Welcome to the 1v1 Viability Rankings thread! This thread is used to discuss how good we think various Pokemon are in the current 1v1 metagame. As with any resource, these notes should be kept in mind:

- post smartly; this isn't a set dump thread where you just throw in whatever random set you like using on ladder, this is meant to be a resource dedicated to sorting out the Pokemon that perform the absolute best in the current metagame. Shitposts and one liners will be deleted.
- words only go so far when it comes to making a convincing case to rank something; showing calcs and replays says a lot more about a Pokemon's interaction with others than simple speculation.
- discussion isn't necessarily frowned upon, but if it's a one line response to someone's nomination or something, it'd probably be better just to bring it up to the person in pms or the room or somewhere that won't clutter the thread.

Hydreigon: UR ---> B or B+

This is IMO the most glaring omission from the current VR, which I think is otherwise pretty accurate. For starters, Scarf Hydreigon shreds all 3 S Ranks, and unlike Haxorus it is immune to Sableye's BS courtesy of the Dark typing. Said typing also gives it favorable match-ups against Aegislash, Galarian Corsola and Reuniclus, with Fire Blast doing a number against Corviknight and Ferrothorn. It's also versatile, for I've heard in roomchat discussions that a Nasty Plot set could be under-explored for better match-ups against fat stuff. Hydreigon's only glaring fault IMO is the terrible weakness against pretty much every viable Fairy, and while for that I could see it ranking a bit lower than B+, it's at least better than complete dogshit like Eiscue.

On a similar note, my girl Hatterene is way better than anything in C-. The stats, typing and ability should get it at least C or C+ placement.

A few personal nominations:

Dracovish -> A: Dracovish's power relies pretty heavily on it outspeeding its opponent, and with a mediocre base 75 speed tier and the prevalence of choice scarf in the metagame, Dracovish ends up doing far less damage in practice than on paper. It is still an extremely threatening physical powerhouse, but its weakness to many faster Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Togekiss along with its bad matchups against Dragapult (which outspeeds Scarf Dracovish even without being scarfed itself) and Mimikyu (which just clicks play rough -> shadow sneak to win) leave it a bit too underwhelming for A+ rank IMO. Thus, it should drop one subrank.

Mimikyu -> A+: As in gen 7, Mimikyu is a powerhouse. Disguise despite its nerf is still an absolutely phenomenal ability, and Mimikyu's matchup spread only serves to further improve its viability. Mimikyu reliably beating Darmanitan-Galar, Dragapult, Hydreigon, and Dracovish is amazing, while checking Mew (only fearing certain techs such as Kasib Berry) is another extremely useful attribute. All in all Mimikyu is more than deserving enough for a small rise on the VR.

Sylveon -> A: Sylveon's inherent unpredictability is perhaps its greatest attribute, with sets such as Yawn + Endure, Choice Specs, Pixie Plate Quick Attack, and even Baby-Doll Eyes covering different sections of the metagame while being hard to distinguish from team preview alone. Despite shaky matchups against many of 1v1's current top tiers, Sylveon's sheer power and versatility plus its distinction as a strong special attacker in this heavily physically-oriented metagame leave it deserving of a small rise.

Drampa -> C: Drampa is the most powerful specially-attacking Normal-type in the metagame, and with Haban Berry can reliably beat many of the other prominent dragons with extremely powerful STAB moves in Hyper Beam and Draco Meteor boosted by Berserk. It also has extremely diverse coverage options which lend itself to a degree of unpredictability. Maybe I'm overhyping this Pokemon but D feels way too low for it.

Gastrodon -> B-/B: The prevalence of Trick in this metagame makes Sticky Hold a fantastic ability to have, as Gastrodon is in effect immune to Trick, giving it a niche as a persistent check/counter to its many users. Possessing both Amnesia and Acid Armor as well as the reliable recovery in Recover make Gastrodon a good set-up wall in its own right as well, and being able to fulfill a defensive role without worrying about Trick is huge in this metagame. Should be ranked higher IMO.

