As for your issue with hitting the delay...yes, it is really annoying to do. From the looks of it, based on your talks with PoJ, you're using an AR? If so, I'd advise not using it until you get a feel for hitting the right delay. Then, you'd alter the steps in this way.
1. Start the timer at the same time you set the DS clock.
2. Boot the game up from the DS menu.
3. Just as the first timer ends, reset the game.
4. Hit continue as the second timer ends.
It's a bit easier on HG/SS to hit delays, so if its D/P/Pt, don't be surprised you hit a delay that's 1 point away...at least in my experience.
