Sword & Shield **Official news only** DLC Crown Tundra 22nd October

maybe a side of "you would need wi-fi to use those services, and we wouldnt' want to make you pay"
Honestly I can actually see this being the reasoning for the existance of the phone app & having certain features on it.

Still not quite see the reason to make them *exclusive* to the phone one.

I'm still sticking with my believe that it's another of their weird attempts at protecting kids, forcing parental control & encouraging socialization (aka, go to the shops with the phone for event codes for example, rather than receive at home via wifi), something that's been a recurring trend lately.

Yeah cuz like...jsut make them optional? If you don't have nintendo online no big deal, just disable the features (maybe even remove them from the menu entirely!

I still say that's a bit off consider SWSH is right there with similar interactions while Switch itself has parental controls and, like, even if an event was in-person you can drag your switch around. If anything they'd probably want to encourage that as an option so you can actually do things like local wireless trading, battling and especially raids.

e: Whic hmeans this is just dumb enough I can see it being a possibility, now that I Think on it.
Dark game freak give us the idiotic Pokemon Home interviews

I know, it's why i say it's "weird attempts".
Like, it feels they took at heart the kid's security & genuinely want to get them to go outside, just... you know... don't quite understand that the reason they don't go out has nothing to do with not having a reason to.

(plus honestly lot of even 10-11yo nowadays utilize socials and are well capable of looking for Pokemon trades on the internet...)

For instance, right now if I'm playing Ultra Sun and I want to check, say, which Love Ball Pokémon I have; that collection is so large that I don't keep it in Ultra Sun myself.

I can't imagine that is a problem on the Switch. They artificially limit the boxes but could easily expand them so that isn't an issue.

The reasoning it was annoying was due to the 3ds not being able to open more than 1 App at time, hence always requiring to close SM, open bank, check, close bank, open SM.

Unfortunately it'd be exact same situation on Switch.

It's related to the fact some people dont keep their entire pokemon collection in a game due to having living dexes or organized ones on bank

"The Japanese Pokémon HOME FAQ has updated with some further clarifications about Pokémon HOME.
First, you don't need a Nintendo Account to run the mobile version of the app. You can connect it to your account at any time. Without a Nintendo Account connected, you won't be able to share data with the Nintendo Switch version, transfer from Pokémon Bank using the Nintendo Network ID method (Premium Subscriptions only), checking Nintendo Switch Battle Data or transferring the Pokémon HOME data to another phone.
Some further clarifications were given as to what happens when your subscription lapses. The game itself has a Free Box, this box allows for you to transfer from Let's Go, Sword & Shield or receive Mystery Gifts without the Premium Plan, and then it has more boxes for the Premium Plan users. If your plan lapses and you have space in the Free Box, you will not be able to move Pokémon from Premium Boxes until you have renewed your Premium Subscription. "

So basically a bit worse than what we expected: Pokemon in the premium boxes are "stuck there" rather than "retrieve only".

Heh, I suppose that'll be fine.

How do you take a step back from bank like that
The point they'll make will be that tecnically you have a free box to store anything you want to keep available, which Bank didn't.

Which is pretty bad as an argument, but it is one nontheless.

Apparently you can issue a transfer code from Pokemon Bank Home that will allow you to transfer boxes of Pokemon from Pokemon Bank. So the NNID tied to your Pokemon Bank account is irrelevant to the Nintendo Account tied to your Pokemon Home account if you choose to transfer Pokemon using this method. Helpful if you have siblings or friends who no longer play, since you can just issue a code from your own Home to take the Pokemon from their Bank.

I mean yeah its bad, its not a reason at all. Your free box explicitly doesnt overlap with the premium boxes you use the service for. Its just common courtesy that if the sub lapses you can pull down your pokemon so theyre not stuck in pokeprison.

Yeah its detailed somewhere on the website.
Iirc the code method empties all the boxes, but the account method lets you pick and choose

pokemon of the year thing is now live and we finally
finally

Have full high quality artwork of the new pokemon. No longer do we need to deal with bad guide book scans!
Still need gmax artwork but at least thatll come with Home

Also bizarrely Meltan and Melmetal are..."etc"
As in its literally "galar, etc"
So there we go. Mystery solved, they are the gonzo of pokemon categories

Only vaguely related to SwSh, but this bit was very interesting:

The Pokémon Company's Pokémon of the Year promotion is live. If you search for Pokémon or Pokémon of the Year on Google, you will be able to put in a vote for your favourite Pokémon. This is separated into 8 categories, based upon region of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola and "Galar etc.", with Meltan and Melmetal being the etc. with Galar.
Every Pokemon's in National Dex order, so if you open up Alola it ends with Zeraora, and if you open up "Galar, etc." it starts with Meltan, Melmetal, and Grookey.

Does this mean TPC retroactively officially considers the Meltan line part of Gen 8, even though it continues to go out of its way to not assign them a region? They could've just as easily done an "Alola, etc.".

(Also neat that Unova shows up as "Unova / Unys / Unima / Einall / Teselia" listing all five of its Western names.)

Edit: Greninja'd

Double Edit: This might help someone, but if you try to download the artwork directly from the vote page you'll get an 80 x 80 thumbnail. To get the full artwork just delete the "w80-h80-" string from the URL.

Meltan and Melmetal sit in that weird spot where they're neither a gen 7 nor a gen 8 pokemon.

They got introduced in an actual remake of a gen 1 title, and aren't obtainable in gen 7 games nor transferable. But, their pokedex number comes before gen 8 ones.

Its interesting because they have other wise been grouped with gen 7 in other merch. And they don't even get a proper entry in Galar. And they debuted in what is definitely not a gen 8 game.
I wonder if Home will have cheevos for filling each generation, where will Meltan go

The "etc" part of "Galar, etc." strongly implies Meltan and Melmetal aren't considered Gen 8 Pokémon either.

So... we call them Gen 7.5 mons?

I'm actually thinking of the fact they might act as a "family" of their own of Pokemon introduced between generations.

Which I mean, with the way Switch works and how easy it is to distribute patches & mystery gifts compared to previous gens, isn't something to exclude.

For example, Arceus could have easily been a "etc." Pokemon considering he was introduced in a gen where he was never made available.

I dunno. The dlc stuff seem like the 5 new pokemon are still "gen8" and galar in particular.
Maybe the issue here is Go, specifically?

Huh? Arceus was given out in gen 4. They even advertised the Platinum lore dump event that no one knew about if you drug it around Sinnoh

Wasnt the Arceus event never activable legitimately as the item was never distributed? Or am I confusing it with something else?

The spear pillar event never happened but Arceus itself was released alongside rhe movie. If you had it in Platinum you could see a Hiker who gave lore. If you sent to HGSS you got the sinjoh ruins sidequest.
I am pretty sure Arceus came out before HGSS did, even. Or same year at least
