Yeah, I haven't met anyone from around here either. Except a couple from Columbus, that is. Do you go to any VGC stuff?
I know about where that is. Didn't really know anyone else that lived around here though.

I play tenor too, and my biggest advice for improvising besides listening a lot to jazz players you like (hank mobley, coltrane, sonny stitt, etc.) is memorizing the chord changes (for a blues that's pretty easy) and scales (which you've done already - hopefully in thirds and fourths as well) so you can make a musical statement without thinking too hard about technique or where you are in the song form.

I don't really know where you're at with improvising, so that's where i'll leave it for now.

in the meantime, check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mbpAAFceIw

its an online lesson by jerry bergonzi (tenor sax) and I think you'll learn a lot from it.

there is a five-note shapes version as well which you can check out too!

so yeah man hit me up on chatzilla sometime, its exciting to hear someone really interested in jazz!
i love the michigan campus, and i've heard great things about their engineering and medical programs. can't confirm or deny any of this since i've never attended, but i believe they're like top 5 in terms of medical programs for public universities.
