Resource Simple Questions, Simple Answers Thread

Hello everyone, I'm a complete newbie when it comes to competitive Pokémon and have spent the last week or so playing around with some teams that I've found here on the forums getting used to competitive battling on Pokémon Showdown. Now I'd like to actually put a team together for myself as I feel it would help me understand the game and improve instead of relying on other people's work. I'm a bit clueless and don't really know where to start though - are there any recommended resources I should take a look at to get started?

Thanks if you can help at all and apologies if I've posted this in the wrong place.

I use Speed Tiers and Damage Calc for making my EV builds and when I was new used the Role Compendium to help choose Pokemon.

I feel Dugtrio will come next to suspect after Darm is most likely quickbanned. Arena Trap seems to grinding some players gears.

Is there anything compelling to keep arena trap after being banned last gen? With the new limited pool I only see it being more impactful

I'd actually argue that the pool of mons in OU is actually less vulnerable to trapping from Dugtrio than it has been in previous generations. No Heatran, no Chansey, defensive cores that are very oriented towards physical bulk make getting revenge kills harder on defensive threats (for example Toxapex is always physically defensive meaning Dugtrio struggles to even 2HKO it). There's also a lot of threatening breakers that Dugtrio can't trap (Hydreigon, Gengar, NP Rotoms, Specs Dragapult, Aegislash, etc.) as well as Ghost types in general. Last gen the pool of viable wallbreakers that weren't trapped by Dugtrio was smaller, and even then a lot were vulnerable to Pursuit (two trapper teams were a thing back then but are no longer possible, so therefore many more threats remain unchecked by trapping). Dugtrio feels, at least to me, less effective in general. It still traps some key targets and Arena Trap is still arguably uncompetitive, so it still remains to be seen

Is it known when the council will make a decision on Galarian Darm?
The plan is to keep the “On the Radar” thread open for a total of 1-2 weeks to finish collecting the community’s feedback. The thread was posted on Thursday I believe, so it won’t be before this Thursday at the earliest.

Is the current "On the Radar" thread reserved for only Darmanitan discussion? Or are we allowed to discuss other mons/abilities/etc?

Where can I look for good sets for Vaporeon and Umbreon in the current meta? Now that they've both lost access to Toxic, I wonder how differently they should be used when compared to past gens.

Analyses haven't been written for them yet, so your best bet is going to the Contributions & Corrections forum and looking for in-progress analyses that aren't posted yet. For what it's worth, I think they're both best if used with a physically defensive spread, both running Wish + Protect with Scald and Haze on Vaporeon and Foul Play and Yawn on Umbreon. Umbreon might do well with a specially defensive spread in order to check specs Dragapult.

Thanks for the reply! That was quick ;)
speaking Of toxtricity, which is better, shift gear Or specs?

Specs Toxtricity is definitely the most viable set right now. It's a powerful wallbreaker that has very few switch-ins, and the switch-ins it does have can be predicted. For example, the common Ground-types that are able to switch into Overdrive or Volt Switch will still take a ton of damage from Boomburst (Physically Defensive Seismitoad takes 97%ish OHKOed after Stealth Rock damage, Excadrill takes 67%), and Ghost types such as Aegislash and Galarian-Corsola will all get 2HKOed by Overdrive. That's not to mention you can always Volt Switch for momentum into another one of your wallbreakers.

However, that doesn't mean Shift Gear is a bad set. It's definitely good and can easily sweep teams in the late game once its checks are weakened or removed. It requires more team support, but can definitely do the job and does a surprising amount of damage as well.

If you're using Araquanid though, Specs Toxtricity is the way to go.

wow, thanks for answering!
I always didn’t have the courage to press boomburst on a excadrill switch in, thanks for the calcs!
I will give you and Robot7620 some credit for the RMT I’m gonna post sometime later, thanks!
