Metagame SV OU Metagame Discussion

Anyway, I'm somewhat neutral towards the Tera decision, I think it adds another layer to the "mindgames" involved in Pokemon, which isn't a bad thing per say. And if it really turns out to be horrible, Finchinator already announced that it can/will be retested again later on. RIGHT NOW, the tier has much more pressing issues, chi-yu only being the most obvious one. Personally, I would also like to see Ape gone, but that is mostly due to me leaning more towards fat teams struggling with it, from what I've gathered, more offensive teams don't struggle as much with him.

Something I'd like to put up for discussion is that I think people overvalue how "broken" Cyclizar/Shed Tail is. It's no doubt that it's an insane move, especially paired with Regenerator, but the thing is that the archetype that it's used in the most (HO) tends to get worse the further into a metagame we are. There is a lot of things that naturally provide counterplay, like Infiltrator Pult, without having to resort on completely niche-otherwise-useless-mons/items/moves

On a more serious note:
Quickban:
Cyclizar
Test:
Chi-Yu
Genuinely don't think there's any other "broken" Mons in the tier in its current state. Find Annihilape managable; Espathra is annoying but managable; Chien Pao strong but weak to rocks, priority users and helmet so its managable.
Once Chi Yu gets banned (hopefully) , things could change a lot, could see other Mons actually reach a broken state

DD Dragonite most of the time is easily countered by Tusks one of the most popular mons in the meta and its biggest issue is Shed Tail (which should be banned), just run ice spinner.
Dragonite has a lot more options to handle Tusk than Tusk has to handle it. Many people have been running DD Hurricane, which I think is terrible but nonetheless, but also you need to be BU or Ice Spinner + CC to effectively beat roost DD Nite. Also, teams rely on Tusk to do many things, like setup rocks, spin and be a check all to a bunch of stuff. Relying purely on Tusk to handle even a Dnite that your Tusk set counters is a pretty sketchy move long term imo.

Ice Spinner + CC is very common though. At least its what i usually run. But i can see people using tusks as rocker might struggle, still there are other answers, tusks is just imo the most prevalent one. Bulk Up Ape also deals nicely with nite, and the unawares almost all stomp DD variants.

For me the follow up to the suspect results should be:

QuickBan:
ChiYu

Supect vote:
Cyclizar/Shed Tail, Ape, ChienPao, Dragapult, Garganacl, Spathra, Roaring Moon. Skeledirge.

I think dragonite biggest issue is Shed Tail support
don't see how skeledirge is suspect-worthy. it's definitely got counterplay with or without tera and torch song makes it threatening but not anything overwhelming. i can see the others getting suspected but i really don't see dirge getting one

Sources indicate Espathra is on the tiering radar.
while the bird is pretty scary, I highly doubt it'l get suspected, let alone quickbanned, the meta has adapted to its presence with a good level of ease and it basically mandates support and often tera just to funcion.

Agree, with the same support and set up turns it needs Dragonite or Moon are way more consistent sweepers.

I keep using Skeledirge and I don't see how it's OP. It's a good Unaware user.

Yeah Espathra seems like one of those mons that appears on the slate but then gets 0 votes to be banned (probably Dnite too, honestly). It didn't even make it to OU by usage, and while I understand that that has no bearing on whether it needs to be banned, there's a reason that even HO teams aren't always including Espathra. It requires a ton of support and relies heavily on Tera to get past its checks, but HO teams have plenty of other good Tera options like Dnite, Ape, Roaring Moon, etc. Feels like a Pokemon that you can prepare for in the builder without even really trying. Additionally, if Cyclizar were to be removed from the tier as it very well may be, Espathra's own threat level will take yet another drastic hit.

Of all the stuff that commonly appears on HO, Espathra probably scares me the least in-game.

personally I find annihilape to be overrated.
it is not by any means bad, but it is has too many flaws holding it back from being broken.
this pokemon almost never buffs its speed therefore it is easy to outrun, the special attackers don't have much trouble dealing with it since it buffs its physical defence.
its typying may be one of the best if not THE best offensively but defensively it barely resists anything.