Excadrill at B is a criminally low ranking.

Excadrill to a-

Excadrill’s best sets are Life Orb then Choice Band then Choice Scarf.

For some reason, life orb Excadrill has been relatively ignored and vastly under appreciated.

Excadrill @ Life Orb
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 224 Atk / 36 SpD / 248 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Substitute / Swords Dance / Poison Jab / Rock Slide
- Bulldoze / Swords Dance / Poison Jab / Rock Slide

36 Special Defense EVs allow it to survive and OHKO Togekiss after Fire Blast. 248 speed EVs allows it to outspeed 252+ speed Base 75s like Dracozolt.

It’s best combination of its last two slots are Bulldoze + Substitute and Swords Dance + Substitute. Bulldoze + Sub allows it to beat Imprison Mew as well as Haban Hydreigon and others, and Sub+SD allows it to be a potent wall breaker.

Excadrill’s main traits are it’s ability Mold Breaker, which allows it to easily dispose of Mimikyu and Crustle, and it’s high HP and Attack, which allows it to act as a fast yet decently bulky attacker with a decent defensive typing. It’s typing, ability, and versatility against quite a few top threats should secure it a- because it is the better mold breaker user compared to haxorus. Basically Excadrill does everything Haxorus wants to do besides Specs Dragapult and Hydreigon. It actually KOs fairies and Crustle. It actually beats Haban Goodra and Hydreigon. It is the superior Pokemon.

Life Orb Excadrill beats Duraludon, Aegislash, Corsola, Ferrothorn, Sylveon, Crustle, and more, unlike a certain mold breaking dragon type.

Also drop haxorus like wtf it is not as good as corviknight or sylveon.

:sableye: Sableye A+ > A Sableye isn't that good in 1v1 as it's checked by Fairy Type Pokémon. Prankster is nice, but it's only excellent at burning physical pokemon with Will-O-Wisp, using Max Phantsm, then spamming Recover. A better physically defensive Pokémon would be Corsola.
Have you played ladder at all? Dynamax is like banned, and this have been the frontrunners for suspect proposals for the last week.

:whimsicott: A- -> A. Really good countermeasure to mew, and subseed is still good. The lack of Z Moves really helps it vs the metagame. Will write a more detailed post later

Encore, Disable, Taunt, Recover, Substitute, and more: the perfect pack to shut down many Pokemon. Sableye has a really good gimmick Prankster set

Theres actually uh, none
he said "lack"

Edit #2: to lack can imply either scarcity or nonexistence, this is simply arguing over semantics and not actually what Pokesart is saying

Bro you just Trick a Choice Scarf and Disable. If you live the hit you win because they struggle and you recover through it.
Or you just Protect-> Encore/Disable and win because they struggle and you recover through it.

It doesn't at all operate with Will-o or Attacking Moves.

It's an A+ Pokemon at minimum due to it having very few weaknesses like Offensive Fairies, Aroma Veil, and Darks

Gyarados C > C+ This should be way higher, although it's usually checked by Rotom Wash or T-Punch Hawlucha, you can still set up a Dragon Dance and Intimidate can lower the attack of Pokémon.
Tpunch Hawlucha? Gyarados' access to intimidate isn't very impactful when compared to the better set up pokemon in the tier. This along with its lackluster ability to use its water-typing and having a flying typing that essentially only hurts it makes it a C tier pokemon in this meta. No Z moves hurts it significantly.

I COULD BE BANNED!
In my defense, you can never always predict when a Pokémon is choiced or not.
The majority of Dracovish, Haxorus, Dragapult, etc. run Choice items. Haban Berry Dracovish, Swords Dance/Dragon Dance + Taunt Haxorus, and Life Orb Dragapult are worse than their Choiced counterparts, and it'll be really scary if people run these sets just to have a chance in mind games vs Sableye.

