Sword & Shield **Official news only** DLC Crown Tundra 22nd October

2) Slowking: eeeh, does the ability also work on itself?
How, outside of wacky baton pass chains, do you intend to enter the field with lowered stats? The ability would virtually never do anything if it self-targeted in singles.

If it hazed the opponent, well then that would be a cool alternative to unaware.

By double-switching into Intimidate, or by getting affected by Sticky Web (depending on when the ability is triggered, of course)... but since it's Slowking who we are talking about, both are completely irrelevant in singles.

I’m a meh on the legendary raids.

On one hand, steamrolling dens with a bunch of competitively tailored Pokemon isn’t challenging and after a month of everyone getting the legendaries they want user participation would drop to late-starters and little kids who are going to bring a 0 IV level 5 Cleffa to fight a Mewtwo.

On the other hand, those rental movesets suck and if those special legendary den fights have proven anything, it doesn’t take much for a Pokémon to become a insurmountable sweeper after a few Max boosts. The only redeemable way that I can see this working is if we know the legendary before venturing into the raid (Like we do for regular dens) and that, the further you progress, the better the trade-up mons become (In typing, movesets, and/or stats).

In other topics, Slowking-G is cool and Eerie Spell + Regenerator seem like another good answer to stall in theory (or a boon to stall teams if played right) and Melmetal is still a pain in the ass to obtain but that’s always been the case for Pokemon that GF decides are special.
Worth noting that the idea is you start with the rental pokemon with iffy movesets then upgrade by catching the dynamax pokemon along the way. With, presumably, better movesets & stats as you go through the raid.

Still the issue of possibly not knowing what lies at the end but I can see the progression system in play here and likely adds some weight to the split paths beyond just "well, who seems LESS of a pain"

It all depends on whether the minibosses will be stock Pokémon caught at the specified level (as in current regular raids) or if they will have custom-tailored sets.

it gets body press and rest now which at least is a little more than nothing.

I wonder if the new Regis will have HA. I mean, to my knowledge we don’t know what their current abilities do yet so that might not even be necessary, but the original Regis have HA so it would make sense for them. Watch it be Clear Body lol

That's only from a datamine and not final, azumaril was set to get high horse power in pokemon home but didn't in the actual game either. Considering regigigas past with not getting rest and protect I wouldn't be surprised if before release they decide to remove those moves from regigigas' movepool.

The example shown on the website is they picked a Flareon at the start and their first battle was against this Clefairy

And right off the bat we can tell it has a hidden ability & has 3 TM moves

If not custom, I do think these Pokemon will at least be useful and get more useful as you go along

So I'm trying to think of what is actually in the DLC that isn't either returning cut content, or new content "buffed" by returning cut content. I'm not impressed with this DLC so far but I could be wrong but based off Isle of Armor I don't have high hopes.

100~ returning Pokemon... okay. "Free" Pokedex upgrade but it's only really achievable by paying for either Home or Nintendo online.

Dynamax adventures might be neat but seems like since the rental Pokemon have terrible moves and are random it's going to be a frustrating experience if you keep getting bad rental rolls. The fact that the major rewards are just returning legends is kind of lame since they aren't even allowed in VGC.

I really like the new Galarian forms and the new Regis but it's kind of annoying that they're using familiarity to generate excitement. Could they just make something brand new instead of pandering to nostalgia? Well... besides Calyrex.

Seems like there is some kind of Tundra story which could be neat, but it appears a lot of it is just old content re-skinned as something new, such as the event "It Came from the Ultra Beyond!".

Oh cool we get some Pikachu with hats. Great.

Speaking of hats, they are adding some additional clothing options. Imo this is where the paid DLC should be, with cosmetic upgrades for yourself or your Pokemon but with free content updates considering this fucking game earned around a billion dollars in main game sales alone not even counting DLC.

Connecting Home to Go is FINALLY happening but really there's very little reason to care as IVs are random and I don't think there's really any special moves that come from Go. So the only appeal is the piles of community day shinies.

Galarian Star Tournament could be fun. Hopefully the levels are set to 50 or else it's just going to be an easy stomp for an over-leveled team. But also it's going to be re-using Wyndon Stadium plus "trainers we already met" so it sounds like it's just repurposed previous assets. I'm really getting tired of the world's most profitable franchise wrapping last year's Christmas presents and selling it to us.

The competitive implications are pretty big. 6v6 Singles is going to be destroyed for a while as Smogon one by one bans like 15 things while VGC is going to have to choke down some fun Landorus spam as well as fair and balanced Pokemon like Rising Voltage Koko. There's also the hidden ability patch that lets Softboiled + Unaware Clefable a thing as well as unlocking the HA of the hybrid fossils.

