Mangas are the Japanese comic series, the animes are animated versions of the mangas. They're like the same stories and stuff, just one is a comic and the other a TV series. So, for example, I read a few mangas, including One Piece and Bleach, but don't watch any of the animes ;)
The mangas are really good though, you should try one of them! One Piece is the best imo (it's where chopper is from).