My own nomination:
:hippowdon: to C tier: I've talked a lot about this before, but I was disappointed when I noticed that the VR council didn't even vote on Hippowdon. It's not totally inferior to Rhyperior. Beating Dragapult, non-Choice Specs + Hydro Pump Hydreigon, Energy Ball Chandelure and Gengar, Rhyperior itself, Conkeldurr, and Gyarados is not something to be ignored.

Cantius

I COULD BE BANNED!
:scrafty: to C: This started out as some random meme I created but it's actually good, with moderate investment (about 150 EVs) it can beat Dragapult, Dracovish, Dracozolt, Haxorus, Galarian Darmanitan, Excadrill, and so much more. Intimidate and Counter are a godsend that allows it to beat many physical attackers, even those with super effective moves. Its only other notable coverage is Poison Jab for Whimsicott, but it can pull off Taunt/Bulk Up/Fake Out sets too.

Edit: Also the reason to use this over Scarf Sawk is it reliably beats Haxorus, Dracovish, Dracozolt, Dragapult etc. at the same time without having to choose between Band/Scarf

Edit #2: It also beats Sableye while Sawk can't.

Wishiwashi: UR ---> Ranked

Wishiwashi has always been over looked. At first glace its 175 is laughable, "The worst BST" But it also holds the highest bst in 1v1! (620 bst)
How can Wishiwashi have the lowest & highest BST at the same time you ask? Well this is because Wishiwashi has the ability Schooling.
  • Schooling: If user is Wishiwashi, changes to School Form if it has > 1/4 max HP, else Solo Form.
Now this ability allows Wishiwashi to use it's 620 BST form. 45hp/140atk/130def/140spa/135spd/30spe - 620bst
And stays in this form as long as it's above 25%. If it does fall under 25% hp, Wishiwashi will change forms, at the end of the turn!

There's no questioning Pokemon hits hard. 140 attack & special attack! It's defense & special defense are nothing to be laughed at either.
Looking at it's Health Points & Speed you may start to lose hope that this Pokemon can do much. The 45hp stat isn't as bad as it seems. Without any investment the base HP rests at 231 which isn't too far from where Charizard's rests at 297 for comparison, and that Pokemon was a force in gen 7. But for what it may lack in HP it's high defenses make up for. Making it more valuable to run HP than a defense stat.

When a Pokemon deals a ton of damage moves such as counter or mirror coat would be run to punish them. But Wishiwashi's speed can go as far down as 58 spe which avoids most of those users. It's low speed allows it to move after Aegislash forcing it it into its Blade form.

But if you choose to bypass winning the scarf Dracovish match-up https://pokepast.es/840b796cd501db25 removes the defense input and lets Wishiwashi hit at max power which allows it to beat Mew!

Wishiwashi is a Pokemon that beats a lot of the meta, as well as runs different sets. It is a Pokemon deserving of a ranking in 1v1

Going through the S tier I really don’t think Dragapult belongs.

Togedemaru C- —> C+/B- or higher.

Togedemaru is criminally underrated in the tier with a decent speed tier and the sturdy ability.
Togedemaru @ Liechi Berry
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Nuzzle
- Reversal
- Substitute
- Iron Head/Zing Zap

Togedemaru uses nuzzle and sturdy to assure it gets speed control on opposing mons (except in cases of substitute), if it lives a hit with sturdy, it allows it to hit a 200 base power reversal with +1 attack, decimating most mons.
The combination Nuzzle with Iron Head/Zing Zap allows for powerful paraflinch hax on almost the same level as serene grace (55% I think, if I'm not doing stupid math), that allows it to sometimes win matchups it didn't usually.
Top tier threats that it can beat include Galarian Darmanitan, Mew, Mimikyu, Crustle, Sylveon, Togekiss and pretty much everything in B rank, bar Rhyperior.

