I haven’t checked in for a while… how is everyone’s gaming going? Done anything cool recently? Any good experiences with gaming? It’s fun posting one-liners but I wanna talk and read a little.
As this is Smogon’s foremost a sanctuary for gamerposting, it is important to me that the wholesomeness and positivity this thread seems to have bred continues. It can feel pretty hard to come by online, especially over the past year or so, so it makes me feel kinda fuzzy whenever I bump this thread and see the continued positive contributions people make when it’s on the front page, and I hope it continues beyond when I hang up my hat and leave Smogon behind for good, whenever that may be.
AAANYWAY, last Sunday (on the 6th), I went to the first offline Soul Calibur event in over a year and it felt really good. It was great to be off of shitty netcode and back in a social setting again; it was great seeing friends I’d not seen in over a year, chatting and gaming, and then going out for hotpot afterwards. There were a few photos taken that I’ll share here, though one of them captures me in a very unflattering light (I have my mask down under my chin and with my beard it just looks horrible lol; there’s also a cable on the wall behind me that blends in enough that it looks like my hair is much messier than it actually is lol).
Now that covid restrictions are easing off, I hope we’re going to get more events like this. I really needed it, and I’m sure everyone else there was the same.
Otherwise, I’ve mostly been obsessing over Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition really. It has a monopoly on my headspace in general and even beyond that I’m having lots of fun optimising gem setups and the like. The game heavily rewards optimisation and punishes a lack of it just as hard, which is probably why a lot of people take a while to warm to it (it doesn’t feel good to lack resources to beat unique monsters above your level early- and mid-game if u don’t know the right way to make the game easier, and the game doesn’t really teach you that well—there are a lot of noob traps and poorly-explained mechanics to wrap your head around) and I’ve run around and beat all of the superbosses multiple times and experimented with different builds and party setups and strategies and it’s just extremely fun. I’m working on getting my save file 100%ed before starting NG+—I don’t think I’ve ever played any other game and felt compelled to 100% it other than some Mario games and a few other level-based games where it’s just kinda satisfying to solve every puzzle it presents you with, and even then I am yet to actually achieve 100% in any so this’ll be a first (barring games where you can’t not 100% them). I’ll probably post a more complete review in the Cong VG thread at some point, but in short please play it if you’ve not. It’s super fun and the characters, writing, scripting, voice acting, and game world are all amazing and I love almost everything about it.