But non-competitively... idk, there doesn't appear to be much new content other than "old stuff returning". 30 dollars for Armor + Tundra isn't a great deal, though I'll gladly admit I'm wrong if Tundra unexpectedly turns out to be good. I'm just getting sick of Gamefreak selling back cut content with new skins. Yeah returning Pokemon are neat and Galar forms are kinda cool but it's just nostalgia pandering. Gen 8 has been one big disappointment after another for me.

I think the main appeal of the transfer from Go is that it eases obtaining families not available in your version or in the game without transfers if you do not own other titles. This extends to both legendaries and regular pokemon.

Considering that it is going to be basically free (coins can be obtained relatively easily for free as well, or at least, I remind they were back when I bothered with Go), it's just another way to help new players into the series without telling them that they need to invest into a 3ds + games + pay the bank sub + pay nintendo online (or pray the GTS gods) to get stuff.

This also does extend to pokemon particularly obnoxious to get like starters and version exclusives.

Poison/psychic type

Its ability, きみょうなくすり, restores its allies lowered stats.

Its exclusive move ぶきみなじゅもん is a special psychic move that reduces the PP of its target's last used move by 3.

I, for one, welcome the new auto-recovering, Toxic-immune god of PP stall.

So it's possible we'll have to use rental mons to fight the legendaries AND we won't be able to know in advance which one AND we might have to deal with bad catch rates.

Is it just me or does that sound like a massive pain in the ass? Especially if they are indeed repeatable since basically the only way you could get a specific legendary in the Ultra Wormholes was by process of elimination.

Yeah, someone at Gamefreak deserves an office defenestration for this. Who uses rental Pokémon? Like, ever?

But more to the point... After an entire game plus DLC1, there is not a soul playing Crown Tundra that will be lacking in serviceable Pokémon. This is nothing short of a handicap imposed in the most un-immersive way possible—namely the exclusion of the player's own personalized team.

The Battle Frontier was sixteen years ago. You can let go, like you did everything else.

Eh, while it does have those points, remember it has this bad issue of having a trash typing.

Poison/Psychic is not exactly godtier defensively, and if G-Bro is to go by, Slowking might also have his stats more skewed on the offensive side compared to its kantonian cousin, further reducing anything it could want to stall.

Also, remember it actually needs to use a Psychic type attack to stall out your PP, and will only take 3 off your last used move, compared to... you know... certain pokemon who happen to have an ability that does that by just existing (Pressure)

I think he'll still be mostly a doubles pokemon used for its ability to clear Intimidate.

Kanto Bro & King were meant as phys/special mirrors to each other I think Slowking-G will be set up as the defensive version of Slowbro-G, and thus also be more overall bulky than Slowking-K

Slowbro-G is clearly made with offense in mind. I mean, its shellder is a gun, it had a gun move and its ability is about going first
Slowking-G, meanwhile, is definitely made with support in mind. The ability assist its teammates, its attack burns PP on the opponent. Also the shlellder looks more of a full helmet now, i guess?

Pressure 'mons, by definition, do not have Regenerator to boot.

Stall Regenerator cores are so successful because they can rotate nigh-infinitely, absorbing damage without expending PP. Time is always on their side. Factor in a move that can remove the opponent's PP while being anything but passive, and the core's advantage becomes that much greater. Just sprinkle in something to block Banded Urshifu to achieve liftoff.

It is as bad as it was in Gen 7, yes.

Ah yes, because we all know that you certainly can't catch Landorus, the Tapus, and the three muskedeer from Dynamax Adventures, no sirree. And we certainly are not expecting anothed GS Cup format where the other Legends are usable in 2022 based on past patterns, nope.

I'm mixed on the rental 'mons because on the one hand at least it isn't something that would be steamrollable with something like 3 HA Perrserkers and a Zacian but on the other hand the Rental Mons movesets are exceptionally bad. This is probably to encourage players to swap out with 'mons they encounter along the Dynamax Adventures run since those seem a lot better (they show an example of an HA Clefairy with 3 TM moves) but they probably could have given us a bit better stuff to work with.

I really like the new Galarian forms and the new Regis but it's kind of annoying that they're using familiarity to generate excitement. Could they just make something brand new instead of pandering to nostalgia? Well... besides Calyrex.

Which is why regional formes were a mistake in the first place.

Seems like there is some kind of Tundra story which could be neat, but it appears a lot of it is just old content re-skinned as something new, such as the event "It Came from the Ultra Beyond!".

Ah yes, because we all know the story already and that it will 100% be an exact replica of the SuMo post game story with Looker and Anabel and will in no way shape or form have any differences.

