Five years ago... A man's fantasy became a reality. A place on the internet where pokemon trainers can watch and battle each other in the traditional art of competitive pokemon battling! That place... was Pokemon Stadium! (NetBattle then, now Shoddy Battle).

2003_11_kitchenstad.jpg

(Pokemon stadiums sure were primitive 5 years ago, it looks more like a kitchen stadium)

To complete his dream, the current "chairman" (Colin) instituted a ladder system that allows trainers to seemlessly battle each other with the click of a button. To make things more interesting, he also has also kept track of statistics on his website to indicate the top 100 players based on their winning records.

And now, it is time to meet the competitors! First off is our "Iron Trainer", a man who needs little introduction, who has at one point made it to the top 20 players of the ladder and is able to hold his own against heavy hitters like Obi and goofball, he is... The Legendary... Curt!

sakai01.jpg

(Quite intimidating, I must say.)

Our challenger is the little engine that could of the competitive battling world...A man who clearly has the odds set against him this battle, a potential rising star who has been under the tutelage of the almighty SePh, he is... myself! (Bass)

(Looks more like the little Engine that can't do shit =()

Comments: I honestly have high respect for my opponent, Curt. I have battled him maybe fifteen times and have only won once or twice without any luck hax. After SePh became my tutor, he has taught me several interesting things, but I have always desired to make it to the top 100 of the shoddy ladder. So, SePh gave me some inside tips to making it to the top and we came up with a team. And so, I was sent off to practice via the trusty find tab, but I did not expect to run into Curt so soon! Good luck, Curt!

And now, the moment of truth! The battle itself. Will battling superstar Curt come out on top? Or will I (Bass) pull an upset? Who takes it? Whose prediction reigns supreme!?

Combatants:
"Iron Trainer" Curt (Sanguine)
"Challenger" Bass (sandurz12345)

Important Spectators:
"Coach" SePh (ImaBeast)

Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause
Sanguine sent out Roserade (lvl 100 Roserade ?).
sandurz12345 sent out Gyarados (lvl 100 Gyarados ?).
Gyarados's intimidate cut Roserade's attack!
sandurz12345: Curt!
Valvalias has entered the room.
sandurz12345: So, let's see if SePh is a good tutor
ImaBeast has entered the room.
lolteamtesting has entered the room.
---
And so, the battle commences! I have been curious about the increased Roserade usage lately, but I was pretty sure he would start off with Sleep Powder. I do not have a trusty sleep absorber like Machamp on this team, and I didn't want to show my hand so early, so I stayed in and DD'd, hoping to gain an advantage in case Sleep Powder would miss.

Roserade used Sleep Powder.
Gyarados fell asleep!
Gyarados is fast asleep!
---
Just as I thought. At that point, I knew it was safe to bring in my Roserade counter, Heatran, with Sleep Clause in effect.

sandurz12345 switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Roserade used Leaf Storm.
It's not very effective...
Heatran lost 15% of its health.
Roserade's special attack was harshly lowered.
---
Wonderful. I know for sure now he will switch, but knowing Curt, he probably won't be using Blissey. I wasn't quite sure what he would use to counter Heatran. So instead of trying to predict, I Lava Plume, though thinking back now, I really should have used Earth Power since he would definitely send in something to resist fire.

Sanguine switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Heatran used Lava Plume.
Heatran's Flash Fire raised its fire power!
This was bad. I didn't expect another Heatran, but either way, that mistake could have been easily avoided. Regardless of whatever attack he had, I knew Vaporeon would be a reliable switch in, even with the flash fire boost. Indeed, Curt's prediction is reigning supreme right now.

---
Einlager has entered the room.
sandurz12345 switched in Vaporeon (lvl 100 Vaporeon ?).
Heatran used Overheat.
It's not very effective...
A critical hit!
Vaporeon lost 91% of its health.
Heatran's special attack was harshly lowered.
Vaporeon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.
---
That critical hit really sucked. At this point, even with the special attack drop, that critical hit left Vaporeon with only 15% HP, enough for Heatran to easily finish me off with another Overheat. Snorlax or Gyarados would probably be able to take the hit well, but knowing for sure he would attack, I felt I might as well protect to reduce his PP a little and gain some health back with Leftovers.

sandurz12345: ...
Vaporeon used Protect.
Vaporeon protected itself!
Heatran used Overheat.
Vaporeon protected itself!
Vaporeon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.
---
Good, just as planned. But I can't stall forever. Perhaps Vaporeon had a chance of surviving another Overheat now, but I didn't want to risk it, so I switched in Snorlax.