GULP GANG
Cramorant UR-> C / C-
No but for real though, this should get ranked. Here's why;
1576933947319.png

Gulp Missile: When using Surf or Dive, it will change into Gulping Form if it has over 50% max HP or Gorging Form if it has less than 50% max HP. If hit afterwards, form reverts and it shoots out its prey to attack, doing 1/4th of opponent's maximum HP in damage. If the Cramorant was in Gulping Form, the opponent's Defense is lowered 1 stage. If the Cramorant was in Gorging Form, the opponent is paralyzed.
Note: When Cramorant is hit by an attack that KO's it while in Gulping/Gorging Form and the opponent has less than 25% health the Missile will strike first and wins the tie.
Note 2: Cramorant always changes form when using Surf/Dive, even when the opponent uses Protect or King Shield

I started messing around with this Pokémon because I thought it was fun to use. I found out that the Gulp Missile ability activates before Cramorant takes damage from attacks. Secondly, I also found out that the Gulp Missile damages Pokemon through Substitute so they take an additional 25% damage. Cramorant's ability to paralyse the opponent Pokemon when it is below 50% allows it to outspeed scarfed Pokemon.

I eventually came up with this set:
Cramorant @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Gulp Missile
Happiness: 160
EVs: 252 HP / 128 Def / 84 SpD / 44 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Surf
- Endure
- Substitute
- Roost / Air Slash / Hurricane / Icy Wind

This specific set allows Cramorant to tank a Gorrilla Tactics boosted Icicle Crash from Darmanitan-Galar and to outspeed scarfed Darmanitan after paralysis. It allows to tank 2 Shadow Balls from Aegislash and the Sitrus berry makes it tank a Shadow Sneak. Surf is obviously its main move as it activates its ability. Endure allows it to activate Gulp missile another time. Substitute counters the Sitrus berry effect and forces the opponent to attack Cramorant. Its last move slot is dependent on what you want to beat. Roost gives more efficiency to Pokemon that don't do more than 50% damage with their strongest move and Hurricane/Air Slash allows it to hit Pokemon that resist Surf like Golisopod. (or Air Slash flinch/paralysis shennanigans if you're into that).

The Gimmick:
The strategy can go into two ways. The main thing you want to do is to get below 50% health on turn 1. This can be done by Substitute. Once you're eventually below 50% (in a Substitute) you use Surf, this will transform Cramorant into its Gorging Form. On turn 3 you use endure, this will paralyse the opponent and do 25% damage when they attack you. On turn 4 you outspeed the opponent and use Surf again. If the opponent is below 25% health after the second Surf, Gulp Missile will finish them off before they finish you. This strategy applies to strong Choice Scarf Pokemon.

The other strategy that will allow Cramorant is against Pokémon that have Strong STAB moves that don't do more than 50% damage and are slower like Aegislash. For this matchup you want to just spam surf and roost until you win the matchup.
Conclusion: If Cramorant manages to tank 1 hit and do more than 50% damage to the opponent with 2 Surfs and the opponent doesn't have recovery, it wins.

Over All I think Cramorant has a pretty good Niche that works quite well in this metagame. Though it hasn't been explored on the ladder that much I still think it deserves a spot on the VR ranking. I don't expect it to be B rank or higher but at least its worth looking at. I hope this post will make people aware of this weird yet underdog Dodo.

Pult's bulk allow it to run a bulky scarf set, which beats 90% of the checks you've mentioned. This set combined with sub + disable and its high speed are what make it S tier.

