rock and can take on the Water- and Grass-types that threaten Palossand are good teammates; notable examples of this include Goodra, Toxicroak, Roserade, and Shaymin. Heal Bell support from Vaporeon and Florges is appreciated, as Palossand hates Toxic. These Pokemon's good Special Defense also enables them to take on problematic special attackers like Noivern and, in Vaporeon's case, Nidoqueen and Salazzle. Palossand can fit on some entry hazard stacking teams due to its ability to block Rapid Spin, so Spikes or Toxic Spikes users that appreciate Palossand spinblocking Donphan, like Roserade, Dragalge, and Golisopod pair well with it. Golisopod can also threaten Espeon very well. Teammates that benefit from Fighting- and Rock-types being dealt with, such as Snorlax, Ninetales, and Salazzle, work well with Palossand. Fighting-types that can threaten Dark-types, like Bewear, Passimian, and Virizion, also work well and appreciate Stealth Rock being in play to wear down their checks and assist in their wallbreaking.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Other Options
=============

Groundium Z or Ghostium Z can be attached to Palossand in order for it to threaten big damage on many foes it checks while still blocking Knock Off, but your Z-Crystal is usually best used elsewhere.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Powerful Special Attackers**: Palossand's uninvested Special Defense means that even neutral special attacks, like Salazzle's Fire Blast and Noivern's Hurricane, can threaten to 2HKO it. Super effective attacks also bring it down very quickly, like Mega Blastoise's Dark Pulse and Mismagius's Shadow Ball.

**Toxic**: As Palossand has no way of blocking the move, it is gravely threatened by Toxic, which cuts into its longevity.

**Espeon and Xatu**: Taking little or no damage from Earth Power and bouncing back Stealth Rock and Toxic, Espeon and Xatu fear only the rare Shadow Ball and will otherwise give Palossand a lot of trouble.

**Grass-types**: Shaymin and Roserade care very little for Toxic and can use Palossand as a free turn to either fire off a powerful attack or, in Roserade's case, set Spikes. Other Grass-types such as Virizion and Mega Sceptile don't care for Palossand's attacks either and can easily force it out.

Friendly am check. You did a good job with this, bkdrew. These were just a few things I spotted, but implement whatever you want since I'm not an official QC member.

  • I would mention the immense amount of competition Palossand has as a Stealth Rock setter in RU. Stuff like Necrozma, Rhyperior, and Metagross are much less passive and are easier to fit on a team.

I would much rather you mention Golisopod over Garbodor. Golisopod can also help Palossand deal with Espeon.
  • Teammates that benefit from Fighting- and Rock-types being dealt with, such as Snorlax, Ninetales, and Salazzle, work well with Palossand, able to better threaten the enemy team with their checks removed.

  • Shadow Ball can be used over Toxic for a solid move to threaten opposing Espeon and Sigilyph with, but most other Psychic-types are too bulky for an uninvested Shadow Ball to deal much damage to, and leaving Palossand completely helpless against Mandibuzz is ill-advised. This seems like it's good enough to be in the Moves section.
  • A Z-crystal can be attached to Palossand to threaten big damage on many things it checks while still blocking Knock Off, but your Z-crystal is usually best used elsewhere.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Powerful special attackers**: Palossand's uninvested Special Defense means that even neutral special attacks, like Salazzle's Fire Blast and Noivern's Hurricane, can threaten to 2HKO it. Mega Blastoise and especially Mismagius needs to be mentioned here.

**Residual damage**: Palossand will take damage from all types of entry hazards and is highly susceptible to Toxic, meaning it can be worn down easily. I'm not sure why this is a bullet. Chip damage isn't that big of an issue considering it always runs Shore Up. The Toxic mention is fine.

**Espeon**: Taking little damage from Earth Power and bouncing back Stealth Rock and Toxic, Espeon fears only the rare Shadow Ball and will otherwise give Palossand a lot of trouble.

**Natural Cure Grass-types**: Shaymin and Roserade care nothing for Toxic and can use Palossand as a free turn to either fire off a powerful attack or, in Roserade's case, set Spikes. Other Grass-types don't really care about Earth Power, either.

  • With it's high defense, Ghost / Ground typing, and reliable recovery in Shore Up, Palossand is able to lay Stealth Rock against Donphan and Forretress while also blocking their attempts to Rapid Spin its hazards away. this bullet is correct but seems really specific, id just mention its a good mon 2 control hazard thanks to 1 its ability 2 rock on most physical attackers and 2 spinblocking phan and forry
  • Palossand also makes for a serviceable check to many of the tier's physical attackers, such as Rhyperior, Tyrantrum, Zygarde-10%, Escavalier, and Toxicroak and can lay Stealth Rock or use Earth Power to force them out. fight + rock resist are important here, and u also beat p much every ground type too. be a bit more specific here first, you can then mention it being an all around physical blanket check later
  • However, Palossand loses terribly to the tier's most common Rapid Spin user, Mega Blastoise, as well as failing to block Defog, doing little of note to common defoggers like Mandibuzz or Florges apart Toxic. except u should be running toxic, so in the long term u do end up beating these. u can also mention being weak to tsar and dhelm and how those 3 make it a bit mu dependant 2 do its job. also something about its vulnerability 2 toxic
  • Palossand sports few valuable resistances outside of its Rock resistance, and its susceptibility to common Dark- and Grass-type attacks makes it difficult to fit onto a team and requires more specific team support to help it do its job. elec and fight resistances are valuable, and despite its lack of resistances it still has plenty of bulk to check a bunch of stuff (think of something like p2 or lax), and that it still beats most mons that use knock off so its not hugely vulnerable 2 dark as it is to say, grass
  • Palossand also has very stiff competition from RU's other Stealth Rock setters, like Necrozma, Metagross, and Nidoqueen, as the all offer far greater offensive presence with less passivity. id also mention competition from other grounds like donphan