Sanguine switched in Milotic (lvl 100 Milotic ?).
sandurz12345 switched in Snorlax (lvl 100 Snorlax ?).
---
Go Snorlax go! I really owe SePh some gratitude for recommending me to use CB Lax, it has worked very well in the other battles I have tested, and now all the better since he decided to switch to Milotic, which makes things even easier for the tub of lard. I was expecting him to switch to something that resists Snorlax's attacks (Probably a rock or steel type) so I EQ'd.

sandurz12345: Sanguine exhausted his or her time!
sandurz12345: sandurz12345 wins!
sandurz12345: =(
Note: Curt was taking an awfully long time to make a move, so I was hoping he would use up his time (this battle was timed) and earn me a free win. But that wouldn't make a good story now would it?

Sanguine switched in Tyranitar (lvl 100 Tyranitar ?).
Tyranitar's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!
A sandstorm brewed!
Snorlax used Earthquake.
It's super effective!
Tyranitar lost 74% of its health.
The sandstorm rages.
Snorlax is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Snorlax lost 6% of its health.
Tyranitar's leftovers restored its health a little!
Tyranitar restored 6% of its health.
---
Finally, I manage to out-predict him once, and land a heavy hit on his otherwise menacing Tyranitar. I knew he wouldn't have any attack to OHKO me with, but knowing how my team is pretty weak to tar, I wanted to finish it off as soon as possible.

Sanguine switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
Snorlax used Earthquake.
It doesn't affect Gliscor...
The sandstorm rages.
Snorlax is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Snorlax lost 6% of its health.
---
That wasn't good. Being stuck on Earthquake, he had a free turn to set up, so I had no reason to stay in, but my Gliscor counters were crippled, so I felt it would be a good opportunity to bring in Vaporeon now and hope for the best.

sandurz12345 switched in Vaporeon (lvl 100 Vaporeon ?).
Gliscor used Agility.
Gliscor's speed was sharply raised.
The sandstorm rages.
Vaporeon is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Vaporeon lost 6% of its health.
Vaporeon's leftovers restored its health a little!
Vaporeon restored 6% of its health.
---
So, it is a baton passing Gliscor. I could have used Protect to gain more Leftovers recovery and gain a chance to survive Earthquake, but I didn't want to let him get a free baton pass, so with that in mind, I decided to Wish and hope to get a free turn of my own to heal.

Gliscor used Earthquake.
Vaporeon lost 22% of its health.
sandurz12345's Vaporeon fainted.
The sandstorm rages.
---
Score: 5-6

Damn, now I'll have a hard time taking down Gliscor later on, but Vaporeon's sacrifice wasn't in vain. His Gliscor was now at x2 speed, so I had only one option in my eyes.

sandurz12345 switched in Snorlax (lvl 100 Snorlax ?).
Gliscor used Baton Pass.
Sanguine switched in Milotic (lvl 100 Milotic ?).
Snorlax used Selfdestruct.
Milotic lost 100% of its health.
Sanguine's Milotic fainted.
sandurz12345's Snorlax fainted.
The sandstorm rages.
---
Score: 4-5

I was positive that he would baton pass, and I knew I was taking a big risk, but as SePh taught me, Exploding can solve many problems. With Milotic gone, Gengar will have a nice opportunity, so I send him in.

Sanguine switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
sandurz12345 switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
---
Gliscor eh? Well, since I know he can't hurt me, I want to prevent him from gaining an opportunity to set up some agility boosts, so I use hypnosis.

Sanguine switched in Tyranitar (lvl 100 Tyranitar ?).
Tyranitar's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!
Gengar used Hypnosis.
Tyranitar fell asleep!
The sandstorm rages.
Gengar is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Gengar lost 6% of its health.
Tyranitar's leftovers restored its health a little!
Tyranitar restored 6% of its health.
---
A good move on Curt's part, since sending in something with low HP to absorb sleep is a good idea. But still. he doesn't really have anything that can wall Genar, so I try to finish his Tyranitar off once and for all with Focus Blast.

