How has your life been? I get the feeling from your post in that love thread that it's going well ;)
re: "work hard and try for wealth":

while examples like your family history are very poetic, there are a lot of things i don't like about this argument. for one thing, these examples are quite rare -- consider the 500 richest people in the world, and tell me how many you think earned their spot on that list through hard work. secondly, being rich in itself is an incentive to not work at all (lol, how many of the top 500 are working hard now). the current american trend is for the poorest classes to work the hardest and the majority of those are not rising in social rank. thirdly, it's been proven that huge amounts of money is not a successful motivator, nor does it guarantee happiness.
with regards to fairness, i really don't think it's fair to tax somebody who's barely eating the same amount as somebody who will barely notice they're being taxed. that's why i've always supported absolutely no tax on the poorest class. one thing that i think we will agree on is that those who make money merely by having money should be taxed highest of all, as they really aren't doing any work to speak of.

it's not evil to want money, no. there's nothing wrong with being wealthy; but, there is something very wrong with hoarding your money and watching (or worse, ignoring) the starving people around you.
personally, i would like to see every job pay exactly equally. wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where everyone worked not to try for fame or riches, but because they actually liked their job? now, that's not currently feasible, due to high-demand or undesirable jobs (doctors, janitors) or jobs that currently require expensive education (doctors again (though unlimited education should be provided by the government, solving this problem)). but that doesn't mean we can't work toward it.

this is the part where i insert lyrics from a john lennon song. in fact, maybe just re-read this but with imagine playing in the background.
i didn't want to derail the abortion thread, but i'm still stunned that you feel that natural luck should take priority over enforced equality. i've always seen that as a "god made me better than you" stance, which is why i'm having trouble understanding how a non-fanatic can justify it. surely if you were less fortunate yourself, you would have social protection exist? and i assume you're familiar with the established theory that a more equal society is a healthier one?

outside of human rights, i actually think health care is a necessity for a functional economy. the problem is, if health insurance is privately funded, only people who expect to profit from it will buy it, meaning the people who are generally sickly. this forces insurance companies to raise their prices, and then more people choose to forgo insurance. this causes a cycle that results in what the usa looks like now: a huge portion (30%?) of the population is completely uninsured, and that's bad for everyone.
hey chou I am JUST about to leave for a week's holiday so see you when I get back!
