Anyway, the best advice I can give you (as far as in-battle stuff goes, and besides just knowing the rules) is use arenas creatively. Most refs will reward creative playing, as long as you make the intended effects clear. In one of my earlier matches (reffed by Its_A_Random), there was a boiler that would generate accuracy-lowering steam if you used enough water attacks on it. In an attempt to dodge a Toxic, I had my then-Bagon Hydro Pump the boiler to try and lower my opponent's accuracy. It completely backfired; Toxic still hit, and my Bagon's Brick Break missed later in the round, but you can see what I'm getting at.
Oh, and always keep a close eye on your Pokemon's energy. I lost a Battle Subway challenge on Battle 1 because I ran out of energy from not paying enough attention.