Speaking of hats, they are adding some additional clothing options. Imo this is where the paid DLC should be, with cosmetic upgrades for yourself or your Pokemon but with free content updates considering this fucking game earned around a billion dollars in main game sales alone not even counting DLC.

Cosmetics tend to be the go to on paid DLC because they tend to be quickly made, the art team is more likely to have the time to do so, and allegedly triple A games are a lot more expensive to produce. I say allegedly because no one really knows how much they cost these days as no one really publicly puts price tags on the cost to make them. Which likely means that part of the reason why cosmetics are usually paid DLC is because that ensures they can pay the artists for making them.

Besides, it's really just added value for the DLCs at this point due to the additional content. If you are getting these DLCs for the cosmetics alone then you should probably reevaluate your spending habits.

Galarian Star Tournament could be fun. Hopefully the levels are set to 50 or else it's just going to be an easy stomp for an over-leveled team. I'm really getting tired of the world's most profitable franchise wrapping last year's Christmas presents and selling it to us.

They should also probably remove the Battle Tower at this point too since it's pretty much the same in every game. And the fact that they reused the Platinum Battle Frontier in HGSS is simply unforgivable.

That said: even if the levels are set to 50 it's probably gonna be an easy stomp, this is Pokemon after all, not some overly difficult game where that would actually make a difference. Which is the whole reasoning behind me having wanted to do Pacifist runs since the feature was mentioned on the site back when IoA came out.

Also let's definitely ignore the rather lore appropriate reason given in-game for all this. Who needs story after all?

But non-competitively... idk, there doesn't appear to be much new content other than "old stuff returning". 30 dollars for Armor + Tundra isn't a great deal, though I'll gladly admit I'm wrong if Tundra unexpectedly turns out to be good. Gen 8 has been one big disappointment after another for me.

They haven't indicated that anything in either DLC is "cut content with new skins" (that phrase feels buzzwordy) unless you've always hated the whole "third version thing" that they've done since Yellow Version at which point the DLC would have never seemed like a good idea to you since everything in it seems like the new stuff that would have been sold with an "Ultra Sword and Ultra Shield" version. At full retail price rather than half price.

Which is an indictment for just how they've dropped the ball this generation in terms of content. There definitely should have been more, especially when it comes to things to do after beating the game, but there wasn't and it just feels a lot more rushed as a result. In turn, them making the jump to DLC (which is a better idea than making you buy the game again for additional content imo) feels a bit off since it adding more content feels bad since it feels like stuff that should have been there instead of stuff you would get in a third version.

I’m hoping that the Tundra story will be fun. I think it’s stupid to include the UBs as part of it though since they won’t be giving us one or two new ones (they could easily have added version exclusives ala Blacephalon/Stakataka). The last story intrigues me the most. People have been saying it’s in reference to the Gen 5 Musketeers, but if
the datamine rumor is correct Sovereign/Steed might be in reference to the two yet to be revealed mons that are supposed to be involved with Calyrex. It would make sense as why would the finale not be focused on Calyrex? I hope so because it would make the new mons feel a bit less like recycled content.

Well considering
The datamined stuff (from reputable sources of previously datamined info incidentally) indicates that they are horses, it seems like a safe bet that the Sovereign and Steed story arc is Calyrex and a version exclusive horse.

I'm curious to see how Pokemon formes exclusive to GO (Case in point: Armoured Mewtwo) will be handled.

I am guessing it's going to work like Let's Go, where Costumed, Shadow, and Purified Pokemon cannot be sent to Home.

And while this one is more speculation, but due to Mew not being transferable to Let's Go, there is a chance Mythical Pokemon cannot be transferred.

Sheesh, so generous GF. They could at least have given us some of those rare balls that the Cram-O-Matic spits out if you’re lucky. Heck, 100 Ultra or even Great Balls would have been better seeing as this DLC is all about capturing Legendaries.

It’s like tipping a few cents on a large restaurant bill...It’s more insulting than nothing at all.

Thats like... not even worth adding in? 100 poke balls seems so paltry for shelling out the cash for the dlc

I dunno. Those 50 Big Nuggets for DLC1 turned out to be priceless in the face of the new Cram-o-matic (Bottle Caps).
Knowing GameFreak, the new Hidden Ability Patch can only be obtained from an NPC demanding thousands upon thousands of Poké Balls.

I am pretty sure they've done this exact same thing with the double packs for ORAS, one of the gen 7 sets (god, was it both?) and hell I think even the SWSH double pack

thus kurona's "why do they always do this".

I'll just throw it into my list of reasoning for "GF really thinks players are too stupid to actually play their game"

....nah, realistically, it's just to speed up any pokedex grind, even though most people who do pokedex grind will be spamming ultraballs anyway.
