SPOILERS! Scarlet & Violet Leaks Thread - Data/Mechanics

Because Paldea isn't Spain, it's Paldea. It's Spain inspired, but it's not meant to be literally Spain but with Pokémon. They've never done that even when the regions were literally based on Japanese prefectures. Pokémon games aren't meant to be about the culture of the place they're based on, they never have been, even the Japan based ones only take elements from the places their based on.

Mean this in the nicest way in that just because you don't know about the nuances and references that the old games have w japan does not mean they don't exist.

also for the second time bro I'm not saying it needs to be all spain all the time but what's the fucking point of making regions based on countries you don't give a shit about beyond the extreme surface? just make a completely original region and put whatever you're feeling at the moment on it instead

What is this TCG style bullshit? This is literally how the TCG handles recharge/charge-up moves.
To be fair, I’ve been noticing an increase of TCG-style effects from newer moves since the previous Gen, at least. Some of the G-Max Moves (such as Befuddle and Stun Shock) have effects that resemble TCG moves where you flip a coin and a different special condition is inflicted depending on whether it lands on heads or tails.

This is broken. Literally a better giga impact with a far less severe drawback.

We'll have to wait to see what its stats are, but this move is stronger than Zacian's Behemoth Bash BP wise even with the intrepid Sword boost (BP of Behemoth Bash is 1.5 x 100 = 150).
remember that move base power isn't everything, steel is not a great type offensively and a high base power can only do so much into a resist
side note: if this mon becomes broken I can see skeledirge becoming a super common check to it which is pretty funny

Pure Speculation - None of this is confirmed - Don't spread rumors:
I'm actually really curious if Gigaton Hammer's treatment is unique to that lone move or if this might be a change to Hyper Beam style attacks in general. That style of attack's been regulated to boosting other attacks like max and Z-move for the last two generations. They're fine, I guess, but my inner elementary school child kind of wants the super cool omega attacks to be actually super good without other strings attached in competitive. A change like this might be a neat way to make some of the flashiest attacks in the game far more usable, though doing that in the game with triple stab might be uhhh a little risky to say the least.

My basis for this isn't very strong, honestly. 150-160 BST is pretty much if not exclusively where all the Hyper Beam style of attacks are sitting as is. Also, as mentioned, this is how the Pokemon TCG handles these sorts of attacks and would be a cool solution to the neglect these sorts of moves normally see.

If anyone can catch a use of Hyper Beam or a similar attack to see how it works, I'd be thrilled.

Mentally the pokemon tcg part of my brain turned on reading that attack too lol. It really is from an entirely different game. Now let's get garbotoxin as Garboder's ability!

That would be a huge benefit to Special starters and do nothing for Physical starters. But now that you said that I'm saliviating over Skeledirge Torch Song and better Blast Burn

In this case, the BP is high enough that whatever limitations of the Steel-Type don't really matter. Even resisted, the move is still 80 BP, aka the BP of Shadow Ball which Pokemon like Toxapex are struggling to take neutral hits from. And unlike something like Mega Mawile, which has similar jaw dropping power, this mon can run an attack boosting item to jack up its power even more.

I feel like if Hyper Beam/Giga Impact were treated like Gigaton Hammer then they might end up being too powerful, in my opinion. Garbotoxin in a videogame sense would be Corrosive Gas but an ability, which would be funny.

EDIT: I messed up. It would essentially be giving Garbodor Neutralising Gas.

man why is it everytime someone comes in with the "well not all of them need to be based on culture!!" thats great bro. would love to see where I said that. Not everything needs to be about the country but 1. it's a waste of a design opportunity when you just use japanese concepts over and over again and don't care to challenge you rself to read a book or learn the history of a country. 2. it's lazy

I get your frustration. At the same time it's best not to have high or even much expectation at all when big budget entertainment franchises lean into the whole branching into other cultures thing. Particularly not for a children's game. Their first motivation is $$$ and they're far too good at that to waste time reading Cervantes to properly design lore-appropriate anthropomorphic cats for 12 year olds. We all knew what time it was once we saw the Charcadet named Charlos, or even long before that when we saw what Quaxly looked like. (Tbpf the stage 3's Dex entry does say that it has a number of dances around the world and it's possible they just went with samba for the animation because it's recognizable. Bossa Nova is also extremely popular in Portugal in real life.)

They've shown that they have the ability to do it well (Kalos' Norse legends, Zamazenta/Zacian/Calyrex, Arceus, Groudon/Kyogre/Rayquaza) but far more often they've taken the easy way out with things like Trubbish in Unova (lold irl though) and a bunch of things throughout SM. I'd just enjoy it for what it is or simply skip the games altogether. It's never going to be as inspired as when they were working on myths intrinsic to the culture(s) they actually care about. The overlapping issue is them insisting on mons having professional identities which can lead to quite hilarious slip-ups like this when you're basing regions on places but it is what it is. It's always like this with entertainment's commodification of culture and identity.

Haven't seen this mentioned in the thread yet - a new item, the Ability Shield.

An item to be held by a Pokémon. This cute and rather unique-looking shield protects the holder from having its Ability changed by others.

You can find them in the Delibird-themed shop in Mesagoza, on the right, as you enter the gates.

Curious how this will work with Klutz. My guess is that it won't proc, until your ability changes away from Klutz, at which point it starts working.

So Koraidon gets an attack boost from sun that it sets itself (unspecified but presumably 50%), has comparable attack and speed stats to Hero Zacian, sets weather for effective triple STAB, and has a better STAB move than Hero Zacian with the downside of a common immunity. And it also apparently gets some sort of signature item we haven't seen yet. On the other hand, it gets trolled hard by Kyogre, and the move's bonus effect is basically irrelevant when you're already OHKOing anyway with 100BP super effective STAB coming off effective >200 base attack.

It'll definitely be very strong, but both STABs having an immunity and the third pseudoSTAB and the attack boost getting negated by one of the best Pokemon in Ubers (assuming it's eventually introduced) might be enough to keep it in check.

Regigigas and Slaking are gonna love this item.