It is a top tier threat, I’m not debating that. Bulky scarf certainly is a great lure/check to its counters but it loses out on a lot of mons it beats otherwise, namely Whimsicott, Sawk, SpDef Corviknight, anything bulky enough to live 2 hits and spam recovery or kill back. Sub-Disable is something but I really don’t see it being used that often and regardless it loses to 85+ spd (correct me if I’m wrong) scarf mons with super effective coverage, namely Haxorous, Mew, Darm-Galar, and Hydregion.
I have made a handy dandy graph for everything currently on the VR S to C- and their matchup against Choice Scarf, Choice Specs, and Sub+Disable. I understand one of Dragapult's best traits is its versatility but these are probably the best/most consistent sets. If the set is not listed on the mon you can assume it wins or loses regardless. If a specific set is listed it can be assumed that only that set wins. Both of those assumptions are not absolute, use your own judgment. This list is not 100% accurate, it is mostly a reference as 1v1 is a metagame with very diverse sets.
Summing it up, a lot of matchups are set reliant from both sides. Imprison+Transform Mew will beat a vast majority of slower mons (fuck Rillaboom) and Darm-Galar is a nuke which similarly beats most things slower than it, it's just so strong. Dragapult is a threat however it being an S is questionable.

Edit #1: Revised many things on the chart. A lot of matchups are still set dependent. Cantius and Synonimous pointed most of them out
Edit #2: Mentioning CB as recommended by Osra. It can beat some things that specs can't as it hits on the physical side and gets Breaking Swipe and Dragon Darts. Has similar matchups to specs however has no coverage so loses some and has Breaking Swiper and Dragon Darts so wins some others.

Some of these are just wrong. You beat Sawk with scarf, all whimsi sets lose to infiltrator, Togekiss loses to scarf, Duraludon gets blasted by specs, etc. Sub + Disable also beats Mew with Sub, which is really big.

CB Sawk beats you with Payback/Throat Chop, will clarify. Whimsi wins if not Infiltrator, will clarify. Will fix Togekiss and Duraludon. Still don't believe Dragapult is a centralizing mon. During teambuilding there are two requirements, for me at least, that leads to a stable team.
1) Have a check for Darm-Galar
2) Have a check for Mew
This is really what Dragapult suffers from. The thing stopping it from being a contender for S is that it suffers in the current meta. Dark types are running rampant and it can't run scarf because it then loses to some attackers, walls and Disable mons. So now it has to run Sub+Disable, but now it loses to scarf attackers. So now it has to run scarf, wait a second. Herein lies the issue. If it could run all of its sets at once it would no doubt be an S tier mon but as is I think it questionable why Dragapult is in a tier which is meant to represent the very best in the metagame. It certainly has a place among the top, not above them.

I wholly agree with this. To elaborate, Dragapult has a one very prominent counter that it shares with Gen 7 Mega Lopunny and Naganadel: Bulk EVs.
Dragapult is one of the most common mons, so it's also a common bulk ev benchmark. Dragapult only has 100 Special Attack, which is very little for an offensive mon, and its physical movepool is pretty shallow. This makes it very easy to just bulk. Now it's not like Dragapult is by any means bad, but it is competing with the likes of Imprison Transform Mew that can beat whatever it wants, Darmanitan that hits obscenely hard with great coverage, and Sableye that cheeses everything with disable. Compared to the monsters, it seems unreasonable for Dragapult to be S.
On a side note, I'd definitely say the most important mons to have a check for are Mew, Sableye, and Mimikyu, simply because you have to actively be bringing a counter, as these three are very difficult to blanket check. It is also incredibly important to beat Darmanitan, Dracovish, and Dragapult, but these three just hit you rather than have ridiculously effective cheese.

I think, unfortunately, you just accidentally hurt your own argument with that chart.

Look at all of the things that it CAN beat. Being unpredictable at team preview is a major positive in 1v1 and is something I personally value very high while I do my rankings.

Unpredictability is something that held Charizard as the elite 1v1 pokemon for so long.

When you can bring something at team preview that has possible winning matchups versus everything, your opponent is automatically at a disadvantage. They have 1. A hard time picking with mon to bring and 2. Another tough decision if you picked Dragapult because they wont know what you're gunna do.

Those things make it so good. I do agree with you that it might end up S- over time (if we make an S- tier) because Mew and Darm feel so strong (Darm less so) but I still dont have any problem with it being S for the first run of our voting.

Side note - it beating mew no matter what makes it easy to build around. Another great trait to have.