Sanguine switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Gengar used Focus Blast.
It's super effective!
Heatran lost 100% of its health.
Sanguine's Heatran fainted.
Gengar lost 10% of its health.
The sandstorm rages.
Gengar is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Gengar lost 6% of its health.
---
Score: 4-4

Not 100% behind the reasoning of this move, perhaps he was hoping I would use Shadow Ball or miss my Focus Blast, and then attack first since he was probably scarfed. Oh well, that move really helped me since my main Heatran counter was dead.

Sanguine switched in Roserade (lvl 100 Roserade ?).
---
I didn't have any good reason to stay in against Roserade, since it could survive all of my attacks unless I exploded, and I wouldn't want to risk losing Gengar now when it can put some pressure on his team. At the same time, I didn't think he would try to out predict me and switch since he would risk losing another pokemon to Gengar.

sandurz12345 switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
Roserade used Hidden Power.
Heatran's Flash Fire raised its fire power!
The sandstorm rages.
Roserade is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Roserade lost 6% of its health.
Roserade's leftovers restored its health a little!
Roserade restored 6% of its health.
---
Perfect, an extra boost to my Special Attack makes it harder for him to switch in. So I might as well Lava Plume again and hope to finish his Roserade.

Roserade used Leaf Storm.
It's not very effective...
Heatran lost 16% of its health.
Roserade's special attack was harshly lowered.
Heatran used Lava Plume.
It's super effective!
Roserade lost 100% of its health.
Sanguine's Roserade fainted.
Heatran lost 10% of its health.
The sandstorm rages.
Sanguine switched in Garchomp (lvl 100 Garchomp ?)
---
Score: 4-3

Well, I hope he is choiced so I can get a free kill from either Gengar or Heatran, depending on his moveset. Since Heatran is out, and he would likely EQ, I thought I should switch to Gengar.

sandurz12345 switched in Gengar (lvl 100 Gengar ?).
Garchomp used Substitute.
Garchomp lost 25% of its health.
Garchomp made a substitute!
The sandstorm rages.
Gengar is buffetted by the sandstorm!
Gengar lost 6% of its health.
Garchomp's leftovers restored its health a little!
Garchomp restored 6% of its health.
---
Not good, he is using the Substitute + Swords Dance strategy, so I had no choice but to sacrifice Gengar to break his sub. Looking back at this now, I probably should have just kept Heatran in and let him die to break the sub since it would have opened me up for a Gengar sweep.

sandurz12345: ahh
sandurz12345: I hate this strategy
ImaBeast: curt is fat
Gengar used Shadow Ball.
The substitute took damage for Garchomp!
Garchomp's substitute faded!
Garchomp used Dragon Claw.

Sanguine: What "strategy"
Sanguine: Using substitutes?
sandurz12345: Sub + BP?
Sanguine: I don't use brightpowder.
Well, that's a relief, at least my attacks have a decent chance of hitting him. He pretty much knows he can't win without Garchomp, and I can't win without Gyarados. For that reason, he will probably switch to Gliscor since he wouldn't want to risk his Garchomp. So I decide to switch to Heatran to scare Gliscor.

Sanguine switched in Gliscor (lvl 100 Gliscor ?).
sandurz12345 switched in Heatran (lvl 100 Heatran ?).
The sandstorm rages.
---
As I expected, and since he needs Gliscor to wall my Garchomp, he won't risk losing him either. But I wanted to beat Garchomp in case he switched him in, so I used HP Ice.

Sanguine switched in Tyranitar (lvl 100 Tyranitar ?).
Tyranitar's Sand Stream whipped up a sandstorm!
Heatran used Hidden Power.
Tyranitar lost 19% of its health.
Heatran lost 10% of its health.
The sandstorm rages.
Tyranitar's leftovers restored its health a little!
Tyranitar restored 6% of its health.

Well, I guess he didn't want to risk losing either Chomp or Gliscor, though this helps me anyway, so instead of trying to finish off tar, I decide to switch to Gyarados and rack turns to wake him up.

God doesn't hate him, it just makes up for that bad critical hit on Vaporeon he got earlier, and besides, having been my fourth attempt to wake up, odds were in my favor. Being awake and with a boosted Ice Fang at my disposal, I was ready to sweep.

sandurz12345: Eh It was a good battle
sandurz12345: but
ImaBeast: you beat curt
ImaBeast: and it was a good comeback
ImaBeast: everybody will like it
sandurz12345: Well
sandurz12345: ok
sandurz12345: tutor lesson no. 99
sandurz12345: How do I write a warstory?

And now, let's recap the battle.

