NOC Smogon Mafia Mafia (Won by the Mafia)

I actually think people applying the ORG/Survivor mentality to NOC mafia is one of my least favorite things about it. The two open secrets about mafia is that the surest way to lose is to die so it's really in some ways a popularity contest, and that as an extension of that, the people who live (at a high enough level) are the people who have better communication skills, not necessarily the ones with better reads or scumgames. But accepting these things makes the game very boring imo.

The surest way for a mafia game to become uninteresting to me is to have it be about people posturing about how good they are while other people just sheep like "yeah I guess if you're scum I can lose to you", a phenomenon I've seen in at least half the games I've read in the last year involving many different players on both sides of this.
I think these are mostly fair though I also think you’ve misinterpreted the “if you’re scum I can lose to you” a bit. That’s only ever said in a “voting you out rn would amount to tinfoil, you’ve played well enough this game that I’m going with ockham’s razor” it’s not like “omg Tommy’s so hot and good at mafia beat me bestie”.

The popularity contest has def been prolific in D1s of recent and earlier in revival sometimes later into the game, I think we’re muscling out of that in the mid-late game as more people become full community members (which also facilitates welcoming newbies better). Often the popularity contest wagons have high scum presence anyway so they’re useful in their own right

Also for the record Celever I am also not scumreading you already or applying extra scrutiny to you. You should know by now that I apply a lot of scrutiny to everyone in these things. I do think that I'm one of the few players who is less afraid to follow my gut on a more experienced or vocal player, so that is a bit of a responsibility I feel, but this applies just as much to someone like Sam or Psy as it does to you.

I'd usually say reading too much into flavor is kinda bad, but this feels pretty on the nose, also the second part seems to imply it's got decent good odds of being something like a classic WereWolf for the third faction
Ok I didn’t read that ty for signposting it, I think your assessment is mostly correct. If anything I’d say the flavour hints at supernatural flavour on town more than anything though, or “more powerful” could be used as a substitute for “more talented” in which case most roles are people with a specific talent.

Agree it signposts to werewolf as the indie

Pre-revival, it used to be that nearly everyone had a role, sometimes even in NOC.
I mentioned this earlier in the thread when a fairy mentioned as such, nowadays I would expect Tommy / Clouds to tell IPL to include role madness in the OP if it were the case, but that’s not necessarily the case

I think all of this is fair, yeah. I’d also say that (this is the ORG skillset again) we are lacking the highest percentile untouchables, I could see a vote getting pushed on anyone in the cast. Sam is quite untouchable but most of these players don’t really know him so probably not rn

I think it's somewhere in between these things. A lot of times a new player can tell something is wrong, but are unconfident and unable to argue against someone who is confident and good at conversation. Other times people do just want to coast and be saved by people they see as better than them.

That's something I hope that, if you're new and reading this, you can recognize in yourself and fight against. You are valid, your reads are valid, and any active and honest contribution you make is just as good as anything anyone else says in here, now matter how good they seem.

I like the shade that I'm washed up enough to not be considered one of the good ones anymore. That's vaild but I'm gonna do my best to fix that.

Unintentional shade :row: Your rep is there but also not having played a couple games probably doesn’t help, you did well in the last game you played though

i read an old the smog article abt it, (btw. generally at school most of the games were decided by friends cheating and teaming/or people just being jerks so i thought it makes sense to get them off

People here maybe like/dislike each other at most or make some bad/good plays, but I’ve never seen outright cheating to my memory. I’d say you need some new friends if that’s your mafia experience…