  • mention passho berry, helps check barb in particular and can make the goli mu even easier

Banned deucer.
remove the bit on it facing competition with other sr users. it’s a unique setter in a number of ways, including not being weak to ground, spinblocking donphan, and having reliable recovery.

main set should look like this:

[SET]
name: Defensive Stealth Rock
move 1: Earth Power
move 2: Shore Up
move 3: Stealth Rock
move 4: Toxic
item: Leftovers / Colbur Berry
ability: Water Compaction
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP /252 Def / 4 SpD

deslah shadow ball. i’ve used this enough to find that toxic is far too important to give up. shadow ball doesn’t do enough damage to any remover (bar sigilyph) to make it worth using, and toxic is way too important to prevent mons like virizion from getting free switch ins. i’d also slash leftovers with colbur berry. it can check donphan just fine without colbur and often doesnt need it since the few other mons it would be useful against are uncommon. last thing is if you’re gonna mention espeon, then make sure to mention xatu as well since it can actually beat the better version (the one lacking shadow ball).

qc 3/3 once this is all done

Golisopod can also can threatn threaten Espeon very well. Teammates that benefit from Fighting- and Rock-types being dealt with, such as Snorlax, Ninetales, and Salazzle, work well with Palossand, able to better threaten the enemy team with their checks removed. Fighting-types that can threaten Dark-types, like Bewear, Passimian, and Virizion, also work well and appreciate Stealth Rock being in play to wear down their checks and assist in their wallbreaking.

Other Options
=============

Groundium Z or Ghostium Z can be attached to Palossand in order for it to threaten big damage on many things it checks while still blocking Knock Off, but your Z-Crystal is usually best used elsewhere.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Toxic**: As Palossand has no way of blocking the move, Palossand is gravely threatened by Toxic, which cuts into its longevity.

**Espeon and Xatu**: Taking little or no damage from Earth Power and bouncing back Stealth Rock and Toxic, Espeon and Xatu fear only the rare Shadow Ball and will otherwise give Palossand a lot of trouble.

**Grass-types**: Shaymin and Roserade care nothing very little for Toxic and can use Palossand as a free turn to either fire off a powerful attack or, in Roserade's case, set Spikes. Other Grass-types such as Virizion and Mega Sceptile don't care for Palossand's attacks either and can easily force it out.

However, Palossand loses terribly to the tier's most common Rapid Spin user, Mega Blastoise, as well as failing and fails to block Defog, doing very little to common Defoggers like Mandibuzz or and Flygon, apart from Toxic. In addition, Palossand sports few valuable resistances outside of its Rock resistance, and its susceptibility to common Dark- and Grass-type attacks makes it difficult to fit onto a team and requires more specific team support to help it do its job.

Moves
========

Earth Power is chosen as a reliable STAB move due to its ability to deal good damage to a lot of the Pokemon that Palossand is tasked with dealing with, namely opposing Rock-types as well as Donphan. Shore Up provides reliable recovery to keep Palossand healthy in the face of residual damage (RC) and helping helps it come in on threats to check them. Stealth Rock is a must for any team, and Palossand can use its good matchups against many physical attackers as an opportunity to set them. Toxic is able to exert lasting pressure on Pokemon switching in on Palossand switch-ins that don't care about Earth Power, like Virizion, Mandibuzz, Golisopod, and Necrozma.

Set Details
========

Though not coming into play often, Water Compaction is used for catching a +2 Defense boost off Golisopod's Aqua Jet, as it's which is the only common Water-type attack that doesn't threaten to 2HKO Palossand.

Usage Tips
========

Bring Palossand in liberally against Fighting- and Rock-types that can't harm it very much, like Toxicroak, Machamp, and Rhyperior. Palossand can use Stealth Rock as these Pokemon switch out (RC) or, (AC) if Stealth Rock is already up, fire off an Earth Power. Shore Up's PP should be conserved and only used when needed, as Palossand will need to stay healthy throughout the battle in order to continue checking threats. Be wary of Toxic, as it cuts into Palossand's longevity, (AC) and it has no way to block the move itself. Palossand should be played with caution around Pokemon known to commonly carry Dark-type coverage moves, such as Mega Blastoise and Machamp, as it doesn't want its Colbur Berry used unnecessarily.

Team Options
========

These Pokemon's good Special Defense also enables them to take on problematic special attackers like Noivern or and, for in Vaporeon's case, Nidoqueen and Salazzle.