Props:
+SePh, for tutoring me, helping me with the team, cheering me on, convincing me to write a war story, and being a good friend and beast in general.
+Snorlax for being the only pokemon to have an opportunity to explode on this team, and such a good time too.
+Gengar, for shutting down Heatran and Tyranitar, my number one enemies on the team.
+Gyarados for keeping the pressure on Curt with Intimidate and finally waking up after four turns to sweep.

Slops:
-Curt for not fighting the battle out at the end nor even stay on to talk. A disappointment because I expected better sportstmanship from an "Iron Trainer", a battler of his calibre.
-Vaporeon to succumbing to an almost game breaking critical hit.
-Me for making some dumb moves early on in the game.

And so, on behalf of SePh, the chairman, and pokemon stadium, I bid you a good night.

Curt's good, but he does struggle to accept defeat graciously.

Great battle, always fun to see Snorlax blow himself up! Keep up the good work. :)

It would be easier to read without the enormous Thomas the Train Engine picture that stretches out the whole screen.

But great battle. :)

It would be easier to read without the enormous Thomas the Train Engine picture that stretches out the whole screen.

But great battle. :)
I guess I should get a smaller picture of him then I suppose, but thanks =).

Nice battle. It's fun to see that prediction of yours from a spectators perspective and not as an opponent :D

Props to Bass, Curt, and SePh

It's pretty lame that he just left the room like that without finishing the battle or even shooting you a GG. It's not like waking up on the fourth turn of sleep was a BIG surprise. The hax fairies sprinkled their magic dust on his team with that crit on Vaporeon. You just rode out the sleep and used G-dos' Intimidate to your advantage. He was just a sore loser.

Good battle though. Thanks for sharing.

Ha, nice Warstory. I don't mind Curt, though I must say, if you had criticaled one of his pokemon like he did to Vaporeon, he would've been probably crying hax. And yet when your Gyarados wakes up after 4 turns of sleep, out of a maximum of 5, god hates him XD. Oh well, a very good battle from both sides in my opinion. Curt is a good battler, and you played very well against him.

Heh, i actually find this quite entertaining. Good job Bass

when I read that I was like, that's mean, and he didn't even spell ass right. Then I realized it was your name lol.

Anyway, good match, the way your opponent left was really dissapointing, but you never know, he may have had to go somewhere. Perspective is everything.

EDIT: Macho Machamp click here. The apprentice round is out of tutors, though you can ask someone personally, I'm all for offers lol.

Naturally, anything posted by one of us cool guys has to be cool, right?

Actually one of the only war stories i've read intensively. You used good logic behind your moves, which made it more compelling than 'go to gyara go to chomp oh no brake stupid chomp'

Good job, Bass.

I don't usually comment on war stories, but the way you handled gyarados while it was asleep was brilliant, you forced him to swords dance which lead to you getting a free dragon dance, very well played.

I hate to see people douche out like that...the shoddy version of a disconnect, real classy.

I don't believe I gave permission to post something like this, and I thought warstories had to be made when you lost?

Anyway, this annoys me but I have nothing more to say.

Also it's funny out of the 5 times I've played MoP I've beaten him 4, but I "blow". :)

It was 3 in the morning, I was cranky, and I had just been through a tough string of luck.

Omg someone must be a douchebag for having an "off" battle. I'm sure none of you guys have ever done something like that, being the saints that you are.

That said, I'm more annoyed that he posted this without asking me because a) it reveals a team of mine, b) it is posted by someone that I beat many times and it feels as if they are just posting it to say "hey, I beat this person".

Post a story of you beating him. It's not that serious. If you are really worried people will view you unfairly because you had a bad day it's not a good idea to get upset about a warstory.

Look, people tend to post battles where they win more often than not. Usually though, the proper etiquette is to ask the other player whether or not posting is acceptable.

I liked the warstory, especially the Iron Chef analogy.

@Curt/whoever you are-- I'm not much of a battler myself, I'm pretty weak. However, I was once a very good wrestler, and I'd say that no matter what the discipline/game/sport/whatever, guys who are really good don't make excuses from my experience.

They tend to say, "nice one, you got me." If they're really good, their records speak for themselves. Just like the fact that your opponent even said-- "this was one win out of like 15 games," which we would have all kept in our heads except for the fact that you started spouting off like an asshole. If you really care so much about people's respect, I'm guessing you know what way would have been better to act.