Lastly, thank you for the detailed post. I really enjoy looking at charts and I appreciate the time that goes into them hah

I agree that while dragapult is versatile and has a lot of good tools, I don’t think he fits in with mew and darm-g. He just jumps out to me as the most “balanced,” as you don’t really need to prepare for it, at least not to the same extent as mew and darm. I also agree with that he has more set reliant matchups, which is something to consider.

That being said, pult is AT LEAST A+. Or maybe even S-, if that’s a thing. I just think he’s easier to deal with and doesn’t deal with the “silent meta” as well as mew and darm-g (or gyarados against gen7, just an example).

I COULD BE BANNED!
OK, pointing out problems with the Dragapult matchup chart:
(please note that the calcs in this post do not always represent the most optimized sets, just what I could quickly come up with)

Scarf Darmanitan-G can be EV'd to hard counter Dragapult:
252+ SpA Dragapult Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 116 SpD Darmanitan-Galar: 296-350 (84.3 - 99.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Dragapult should always win against Band.
There is a way for Corviknight to always beat Specs Dragapult, if it's running Sitrus Berry and Protect. Protect and Roost in alternation to stall out PP.
Sub + Disable vs Choice Sylveon would lose anyway (Hyper Voice bypasses Substitute) unless you're running the rare Protect.
I don't know why you wouldn't run Infiltrator, it's better than Dragapult's other marginally useful abilities.
Dragapult loses against Togekiss. Look at calcs:
252+ SpA Dragapult Thunder vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Togekiss: 194-230 (62.3 - 73.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Togekiss Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Dragapult: 314-372 (99 - 117.3%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
But the damage of Dazzling Gleam isn't too high, Dragapult can be EV'd to beat offensive Scarf:
252 SpA Dragapult Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Togekiss: 146-172 (46.9 - 55.3%) -- 66.4% chance to 2HKO
Togekiss can counter with its own bulky Scarf set:
252 SpA Dragapult Thunderbolt vs. 12 HP / 112 SpD Togekiss: 132-156 (42 - 49.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
It appears that a bulky set (Calm Mind + Acid Armor + Shadow Ball + Overheat?) would be able to beat Dragapult:
252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Shadow Ball vs. 160 HP / 252+ SpD Chandelure: 254-300 (84.3 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Such a set was mentioned in the VR ranking comments, but I have never seen such a Chandelure before (in Gen 8).
Golisopod actually has a fair chance against Dragapult, it has the potential to survive a Choice Specs-boosted Draco Meteor and go for a KO with First Impression into Sucker Punch:
252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Draco Meteor vs. 20 HP / 136 SpD Golisopod: 250-295 (84.4 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Golisopod First Impression vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dragapult: 99-117 (31.2 - 36.9%) -- 79.7% chance to 3HKO
252+ Atk Golisopod Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dragapult: 208-246 (65.6 - 77.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Specs Dragapult can defeat a non-specially bulky Rhyperior:
252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rhyperior: 429-505 (98.8 - 116.3%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
Arcanine can win by slowly whittling Dragapult down. Snarl can prevent SpD drop rolls from Shadow Ball from affecting the matchup. Choice Specs Dragapult with Water coverage should beat Arcanine. (and no Arcanine's not unviable)
Scarf Dragapult's chances aren't great going into a double Sucker Punch:
252+ SpA Dragapult Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Cinderace: 278-328 (92.3 - 108.9%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
A bulky set can beat Dragapult:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Draco Meteor vs. 192 HP / 4 SpD Indeedee-F: 279-328 (84.8 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Indeedee-F Psychic vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Dragapult in Psychic Terrain: 370-436 (116.7 - 137.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Specs Dragapult doesn't win with Electric coverage:
252 SpA Choice Specs Dragapult Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Milotic: 204-240 (61.6 - 72.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Prepare to be Mirror Coated!

Overall your table's errors favored Dragapult more than they went against it.
